A cleft lip and cleft palate are facial and oral malformations that occur in pregnancy. The opening for a cleft lip or palate can be small or large enough to connect the upper lip and nose. The lip forms between the fourth and seventh weeks of pregnancy. A baby’s roof or palate forms between the sixth and ninth weeks of pregnancy. In some cases they may develop faster or slower during these time periods depending on the baby growth. A cleft lip is an opening in the lip.A cleft palate is an opening inside the baby’s mouth on the roof where the palate is. Baby's’ lips and palates develop separately during the first three months of pregnancy. Clefting occurs when there is not enough tissue in the mouth or lip area which results in a cleft lip

You are driving down the road and suddenly you are hit by another car. You get out to inspect your vehicle and notice a dent. While you might be thinking that it's time to head off to an auto body shop to repair the dent, you might not have to. Minor dents can often be fixed at home with one of these three tools:
Hanging palate is one of the rare complications of cleft palate surgery, where the sutured palatal mucoperiosteal flaps dehisced from the sutured anterior alveolar margin. Though secondary suturing is one of the options to treat this complication, secondary surgery which increases the morbidity should be prevented. Conventionally obturator placement following surgery has been described. Here we are sharing our idea of using fibrin sealant for preventing the complication of hanging
Cleft palate is a congenital birth defect. Treatment of cleft palate requires the interdisciplinary efforts of a Cleft Palate/Craniofacial team, which includes speech-language pathologists and dentists. Approximately fifty percent of individuals who suffer from cleft palate have been shown to have disorders in speech and/or language, with the potential to benefit from treatment (LeDuc, 2008).
Cleft lip and/or palate are facial and oral malformations that develop during the 1st trimester in pregnancy. There are three possible conditions that can occur alone or even as part of a genetic condition or syndrome. These include cleft lip, cleft palate, and cleft lip with palate. The diagnosis of this condition is sometimes extremely different for parents to hear and the implications of how the parents react can sometimes negatively affect how the baby develops. The research behind this article places the importance on the father's role of development and how they cope with diagnosis since mother's are normally the focus. The purpose of this article is to study the impact of the timing of diagnosis (prenatal vs. postnatal) of cleft lip and/or palate and how this corresponds with how fathers emotionally attach themselves to their infants. Parents who receive this diagnosis might influence their child's psychological functioning and this study discusses major similar themes that emerge with each family. Identifying which timing of diagnosis is better for parents will allow for a brighter future for a baby born with cleft.
It makes me glad to know that people enjoy the food they're eating. However, I would rather not hear them eat that food or see it. My most intense pet peeve is speaking or opening one's mouth while it is filled with food. From a young age, I've been taught that chewing food with a closed mouth is proper etiquette. Apparently, not all people were raised to mind their manners when they eat. Open-mouth chewing is a form of bad manners, annoys those nearby who are trying to eat in peace, and is simply repulsive.
Ask what can’t you stand anymore? It is important to use therapeutic communication to allow the mother to speak and understand where she is coming from and what her concerns
Everyone in the world is inherently unique. However, some people may have some extraordinary characteristics that define who they are. I was born with a cleft lip and cleft soft palate, meaning that during my development not enough tissue formed in my mouth and lip, which left a gap, or hole, in my soft palate and lip; this “birth defect” is treatable with numerous surgical procedures. While I am whole-heartedly grateful for the opportunity to fix my cleft lip and cleft soft palate, I faced physical, social, and religious trials along the way that together helped mold the person I am today.
A cleft palate (CP) occurs during the embryonic stage of life and is a craniofacial malformation (Masih et al., 2014). This oral malformation varies within babies as well as in severity. CP can range from an opening at the back of the soft palate (the soft portion on the roof of the mouth), to a nearly complete separation of the roof of the mouth (Masih et al., 2014). During the time of development CP and cleft lip (CL) are results of the maxillary prominence not joining together with the frontonasal properly (Mahboubi, Truong, & Pham, 2015).
One misconception that you may have about baby teeth is that they do not need to be cared for like adult teeth do. They’ll eventually come out, which can cause you to have the mindset that properal oral health is not necessary. However, baby teeth are just as prone to getting cavities, which can lead to pain that needs to be addressed by a dentist. That is why you may want to consider sealants for your child’s baby teeth. Here are some key things you need to know about them.
Cleft lip is formed when a baby’s nose and mouth do not form properly in the womb. These children are born with deformations to the mouth and nose. There are four main types of cleft lip that involve incomplete single and double clefts and also complete single and double clefts that cause deformations completely into the child’s nose. This can cause complications for the child to eat and breathe properly, but a series of surgeries can fix this complication. The cleft lip is basically a split in the lip of a baby that occurs on one side or both sides of the nostrils and if completely formed as a cleft the splits will go all the way into a child’s nose or nasal passage and cause damages to the roof of the mouth (cleft palate).
When you say the word craniofacial, instantly what comes to your mind is the head or face. Yes, this is true. Craniofacial relates to the parts of your skull and face. When there is any abnormal growth and development in your face or head, it is then called craniofacial syndrome.
“The first trimester is one of the most important stages of pregnancy”, according to Understanding the Stages of Pregnancy. Along with the mother’s body changes, the baby is also developing in the womb. Although each stage of pregnancy is important, the first trimester is looked at closely. The first trimester is considered to be from zero to twelve weeks. During this period the mouth is under-going the developing stage. This will aide in determining if the baby will have difficulties within the mouth region. “The soft and the hard palate are formed together by the primary and secondary palates. These palates form a Y-shaped pattern at the roof of the mouth which continues to fuse.” (Bird and Robinson, 2015. P.87). One disturbance that may
The working title of my integrating seminal is "Oral Fixation". My seminar will be a photography project for which I will be taking close-up photographs of people's mouths so that the teeth, mouth or tongue are recognisable but do not look like they belong to an individual. The person being photographed should be not be identifiable, because their identity is irrelevant. This could be dehumanising, since the people photographed are reduced to only their body parts. The reason that their identity is irrelevant is because this photography project is ultimately about me and my fascination for the mouth. I intend for this to be both an ironic celebration my own feelings of disgust for my physical body and a catharsis of my mild
The tissues that form the palate join together slightly later than the lips, between the sixth and ninth week of pregnancy. A cleft palate occurs when the tissues that form the palate do not fully join together during pregnancy, which either leaves an opening in part of the palate, or in some cases, the entire palate is left open (Facts about Cleft Lip and Cleft Palate). An incomplete cleft palate is the name for a cleft that is in the soft palate, while a complete cleft palate is the name for when “both the hard and soft palates are affected and the mouth and nose cavities are exposed to each other.” Lastly, the submucous cleft palate involves a cleft in the hard and/or soft palate, but the cleft is covered by the mucous membrane which lines the roof of the mouth (Cleft Lip and Palate). This submucous cleft palate “often goes unnoticed at birth and may not be diagnosed until later when symptoms develop (Cleft lip and
