Football Friend or Foe?
Imagine if your child was out on the football field on a sunny fall Saturday morning. It’s the season opener for his team and he is so excited to finally play. Then the first play of the game, Boom! He is hit hard by the other team and hasn’t got up. You panic and have to rush him to the hospital to find out that he has a serious concussion. He now will have problems thinking and learning for the rest of his life. While all this is rushing through your head you think, is football really worth it? One of the most argued topics in youth sports today is whether kids should be allowed to play football. Research today has shown us that permanent brain damage and other effects can happen from the vigorous contact when playing

Are the benefits outweighing the rewards or are we endangering the child? I don’t believe our children should have a choice to play football since they have not reached the age of consent., “It is our moral duty as a society to protect the most vulnerable of us” (Omalu 3). When asking my Mom about whether she would give her other child a choice of playing football she responded “No, football is the one sport that we never plan on offering as an opportunity. He is not physically built for the sport, or is it worth the risks that are involved. There are too many other good sports to choose from that offer some of the same benefits.” Originally my mom did not feel this way. The reason for her change of heart it because I was seriously injured the first and only year I played football. Before the season my mom was hesitant about letting me play the sport but I begged her into it. She knew that there was risk of injuries, but no one thought that I would suffer from such a serious one. During warm-ups before one of my games I went up against a guy twice my size in a tackling drill. When he landed on me, he dislocated my hip and chipped my hip plate. This injury was very rare for a young 6th grader like myself. I ended up in the hospital and had to stay off of my leg with walkers and crutches for months. It took me two full years to be completely released. This injury scared my mom and I because
High school sports are an important aspect of a young person’s life because it could decide their college, careers, and determine their social circle. High school football is a time where a fellowship occurs, not only with students, but the community also. There is on going issues with contact sports such as should there be rule changes or eliminate the game completely because of head injuries occurring too often. The problem is deciding whether the risks of playing these sports are worth it in the end. Are the risks of football worth the entertainment or should should football be banned for safety reasons? Doctor Anne McKey stated that if anything, we should have rule changes and equipment changes because it’s not worth the risk (CNN, 2012).
Youth sports are being questioned by the public as being too intense. One of the reasons for this is that sport specialization is up to a record high 25 percent(Sirs). This means that one in every four people are only playing one sport which can lead to injuries and psychological issues. Another issue is injuries in youth sports. Most specifically football is being researched intensely for head injuries that can hurt the children for the rest of their lives. Even though some believe that youth sport programs should be less intense they still believe that all sports are helping the youth grow up to be leaders for the next generation. Although many believe youth sports programs
MORGANTOWN, W.Va.--Playing four quarters has been a challenging task for the West Virginia offense this football season.
Is tackle football too dangerous for kids who aren’t even fully developed? Back then, when it came to sports, safety was never one of the main concerns. For example, baseball was played for over half a century without requiring helmets. Recently, society has started to worry about future generations and whether some activities will have long-lasting effects on them, such as football. Although many are advocates for safety, others are arguing that kids should be able to play what they want. While tackle football has been proven to be detrimental to the youth’s health, especially for children under the age of 13, critics have questioned and discussed whether other sports are going to be next and how they can possibly prevent football’s future modifications.
I think that kids shouldn't play football because it is too dangerous. People get concussions every day when they play football. After repeatedly bashing their skulls football players get concussions, caused by the spongy tissue in the brain hitting the hard skull. It is very painful to get a concussion, and leaves permanent damage to the brain. As well as being excruciatingly painful, and possibly never being the same, with many issues. "In milder cases, athletes can be left with lifelong pain, memory lapses, aggression, depression, personality changes, and many other issues."(Shotz[11]). This sport just keeps getting more and more dangerous, manifesting on itself, becoming more and more brutal as players become more competitive. There are
There’s no doubt that concussions in football has become a major problem, not just for the professional athletes, but for kids of all ages from age 8 to 19. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has shown that concussion have doubled in the last decade and The American Academy of Pediatrics says that, “emergency room visits for concussions in children ages 8 to 13 years old has doubled, and concussions have risen 200 percent among teens ages 14 to 19 in the last decade” (Keith Dunlap, The Oakland Press). This shows that the seriousness of concussions is not just an issue at a pro level but an issue throughout all levels of play. The risk is definitely present when you play football but it shouldn’t stop parents from letting their children participate in the sport. Playing organized sports such as football isn’t just a place to get injured, it’s a place where your children can learn the importance of teamwork, sportsmanship, toughness, competitiveness, they learn succeed, and also they learn about failure. The parents who don’t allow their children to play sports don’t let their kids learn about these important lessons of organized sports. Football is also a way for kids to take their anger and struggles out in the game and help them express themselves. It can also be a way for kids in bad situations to get a way out, to try and reach the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow.
In the world of football, big hits are something that are looked at in a positive light. They are seen as a way of asserting dominance over other players and it is celebrated by teammates. Big hits are a very crucial, almost necessary, part of the game that millions of people gather to watch every Sunday. However, in the past decade, the NFL and other organization have realized that concussions can lead to very serious problems later in life. One of these problems is known as Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE). It is a degenerative brain disease, much like Alzheimer’s, that mainly effects individuals in high contact sports such as boxing or football. Over time, this connection between concussions and CTE has become more common knowledge and more people have started asking the question “do the risks of children playing football outweigh the benefits?”. The answer to this question is yes, football is entirely too violent for children to be playing. According to “Big Hits, Broken Dreams”, one in ten football players gets a concussion, and 35% of players have more than one. The video also states that only 50% of high schools in the United States have a certified athletic trainer on the field (CNN, 2012). If concussions are really a concern for the schools, then why are there not more athletic trainers on staff at these schools to deal with sports injuries? This also forces the public to question these schools even more because if they are willing to cut costs and not hire a
What is Football? Football is a brutal sport that can have lifelong consequences. It’s dangerous and overrated. It has become a business that is only concerned about winning at the cost of maiming players, but people love it. Football players suffer more concussions than athletes in any other high school sport. Is this beloved game worth the risks, or should schools do away with it? We shouldn’t let teens ruin their lungs with cigarettes, so why would we allow them to damage their brains in the name of football? I have never played the sport, but I have friends that play and they’re always injured in some way. It’s just pointless. High school football players can undergo significant brain changes after just one season, even if they don’t get
One reason I would not let my son play football is because it promotes violence. “I hate to say it, but no “heads up” campaign or the threat of a penalty or a fine will reduce football’s inherent violence” (Fujita 3) Some people go into football not knowing the violence and pain that come with it. Professional football players were unaware of the dangers that concussions can cause, while the NFL knows about the consequences that can happen when a player get concussed. “In August , ESPN pulled its name and logo from the “League of Denial,” a “Frontline” documentary about how the N.F.L., handled -or, more appropriately mishandled - the concussion crisis among its players.” (Sandomir 1) Violence is praised through the stands when someone gets pushed to the floor and seriously hurt. Football players are unaware of the dangers that come with getting a concussion, but the NFL knows all and lets them get into this danger for the sake of entertainment. The NFL hides the truth and mishandled cases of players, because they know the consequences and don’t want to be charged for it, leaving the players clueless for what could happen next.
Many parents encourage their children to find a hobby. When a parent hears that their child wants to start playing football, they might get excited, knowing that their child found something they are interested in and maybe even meet some new friends. Coaches and the NFL will tell you it's a great career choice but according to the new concussion guidelines, the short term effects, like second impact syndrome, and the long-term effects, like CTE, tell you something different. If you look into it, you see that the evidence is stating that you should not let your children play football.
Parents across the United States are on the edge on whether or not they want their children to play football. The answer is very simple: the benefits far outweigh the danger. Media across the globe is over-exaggerating evidence about injuries, specifically the most controversial one by far, the concussion. For example, the new movie “Concussion” featuring Will Smith illustrates a doctor’s quest to expose the NFL for something they aren't hiding. Concussions at this point are common knowledge, and although they are dangerous, they are only dangerous if not treated properly. If a player is found to have a concussion, they will not be able to play for 2-8 weeks depending on the severity. As long as there isn’t another
Football is a rough sport. Many fans of the game watch it for the hard hits. These hard hits and the potential for injury is part of what makes the game so exciting. Some people say that football is too brutal and should be banned. Parents all over the United States don’t allow their children to play because of the risk of head injuries. Others allow their sons, and every now and then their daughters, to play and risk injury for a chance to earn a college scholarship and for a small percentage of players, the chance to play in the National Football League (NFL).
Would you be willing to play a sport that could potentially end your life at any moment? In any sport, it is noted that you are more prone to injury versus the average person since you are putting your body at risk. It is known that football is one of the most dangerous sports because it has a high-risk for concussions. On an average, about 47 percent of athletes who play high school football receive sports-related concussions. SInce 1997, 50 high school level and younger football players were pronounced dead after complications due to their concussions. Because of these intriguing statistics, the sport of football should be banned. Football should be banned as a whole because of health concerns regarding concussions, long-term effects from concussions, and mental disorders.
“An estimated 1.6 million to 3.8 million sports-related concussions occur each year in the United States, and many are related to football” (Fedor, Gunstad). The concussion problem has been sweeping through the nation in the lives of young football players. Players that may be too young to even be coming into harsh contact with each other. The thought of twelve-year old’s dealing pain and hurt to one another in a sport is insane. A poll was taken on if adults would allow their child to play tackle football, and with a huge margin of 92.6% believing that their child should be playing is hard to think about (Fedor, Gunstad). This essay is definitely going to prove a point to many that children playing tackle football should be banned across the nation through statistics, examples, and proven theories.
Vikram Chandamouli a seventh grader in Illinois says, “When your brain is bashed against your skull, it never fully recovers.” Amanda Vigdor said, “At many schools football is the hub of student life. Without football, there would be no school spirit.” 114.4 million people watched the super bowl last year and the college football national championship with 33.4 million viewers, which shows that a lot of people watch a normal regular season game. Last years NFL regular season reached 202.3 million viewers representing 80% of all televisions. NFL football has been around since 1920 whereas college football has been around for far much longer, so thinking about that. Now let’s look at injuries, Think about all the injuries since 1920 and earlier. A LOT! Out of athletes ages 5 to 14, 28% injuries are football, 25% injuries are baseball players, 22% injuries are soccer players, 15% injuries are basketball players, and 12% are softball players that were injured while playing sports. Despite the fact that football is a sport that you take risks of your life, that doesn’t mean you should ban football which also means you could be banning someone's life because that could be their passion and what they love to do and live for everyday.
