Noah’s Ark Animal Sanctuary, a wildlife preserve in Locust Grove, Ga., found and rescued three baby animals fifteen years ago, and the trio has been inseparable ever since. The animals, an African lion named Leo, a black bear named Baloo, and a Bengal tiger named Shere Kahn, were found in the basement of an Atlanta home after a drug raid. They were reportedly confined there in small crates and had sustained multiple injuries. All of the cubs were less than a year old and extremely malnourished. Baloo had been infected by parasites, and Leo had a wound on his nose that was badly infected. After rescuing the cubs, the sanctuary provided them with the medical attention they needed and kept a close eye on them as they healed. Baloo the
Zoos are an enclosure that traps the animal. There are people out there who care about the animals in captivity. Craig Brokenshaw, an Australian surfer dedicated to saving the dolphins in captivity said, “I felt quite sad, quite disgusted. It looked like they weren’t happy at all. They just looked kind of lifeless and disinterested,” Zoos are businesses that surround breeding and buying wild animals. Around 10,000 zoos worldwide hold at least 3,000 animals each. All of these animals are in captivity when they should really be in their natural habitat, whether it’s the grasslands or the jungle. That means that millions of animals are locked in and suffering greatly. Zoos are an insalubrious
To answer this complex question, philosophy professor Bryan Norton poses some additional concerns relevant to this issue. He notes that if in fact keeping these animals in captivity is ethical, then we must also discuss what specifically humans want to conserve (Norton 15). Is it limited just to animal species, or can it extend to populations, ecosystems, and natural processes? If we simply identify wild animals, then we must ask ourselves if we are preserving a wild species if the animals themselves are forced to spend their lives in captivity? He mentions a common analogy used among zoo professionals who refer themselves to a modern day Noah’s ark, preserving each species by removing individuals for conservation. If zoos represent a sanctuary from extinction, then we must also address if there will ever be a natural habitat to reintroduce the animals into, or if they be forced to remain on the zoos “Ark” indefinitely (Norton 16). Though the work of various ethical scholars and philosophers may not be able to provide a concrete answer to all of the respective questions, I will discuss the concept of reintroduction when analyzing the third argument of this essay.
The issue on whether or not to keep animals in captivity has been debated heavily for a long time. With species such as the panda on the verge of extinction to mistreatment of marine mammals in theme parks such as Sea World, keeping wild animals under the care of humans has been a struggle and a highly controversial topic. Even though many people believe that animals should not be kept in captivity because humans are incapable of fully understanding and providing specific needs for wild animals, certain animals can be kept happy and healthy in captivity, and these animals are an important educational tool for teaching people of all ages about biology, biodiversity, and the ecosystems of the world.
Zoos present a certain blend of nature and culture. They have always provided a way to bring natural wildlife and urban Americans together as a means of entertainment. Yet, throughout the years the role of zoos have changed. Though once used for amusement, zoos are now being used for education on preservation and the welfare of endangered species. One may wonder where and how the idea of zoos started and just how they, and the environment around them, have changed throughout history.
Founded in 1875 in Buffalo, New York, the Buffalo Zoo quickly became a popular tourist attraction. However, as time went on, the outdated buildings and unenthusiastic employees led to a decline in zoo visitors. The zoo began to face several challenges, and the most significant was the fear of losing its accreditation. The president at the time devised a plan to move the Buffalo Zoo to Delaware Park, but that was quickly blocked by employees of the zoo and members of the community. With no support and no where to turn, the president decided to resign. This left the zoo with no plan, and no one to guide them. After extensive searching, the zoo made the decision to hire 43-year-old Donna Fernandes. Donna had an extensive background in education and experience in management and caring for animals. Although Donna seemed like the perfect candidate for the position, she was warned that the employees and community would be reluctant to accept her due to previous negative experiences with poor management and failed attempts to save the zoo. This did not deter Donna, and she worked hard to change those negative experiences into positive ones.
The El Paso Zoo is a well-known for making everyone’s arrival one to remember. Each time I would go to the zoo, I always leave with a smile on my face because of the great service they bring towards El Paso. The reason why I decided to write about the zoo is because I was once a worker there. It is marvelous seeing all of those magnificent animals. They must be at least twenty different types of species we have in El Paso. Which is totally awesome.
The Bronx Zoo: Welcome To The Jungle Where in the world can you see grizzly bears wrestling in the water, giraffes walking through the grass, and penguins playing in the snow, all in a span of a few minutes? Welcome to the Bronx Zoo. The Bronx Zoo was founded on November 8, 1899, by the Boone and Crockett Club which was later renamed the Wildlife Conservation Society.
In addition to both being a sanctuary for animals, both Popcorn Park and Noah’s Ark have adoption kennels. These zoos are trying their best to find homes for animals in need. Popcorn Park has a large kennel with a high adoption
Zimbabwean officials claim that the thirteen year old lion was lured from his home on protected land, and was then wounded with an arrow shot by Palmer. The black-maned lion was then allegedly pursued for 40 hours before finally being killed.
The animal king (Marahambae) died of a rare disease that made him slowly deteriorate mentally and physically.Doctors tried to help but there is no cure to it. The animals in the Nevada state zoo are extremely upset about the tragic death. Many of the animals are furious and are running mad around their cages. The animals begin to escape their enclosures and helping others break free as well! You the zookeeper are the only one working because all your co-workers quit because they felt they were in danger. Your boss leaves it up to you to get all the animals back in their habitat so the zoo can reopen. You terrified or ot have to get the job done before the zoo is closed
With the holidays right around the corner, adopting an animal for your loved ones from the Grosse Pointe Animal Adoption Shelter is a great idea. As long as you’re 18 years or older, you could give a dog or cat a happy and loving home for the holidays.
Being a second grader, the Atlanta Zoo was an alternate universe. Traveling with my Girl Scout troup caused lots of chattering and giggling. We found ourselves starting out with the flamingo exhibit. Being the morning, the flamingos were very active and showed off their brightly colored pink feathers to me. Moving on we visited all other kinds of birds like the Ground Hornbill, Lappet faced Vulture, Cassowary, Kookaburra, and many more. I could not believe how many birds there were and all with different markings. After gazing above tree we decided to look down inside the rocks at a Giant Tortoise. The shell helped to camouflage the big tortoise well, but not well enough for we soon caught sight of him. After seeing some of the coolest animals
Fort Worth Zoo provide a home to more than five hundred kinds of animals, and it contains a variety of both enclosed and outdoor collection which includes primates, raptor canyon, and Asian falls. The primate world was started in the year 1992 and occupies a 2.5-acre land. At the zoo, I got to observe a group of monkeys as well as a set of gorillas. Fort Worth Zoo is the exclusive Zoo in Texas to accommodate members of the four Ape kinds. These four groups are the gorillas, orangutans, bonobos and chimpanzees. I also noted that Fort Worth Zoo is the leading zoo internationally in preserving the Asian elephant and harbours two rhino species that are in danger of poaching, that is the one-horned Asian rhinos and the black rhinos.
Each three-day break provided a multitude of opportunities for an untethered 19-year-old to exercise his independence, sew some oats and inevitably get into trouble. Combine that with an abundance of alcohol in a country where the drinking age seems to be non-existent, and the mind would provide a scenario designed to test my limits and nothing seemed impossible!
I brought my Himalayas (17yrs) into Noah's Ark Clinic for the first time, because he wasn't receiving the special care needed for his senior years. The recommendations and changes Dr. Julie made a difference to his quality of life in the end. When it was time to let go, the euthanasia was preformed with compassion and he went peacefully. A much appreciated donation was made to to Animal Archives registry to the memory of Como.
