RESEARCH QUESTION AND HYPOTHESIS
Problem Statement
As seen from the literature, there is a problem with ensuring that resources to further education are delivered to rural high school students. This problem is apparent in the fact that rural high school students cannot benefit from programs like Strive because of their distance from major universities. We want to study this problem further because the low college attendance and graduation rates of rural states like Idaho mean that teens are lacking opportunities to better their living situations, broaden their minds, and greater contribute their talents to society.
Research question
With this problem in mind, the purpose of the study is to find out whether the use of online peer mentoring in programs such as Strive for College are as effective as in-person peer mentoring, and whether further efforts should be made to allocate resources and time towards online mentoring. The questions to be addressed are as follows:
1. Is the practice of online peer mentoring as effective at getting at risk high school students to go on to higher education as its in-person counterpart?
2. Can students possess a positive relationship with mentor support using online peer mentoring as much as they do with in-person peer mentoring?
From what we have learned from the literature, we hypothesize that online mentoring will be as successful as its in-person counterpart and that a positive relationship through online mentoring can be maintained.

To be a good mentor you have to have great qualities like being helpful and being really good at giving good constructive criticism. Whomever you're mentoring should receive information that is both positive and negative. You want to makes sure you give pros and cons so that your mentee can learn from them. (Patterson) Some social activities that you can do in mentoring programs include talking about life experiences, having lunch together, and visiting the mentor's home for a bonding experience. (Wexler) Although most mentoring programs usually have short durations and are claimed to be a “waste of money,” they are beneficial to girls because they prevent peer pressure, diseases, and pregnancies; encourage girls to be more mannerable, respectful, and ladylike; and results in kids being more likely to graduate high school and attend college.
Peer mentoring is one of a range of peer support frameworks used in schools where students provide support to other students. Peer mentoring provides an alternative avenue of support by offering support from the peer group rather than adults. Research has shown that students respond well to peer mentors and feel a connection with someone that is closer to their age and more closely connected to the experience of high school. The mentors serve in a dichotomous role as older more experienced source of support that one can turn to for advice and guidance, while simultaneously serving as a friend and peer that one can relax and have fun with. There was one graduate who identified himself as an online student. Since the assumption was made that the students would be affected by social and academic in their persistence, on-line students may have a disadvantage by not having the connections of a fraternity or being a part of a team as a support system to be successful. Another aspect that could be analyzed is the persistenace from students who started at MSU as freshmen, and compare that information with students who transferred from community college or other institutions.
A program has been in existence for the past 11 years, created by a group of researchers from Drexel University called the “I Could Be” program, in order to study the effects of online mentoring. So far the results have been mostly positive. Online mentoring can be both an effective and viable option when compared to the traditional face-to-face method. Given the current nature of working conditions, organizations may seek to implement e-mentoring programs due to their ability to be both cost-effective and time saving compared to the traditional approach. The study showed that students who were comfortable using computers tended to get the most out of the program. Students with the lowest level of confidence at the beginning of the program saw the biggest gains. One of the major drawbacks is that, you’re not face-to-face. The major advantage is the ease of access to more than one mentor. Concerns regarding the overall security of children may have helped to slow the growth of this type of program.
Based on the analysis of the data collected for this research, academic and social assimilation was necessary to keep African American women college students in community colleges. Every mentoring relationship may differ student to student, but overall, mentoring helps students to develop self-confidence, educational goals, and the aspiration to be successful in an educational setting. As seen in the results of this survey, students thought that consulting was the most helpful service offered by the AASP, as faculty mentors were able to develop compelling relationships outside the classroom to contribute to their academic success. One thing I believe is a necessity in growing up is having a mentor. Having a mentor is, not only, beneficial for the mentee but also the mentor. Being a mentor is a learning experience for everyone participating, it helps people grow as a person and friendships are created when a bond if formed. Some people might think it's a waste of time for a child or that it'll never work out for a troubled delinquent but based on the research I've done, I have proven them wrong. Through-out this paper I will provide the pros and cons of mentoring and how they affect both mentor and mentee. To back up my proposal that mentoring is supporting, I will supply examples to answer the question: Is mentoring really important?
Establishing an effective mentoring relationship reminds me of the ancient African proverb, “It takes a village to raise a child," meaning that the work of raising a child cannot be done alone; an entire community must participate in providing extensive social support that child rearing necessitates. It is very rare for children in any society to grow into functioning adults without some kind of interacting from the community at large.
Mentoring is relationship orientated – it provides a safe environment where the mentore shares any issues which can affect their mentors professional and personal success. Mentoring also focuses on work/life balance, self confidence and self perception.

Implementing a strong mentoring program that fosters individual and personal growth within the company is vital for the future of this firm. This includes setting up and maintaining a mentoring program. The mentoring program will be set up with individuals from all levels of achievement, that are willing to devote a portion of their time to the firm’s prosperity.
Accompanied with the current shift towards more organic organisation structures and more emphasis on the learning organisation, mentoring provides a more all round experience to the mentees by getting them confident with their role with the organisation. It also improves communication throughout the organisation by allowing mentees to give feedback and learn in a not so formal fashion which helps people feel more relaxed and develops the formal and informal culture of the organisation.
As part of my introduction, I would like to mention that my research project is about mentoring where I have chosen ‘questioning’ as my strategy. In this report, I will discuss in detail about my ‘Mentoring through Questioning’, which is a key for my research project report. Here, I will cover the project’s context in which it was set, my aims and focus of the project, my justification on why I have chosen mentoring through questioning and the types of questions being used during this project, in support of the relevant literature. And then eventually, I will mention about the interactive sessions between a mentor and mentee, the reflection or the perspectives, specifying the self-analysis as well as the required feedback from mentee as part of the research strategy. Later, I will conclude this report by mentioning about the effectiveness of mentoring sessions and the future actions planned for my skills development.
