Slavery was ending, sidewalks are being paved, and neighborhoods are being taken over by businesses.Yet through it all, the house stubbornly remains. The once beautiful estate has a square frame, with winding balconies, spires, and cupolas. Faulkner illustrates it as “an eye sore among eye sores” (82). The home, at first, was white but now has a “coquettish decay” (82), just as Miss Emily has over the years. Lack of modification expresses refusal to change and the choice to continue living in the past. The yard still contains gasoline pumps and cotton wagons that were used in times of slavery. People of the community complained of a foul, rotting smell circling the perimeter of the house. It was the only home left on the street that fails to follow modernization along with the rest of the community, continuing to reflect old values of southern society. After reading the initial sentences, it can be concurred that this story doesn’t simply describe the life of an old, questionably insane woman, but also the story of the age-old battle between old and new. Through symbolism and an artful arrangement of the events described, Faulkner is able to meticulously weave a tale of the clash between newer and older generations’ views and standards.

In his fictional Jefferson, Mississippi (the county seat of Yoknapatawpha), Faulkner tells a story about Emily, an unhappy woman. The story begins at Emily’s funeral, and all the villagers in the town come to see the inside of the abandoned building (nobody has entered the house for at least ten years). The story flashes back decades before the funeral, Emily’s father dies, and she is left alone. Therefore, the town minister decides to exempt the tax for Emily. A Rose for Emily by William Faulkner is a unique piece of literature. It has a plot which seems somewhat bland, and it is not particularly exciting. However, the ending is quite suprising, and for me it made the story worth reading. I think there are some interesting aspects of this story if you look at it from a feminist point of view. The feminist movement has attempted to elevate the status of the woman to a level equal with men. Feminists have fought for the right of women to be free from the old social restraints which have been in place for so long. A feminist believes a woman should be strong and independent.
