• This poem was very layered and symbolical, which was quite interesting to me as I had to analyze it meticulously in order to decipher each line of the text. Additionally, I found the poem to be very engaging as it forced me to comprehend the message from the perspective of a soldier rather than a journalist or reporter. • The first aspect of the poem that caught my attention was how reflective and nostalgic the soldier portrayed himself. One prime example of this occurring is when the soldier states, “Her sights and sounds; dreams happy as her day;” (12). Here, he is referring to how much pleasure he had in the presence of his homeland, and his desire to go back. Additionally, it is evident that the soldier is longing to return home when …show more content…
Next, the narrator proceeds to assure the reader of his devotion to his homeland by stating, “That there’s some corner of a foreign field that is for ever England.” From this, it is evident that the soldier holds the utmost amount of respect and loyalty to his country, and that he is even willing to put his life on the line in order to defend it. This also provides deeper insight into the mind of a soldier on the battlefield; it is astonishing that he can sustain such a high level of dignity while awaiting his death. The soldier then details how the soil of the Earth will be forever changed after his death when he declares, “There shall be In that rich earth a richer dust concealed;” It can be concluded that the soldier holds the idea dearly that his “dust” will be purer and finer than what was once concealed in the foreign field, which further suggests how confident, masculine, and loyal a soldier must compose oneself even when encountering
The author was giving a message then at the end of the poem it changes. He was giving the message that war happens to everybody and that they will have to go to war at some point in there life. The problem is that they don’t know the bourdon that it puts on the people that he has supported and been supported by until his son is sent of. He gets a totally different feeling when he doesn’t know what could happen to his son. He gets his message across by proving that every body has something to do with war wether they like it or not. Your parents might have been to war, if not them then your uncles, cousins, friends, or your neighbors(old men). Then if it isn’t them it could be your child who is going and the feeling is different, you lose the feeling of security when you cant protect your child. He
The poem was written to show that war is a waste of human life as the soldier knows he will die one day as well as the men around him, just some quicker than others. This can be evident in stanza four of the poem: “I know I’ll join them somewhere, one day.” The language used is more casual than formative, this is effective as it shows the personal feelings and thoughts of the soldier during the time
The memories and feelings that the memorial brings forth from the veteran are the driving force to the tone of the poem. The poems is heavy and heartbreaking. It clearly shows that the visit to the memorial has an enormous impact on the author. The author describes several different visions he has while at the memorial. The visions that he has are as real to him as if they were physically present. The author makes it easy to see and feel things through his eyes. The words used to describe his thoughts and feeling evoke emotions of sadness and at times, even despair.
In the middle of the poem, the speaker arrives at the number of casualties from the war. When he reads this number he can’t believe that he is still alive. As he reads down the names he uses the visual imagery and simile to describe how he expected to find his own name in “letters like smoke” (line 16). This helps the reader understand how lucky the speaker felt about somehow escaping the war still alive. As he goes
I personally like this poem because I feel the warrior inside who faces many obstacles and overcomes them with all my efforts. Like in the poem it portrays an individual or the warrior woman who at any moment will
The poem does it job by delivering its message subtly, but for the people that dive into the text and find the true meaning it leave us with a reminder. The poem is a reminder to respect those who served
I find this poem to be interesting because the ideas and meaning of the poem are simple, but they can easily be interpreted in another meaning. This poem did not have the effect on me that I thought it would have, although I did think it was fascinating to read and listen to. The words seem to blend together, and it makes it smooth to hear. The diction is simple and easily understood, but the some of the concepts may not make sense the first time. I had to read the poem multiple times to attempt to grasp the gist of the
causes the poem to flow, and thus lightens up the dark and serious issue of war. The lines "But ranged as infantry, And staring face to face, I shot at him as he at me, And killed him in his place." are easy to read; however, their meaning is extremely
Like many others soldiers the song writer Lachlan Irvine suffered PTSD being a major reason for writing these poems so people understand what he went through. The meaning of this poem is set upon how bad Vietnam war was like and more focusing on the lesser known parts that happened. The rhetorical questions throughout this poem created great emotional affect upon the audience making them think hard about all these different events. The language used with these questioned is very strong to create lasting effects being extremely upfront one used to
There were a few interesting lines in the poem that were particularly well written. When the mother is denying her kid the right to march, she says “For I fear
An element that I found in the poem “They” that resonated with me was that the war changed them completely. It brought changes physically and mentally. No one came back the same and many people changed for the worse. I can just image the effect of seeing death so close every day but it is different to actually live through it. The poem states “When the boys come back, They will not be the same; for they’ll have fought” (Greenblatt 2023) Those lines make me think of how much we overreact to the small things when in reality people are giving up their lives to fight for my good-being.
The overall message in this poem is a drill sergeant educating young soldiers and preparing them for the harsh reality of war. He is not playing ‘Mr. nice guy’, he is being tough and strict to give the soldiers no easy way out.
“The Soldier” is a poem about a generic, yet ideal soldier, which is indicated by Rupert Brooke’s use of the word “The” instead of “A” when describing the soldier in the title. The usage of “I” and “me” in the poem suggests a first person point of view, which makes the poem more personal and realistic to the reader. This poem is a sonnet because the first stanza contains eight lines and the second stanza contains six. Throughout “The Soldier,” the repetition of “English” and “England” shows how important his homeland is to the soldier and his high level of patriotism. In line five, England is personified, and although England is not a living thing, the soldier sees his country as his creator and as a sort of mother figure. Brooke’s use of alliteration throughout the poem helps it flow; the use of caesura breaks up the lines. Perfect external rhyme scheme and iambic pentameter are used throughout the poem, which both give the poem flow and rhythm. The “dust” in lines four and five is a metaphor for the soldier’s life; England created him and he will become “dust concealed” when he dies and is buried. The first stanza of “The Soldier” uses various lines of imagery: “some corner of a foreign field… In that rich earth a richer dust concealed… flowers… Washed by the rivers, blest by suns of home.” These forms of imagery emphasize the soldier’s death and how his death will cleanse him of any wrongdoings he had done in his time on earth. The “rivers” and “suns” are personified as
The poem starts with similar word choices as ‘The Soldier’ but written in the perspective of the mother. The mother tells his son that when he dies he will be in a place of ‘quietness’ and free from the ‘loss and bloodshed’. This reinforces the fact that the battlefield was full of horrors and death. The poem then moves onto how ‘men may rest themselves and dream of nought’ explaining that the soldiers do not have to fear for their lives after their death. This illustrates how they feared for their lives and had negative connotations.
The first stanza connotes a slight sense structure as the phrase “ and his buddies did too” is repeated after stating each action the soldier does. Moreover, the lines themselves are structured in such a way that suggests a deliberate organized form- especially in comparison to how the rest of the poem is written. Most interesting about the
