Jazz, unlike quite a few new-age genres of music, is one of those types of genres that you have to listen to multiple times in order to get the full effect of a piece. Considering it is more musically complex than a genre such as pop, you can hear something new almost every single time you listen to the same piece. For my CD review, I chose to write about Return to Forever written by Chick Corea, released in November of 1999. Some of the reasons I chose this album is because it is seen as “alternative” jazz, and I was extremely curious as to what that sounded like, and also after listening to the first track, because it has electronic music incorporated within it. The main reason the idea of computer-produced music sparked my interest so much is because normally when I hear something electronically generated (EDM, Dub step, etc.), I end up seriously hating it. …show more content…

Unlike Crystal Silence, this track is very upbeat and quickly moving. This is also the first track on the album to feature vocals with true lyrics. When hearing these lyrics for the first time, they really don’t seem to have much significance, but after listening to the track quite a few times, I’ve developed my own interpretation of with the song’s message was. In the lines “Man just wants to be happy, cast off things that shouldn't be. Set him free. Life is paradise,” I believe that Corea is trying to say that we should let go of things that don’t have a strong sense of significance in our lives, and just make it a goal to be happy. That life is a gift and that we set barriers to happiness for ourselves. Along with the lyrics themselves, the music sounds very up beat and playful, which really adds on to the whole idea of peace, love, and happiness.
