In May of 1998, Kipland Kinkel brought a gun to his school. Over the course of two days this escalated from: being sent home, to murdering his father and mother, to murdering 2 students and wounding 26, earning a lifetime sentence of 111 years and 8 months in prison. In the court case being examined, the presiding judge addresses the original case, defendants ground for appeal, and the justification for the State’s decision to deny the appeal. Judge Haselton effectively uses ethos, logos, and pathos to support the Higher Court’s decision to deny the appeal because the original sentence was constitutional and just.

Due to a successful implementation of the rhetorical appeals logos and ethos and the usage of appropriate language, Molly Worthen’s article is more effective than Lisa Wade’s article. The usage of logos greatly supports Worthen’s claim because it clarifies the significance of her argument by providing credible statistics while Wade provides an uncited source to which she proceeds to harshly charge the audience. Advertisements are everywhere. From billboards, to magazines, to newspapers, flyers and TV commercials, chances are that you won’t go a day without observing some sort of ad. In most cases, companies use these ads as persuasive tools, deploying rhetorical appeals—logos, pathos, and ethos—to move their audiences to think or act in a certain way. The two magazine ads featured here, both endorsing Pedigree products, serve as excellent examples of how these modes of persuasion are strategically used.
The art of writing is at times concrete and precise, while at other times it is abstract and perplexing. Regardless of the mood or style a piece of writing creates, the majority of speakers want to appeal to their audience. This desire to please is usually associated with three rhetorical appeals: ethos, pathos, and logos. These terms are important tools for persuasion created by Aristotle; he stated that if we believe a speaker is honorable and good, we are more inclined to listen and take what he or she is arguing more seriously. Using different appeals to hook an audience is clever, and to successfully persuade an audience is a skill that some spend their lives perfecting, especially when their argument will be critiqued and exposed to the general public.

In “Bring Back Flogging”, Jeff Jacoby addresses the problems within America 's criminal justice system. He gives many reasons why imprisonment simply does not work, and suggests that corporal punishment should be used as an alternative. Published in the Boston Globe, a newspaper well known for being liberal, Jacoby provides a conservative view and directs his argument towards those who strongly support imprisonment and view corporal punishment to be highly barbaric and inhumane. However, in order to shed light on our current situation, Jacoby discusses the dangers that we face though our criminal justice system a nd shows concern that imprisonment is doing more harm than good. Living in a country that provides access to great health care, one would expect the United States to have a sufficient supply of medical professionals such as doctors. After all, the country has a booming population and is home to many respected institutions with driven and compassionate medical students. However, in the March 3, 2015 edition of The Washington Post, Lenny Bernstein addresses a relatively new problem in healthcare. In the article, “U.S. Faces 90,000 Doctor Shortage by 2025, Medical School Association Warns”, Bernstein successfully creates a real sense of this crisis through his use of logos and diction to address the expected shortage of medical doctors.
In accounts of true crime seen today, rhetoric is often used to impact readers and how they receive the information presented in the article or given argument. The use of rhetorical devices such as ethos, pathos, and logos ensures that the information appeals to not only one area of communication, and effectively gets across to the intended audience.
In class, we have discussed rhetoric, discourse communities, and the importance of properly conveying a point. While my professor, Mr. Larry D. Huff, does not seem to believe in the “rhetorical triangle,” we have had successful discussions on the ways we can prove a point using ethos, pathos, and logos. I successfully joined a discourse community and learned its respective ethos, pathos and logos. My sophomore year of high school, I auditioned and was accepted to the theatre department of The High School for Performing and Visual Arts and joined a discourse community which changed my life. On May 12, 1962, General Douglas MacArthur addressed the cadets at the West Point Military Academy in his speech Duty, Honor, Country, during the reception for the Sylvanus Thayer Award. This award is given to an “…outstanding citizen of the United States whose service and accomplishments in the national interest exemplify personal devotion to the ideals expressed in the West Point motto, duty, honor, country.” As the one receiving this prestigious award, General MacArthur truly exemplified these values as he had acquired the rank of General of the Armed Forces while serving in World War I, World War II, and the Korean War. In many papers you will notice different types of persuasion that help the writer to give a reader a better of understanding of the paper. These types of persuasion are called rhetorical appeals. Each appeal has its own ability to give to the writer's paper, ethos is the credibility of the work the writer is using, pathos is appealing to the audience’s emotions, and lastly logos is the logical appeal. When writing a paper a person generally uses at least one rhetorical appeal to persuade their audience.
