“If you put yourself in an environment with lots of different perspectives, you yourself are going to have better, sharper, more original ideas,” stated Steve Johnson in an interview with Salon Media Group. In a surrounding with many different networks of people, ideas will be enhanced with the knowledge of other perspectives. Also, the new ideas will encourage debate and conversation. Not only will other people’s views enhance ideas, but also is crucial for writing on a topic. Acknowledging opposing perspectives will give a writer more authority on the subject being discussed. Also, it gives the audience an opportunity to respect an author. In Steve Johnson’s essay, “Games,” he builds authority through the credibility of his background, researching …show more content…
Johnson has written similar books to these topics and has done research for them, therefore, he must have previous knowledge to some extent before writing “Games.” In the first paragraph Johnson is already showing he has done his research and writes about “Dr. Spock” and what he must say about video games (196). Afterwards, Johnson introduces another source he has studied, this time about reading, written by Andrew Solomon (197). Both studies Johnson introduces shows he has researched both video games and reading. Later in his piece, Johnson writes, “When I read these ostensibly positive accounts of video games…” (200). Johnson is showing the audience he is analyzing video games for himself by reading about them and the actual content of the games. Concluding his piece, he states that video games can be hard (Johnson 201). This statement implies Johnson has played video games himself, otherwise he would be contradicting himself of what he says in the context. He talks about the gap between people who have or have not played them. People who have not played them cannot talk about them “coherently” (201). Therefore, Johnson must have played video games and gained a personal experience that makes him qualified to write about this
Tom Bissell, in his essay, “Extra Lives: Why Video Games Matter” has described video games and how they are unique and different from movies, books, or even interactive films. Bissell says “I came to accept that games were incompetent with almost every aspect of what I would call traditional narrative.” This is showing the readers that even though there is a plot and story line, as characters can control and alter the story line or outcome by what you do or see throughout the game.

For years if someone says the phrase “Just Do It” the majority of people realize that the three small words are coined by Nike. The same goes for when someone says Nike in a speech or conversation, people assume that the person means that they should just go ahead and do whatever it was that was being discussed. “Just Do It” is not known by an ample audience because a company tells people to say the phrase or they happened to see it in a magazine. The phrase is well known to people because Nike knows how to appeal to a certain audience. That is how they have transformed into such an enormous athletic company that has reached people globally.
In his essay “Dream Machines”, Will Wright emphasises the benefit of video games in modern society. He thinks that video games can teach players to solve problems, be more creative and interesting person overall. Will Wright is trying to tell people that we can all benefit from playing and exploring the worlds of gaming. “Watching someone play a game is a different experience than actually holding the controller and playing it yourself”. These words mean that people who never played video games themselves should not judge and critisize gamers, because you could not know the flavor of an apple only by looking at it, right? I am going to to agree with what Will Wright said about video gaming and gamers themselves, because I myself played
This shows the wide verity of this game which adds more to the reason why this game is magnificent. You might ask how this information applies to his thesis: “Why video games matter?” All of this information provides logical facts that interest gamers around the world. The game provides a traditional narrative that allows for an experience framed in terms of wandering and lonesomeness, a purpose that is needed.
A library can be a repository of knowledge or a squirrel’s worst nightmare. With this in mind an angle of vision is being created. An angle of vision is not simply written, it is carefully and deliberately constructed through the proper use of five rhetorical strategies. Word Choice, Sentence Structure, Overt Statements, Figurative Language, and Selection and Omission of Details are the strategies used by writers to create the angle of vision. To understand these strategies I have written two paragraphs that are similar in description yet carry vastly different angles of vision.
Johnson did use the word session very repetitively . I think it's because he wanted to inform the people that congress and he are working hard to make an influence on America. For him to mention how the session has accomplished over the last year and how hard they word really shows that they care about the American people. It makes the audience feel like they can come out of poverty with his plans. The imagery you used I like it remains me of the saying the sun will always sunshine no matter what. Johnson gives a lot of hope to the people by being personal and he also had a firm voice and action plan. This made congress and the people feel like they have a sense of trust with
The essay His Last Game by Brian Doyle is one meant to show the inner-psyche of a person with ADHD. Two brothers on their drive to get some sort of prescription are on a drive. They both make a couple bets down the line and start to reminisce about the past and their experiences. However, though the essay may be relatively interesting to read, I believe that it was not without its faults. Therefore, the essay took certain grammatical roles, such as having the sentence structure slowly change from shorter more focused sentences into longer more elaborate ones. I feel as though the actual content of the essay and the memories embedded within the words becomes lost. The bets and the basketball game are resolved in such ways that only the brothers would understand. However, I suppose since this is a simply just a memory, we should be trustworthy of his experiences here.
I have chosen to focus on the columnist Steve Chapman who writes for the Chicago Tribune under the opinion column on the Chicago Tribune website. He most commonly writes editorials showing both sides, but puts an emphasis on his opinion almost to persuade the reader towards his side. I believe he would be a good person to analyze because he keeps current with the pieces he writes, and they are all focused on controversial topics that arise such as the recent Las Vegas shooting, or the legalization of marijuana in the state of Illinois. Additionally, his topics can also broaden out to writing about international affairs in an attempt to keep his readers informed on the world around them. He has been a part of the editorial board for the Chicago
The tone that would be most effective in convincing the audience to agree with the author’s claim would be perspicacious, persuasive, and earnest. The tone helps make the issue more significant to the audience for example when Lee says “When you consider how little of the course of the ball the third boy saw before he started to run, and take into account – or better still experience – the other difficulties involved in the whole performance, you will realize that such feats, though seen every day on every ball field, are somewhat remarkable. At least things equally difficult done by boys in their arithmetic lessons would be considered so.”, meant that the author is trying to convey that sports require the same level of mental work and are
Good morning to you. My name is Jholar. I am a pre-dental student that came to Pittsburgh because University of Pittsburgh had the number one dental school in America. Spring of 2015, I was taking two classes which got challenging, so I made a smart move to drop the two classes. I tried seeking help over the phone from the Community College of Allegheny County, and my previous college in Atlanta, but I had no luck.
Using the analogy of being in a role modeling game is brilliant on multiple different levels. A reason for this being true, is because a lot of men play video games, therefore they can connect with this way of thinking. In particularly, he connects the Real Life game to World of Warcraft, as the way this game is played has shared features with the game of the Real World. While reading it I found that as a reader, once one was hooked and competitively ramped up, he uses one’s own connections to transition to the actual point. I think this serves a great purpose, because by getting the audience to connect in the beginning they were able to respond in an appropriate way when the example was transferred to the real word
He wants to inform his audience of the scares of how technology is evolving. Also, how that only is supporting the desire to play the games and creating a possible avenue for businesses to take advantage of the people through this weakness for video games. Although, he was clearly was against playing video games he left his opinion out for the most part and his criticism came through, historical information and quotes of those who matter to the subject. Anderson’s writing was meant to be read by the common person because his writing doesn’t require much background information and he would want as many people as possible to red this and consider his ideas. His point was very clear but his tone in the writing can come off as quick stated and rude. Anderson doesn’t give much of the opposing opinion and when he did he dismissed it right away. His writing although well read and interesting it didn't pull me over to his side. The article try to push the readers to Anderson’s point of view and this is where it was most lacking because it felt like a repetitive thesis through out the
game of cricket and sharing his past playing experiences, thus, being friendly with us. After a while, he followed up with a request for a $20 donation to a charitable organization that he was representing. Some of them willingly gave away $20. For others it was a surprise, so he made a concession of giving at least $10.
In “Everything Bad Is Good For You,” Steven Johnson discusses why and how he believes today’s popular culture is actually making us smarter, rather than dumbing us down. Johnson has his book split into two different parts, focusing mainly on the first part of his book, he talks about the ways people consume media and how it has become more complex and challenging over the years. The title headings for each sub-chapters are - Video Games, Television, Internet, and Movies. Within each subchapter he uses a vast number of examples from each section to support his argument. The biggest part the first chapter is dedicated to video games. Johnston suggests that when video games were first released that people thought they made us dumber and wasted our mind’s skills. He uses the example about how if video games had arrived before books, we would be more hesitant towards books. We would be looking at the negative aspects of book reading and how they are isolating, under-stimulating and do not engage enough. Stating that we use books to test cognitive benefits – attention, memory, focus and following threads, Johnston goes into a detail about how video games uses all these skills and more. He uses examples from Tetris, Pac-Man, SimCity200 and even The Legend of Zelda. Continuing his argument that video games engage us more that any other media our there at the moment, he acknowledges how to reward system and the desire to explore in video games keep us engaged. No other form of
