Every fictional story has a theme. Theme is a central idea which can be morals, life-lessons, messages, etc. It is a debatable truth, and can be valid no matter what as-long-as you can back it up with evidence from the text. I am certain with my life the story “Rikki-Tikki-Tavi” has the theme of “Look before you leap.” The author, Rudyard Kipling, gives evidence all throughout this short story that will back me up and help me prove to you, the reader, I am right. I know my theme is correct because all of the snakes jumped into trying to attack everyone and only thinking about themselves. They had not thought of any consequences. Even though I know this is the theme, other people have their own opinions on the central idea. Other people could …show more content…
For instance, in the rising action, Karait had came out of the bushes saying “I am death.” He did this without knowing what Rikki-Tikki’s strengths were. In fact, all of the snake, at different time throughout the story, had done this. They all tried to attack Rikki-Tikki without knowing what he was capable of doing. Another example of how the snakes had not thought of any consequences was when Nagaina had sent Nag into the Bungalow during the rising action. She was only thinking of how she wanted the people and Rikki-Tikki gone. To emphasize the point of how the snakes had only been thinking of themselves, here’s another example. Nagaina at one point was only thinking of killing the family as “revenge” for Nag and she had forgotten the main reason why Nag was gone. Nag would not have been dead if it wasn’t for Nagaina telling him to kill the people for the eggs, but mostly for herself. Given these points, you can see both the minor antagonists and the major antagonists should have thought through their …show more content…
One example would have been how Chuchundra, in the rising action, had thought through decisions when he thought about the snakes. He was thinking about the slight chance the snake would hear Rikki-Tikki and himself talking. This was really smart thinking considering how Chuchundra was constantly in fear. He had made a decision that could have meant life or death. Some of my stronger points would have been when Darzee had been thinking when he said, “Rikki-Tikki, you are not going to eat her eggs are you?” This showed that the character Darzee was thinking about the protagonist. He was thinking about how if Rikki went and tried eat those eggs, the antagonist, Nagaina, could be anywhere in the garden. She could be there, and in a flash of a second, kill Rikki. Then there would have been no end to the story. It would have ended quickly right there. In addition to the points above, Rikki-Tikki had made some very well thought out decisions of his own. To start off, Rikki had made the decision to not follow Nag and Nagaina into the bushes after Nagaina had just tried to attack him. If he had made the decision to follow them, he would have have probably gotten killed. Yet again, ending the story short. Another key point would be when the main character, Rikki-Tikki, had used the words, “Now, if I kill him here, Nagaina will know.” He had clearly been thinking about
Once Rikki-Tikki found her, all of the depression made way for a wave of rage. She would have gladly launched herself at him, but he had her last egg hostage. Once again, Nagaina was depressed because of the loss of
Rikki Tikki is a leader in this story. ’’’Darzee, if you have a grain of sense, you will fly off to the stables and pretend that your wing is broken and let Nagaina chase you away to this bush. I must get to the melon- bed, and if I went there now, she’d see me’’’(Pg 15). This demonstrates that he is a leader because he orders Darzee to pretend his wing is broken. This shows demonstrates that he has the confidence to take action. “Nagaina spun clear
Teddy and his family had Rikki for quite some time, and he was curious around the house. In the movie right before bed Teddy was taking a bath Rikki was climbing on the side of it and fell into the tub. This is a similarity of both the story and the movie. One difference is written in the story that “Rikki nearly drowned himself in the bathtub, put his nose into ink on a writing table, and burnt it on the end of the big man’s cigar.” (Kipling 144). The movie didn’t show any of this it hadn’t been shown. One night when the cobra couple nag and nagaina were talking outside of the house they were planning on killing the family so Rikki would go away and leave the
Nag and Nagaina are king cobras who tried to kill Rikki and the family he lived with. In both the movie and the story, Nag is the main enemy and Nagaina is his wife. "Who is Nag," said he. "I am Nag. The great God Brahm put his mark upon all our people, when the first cobra spread his hood to keep the sun off Brahm as he slept. Look, and be afraid!" [Kipling 146]. In the end they are also both killed by Rikki. “And Nag was dead before the big man blew him in two I did it ” [Kipling 154]. The main difference is that in the book Nagaina bosses Nag around and in the movie they act like equals. “But are you sure that there is anything to be gained by killing the people?" said Nag "Everything. When there were no people in the bungalow, did we have any mongoose in the garden? So long as the bungalow is empty, we are king and queen of the garden; and remember that as soon as our eggs in the melon bed hatch (as they may tomorrow), our children will need room and quiet” Nagaina said" [Kipling
His courageous was able the save the many animals and people that lived in the garden and the house. One part that shows how Rikki-tikki-tavi is brave, is on page 27 in the story, “If Rikki-tikki had only known, he was doing a much more dangerous thing than fighting Nag, for Karait is so small, and can turn so quickly, that unless Rikki bit him close to the back of the head, he would get the return stroke in his eye or his lip.” This statement shows how Rikki-tikki-tavi was brave even though he had put his life at risk for others. The Karait as it states in the evidence in very quick, so the snake could end Rikki-tikki-tavi’s life with one blow. Rikki-tikki-tavi didn’t back away and let the little British boy get hurt, but he put his life at risk and defeated the Karait, which saved the British family. Nevertheless, Rikki-tikki-tavi was still tremendously scared, because he was a young mongoose who just entered this new land. Even though, Rikki-tikki-tavi could have just ran off of fright, but he decided to save the boy and his family from the Karait, death. Not only is Rikki-tikki-tavi courage, but he still cares for the family that nursed him back to
If they chase off all the animals they will surely die. Selfishly, she puts Nag into the skirmishes because she is apprehensive and doesn’t want any damage to come to her. Then come out and tell me, and we will hunt for Rikki-tikki together.” Nagaina spoke. As this demonstrates Nagaina wanting Nag to kill all of the people to make sure that it is safe for her to come out of hiding
Rikki-tikki-tavi should be proud of himself because he saved Teddy from Nagaina on Page 21. His quote was, “ Turn round , Nagaina; turn and fight ! ” Then, on page 22, Rikki-tikki came out of the ground and said, “ It is all over, and the widow will never come out again. “ Finally, on page 22, Rikki-tikki said, “ Tell the Coppersmith, Darzee, and he will tell the garden that Nagaina is dead.”
During the night, Nag and Nagaina were planning to eliminate Teddy’s family. The only person or thing that stood in their way was Rikki. He knew battling Nag was going to be dangerous and hard, Rikki was even kind of scared. However, he did not back down from the fight, for it would mean danger for Teddy and his family. Rikki planned to surprise Nag and bite him in the back of the head, Nag’s main weakness. Once Nagaina left and Nag was not paying attention, Rikki jumped onto Nag, bit him in the head and hung on for dear life. After a while, Teddy’s family showed up and his dad shot him with a shotgun, killing
Rikki-Tikki was a strong mongoose that wasn’t afraid of anything not even snakes. The movie and the story Rikki-tikki had many things that weren’t the same which made them very different. RikkiTikki was faced with challenges which made his journey difficult. In the end Rikki Tikki kills both of the snakes and is called a hero. Rikki did not do all of this on his own, but he had the help of some of his friends along the way which also made his journey fun and interesting. Chuchundra gave Rikki advice, while Nag and Nagina would try and test him. Rikki also had help from Darzee. Darzee helped by fighting the two snakes or giving him positives feedback like calling him a hero. There are many similarities and differences with the characters, setting, and the conflict of both the story and the movie.
The antagonist was being selfish when she made Nag go an try to kill Rikki-tikki, she was thinking of herself and herself only. In this short story it states that Nagaina left Nag when it was her plan she told Nag to kill Rikki-tikki and his family. For determined to harm others the story clearly states that Nagaina. “ You warned Rikki-tikki, I would have to kill him.” I thought that was a skilled quote of her showing the reader that Nagaina was determined to kill Rikki-tikki.
The resolution is the movie and the resolution in the story “Rikki-Tikki-Tavi” are very similar and only slightly different. In the book, the resolution is that the family is very grateful for Rikki-Tikki because he saved the whole family's lives and that Rikki-Tikki will always keep the garden safe. The story says,”Rikki-tikki had a right to be
Rikki-Tikki-Tavi is a short story by Rudyard Kipling. It is about a small mongoose named Rikki-Tikki, who is washed away from his family in a small flood. He lives in a bungalow with a small family, and Rikki must fight the cobras threatening the family to keep them safe. This essay will prove how Rikki-Tikki-Tavi is confident, determined, and very stealth like. To start, Rikki showed that he was confident by proving to Nagaina that it was him that killed her husband Nag, not the man.
Rikki-Tikki was trying to kill the snakes and protect Teddy’s family because they saved him. Rikki-Tikki was found on a roadside ditch about to die, so Teddy’s family took care of him. As a result, Rikki-Tikki wants to help them. In “Rikki-Tikki-Tavi”, written by Rudyard Kipling, it says, “They wrapped him in a cotton wool and warmed him over a fire until he sneezed and opened his eyes.”Rikki-Tikki was near death, so teddy’s family saved him. In paragraph 111, it says,”til never a cobra dared show his head inside the walls.”Rikki-Tikki killed the snakes and kept his friends and Teddy’s family safe.
She does this by going into the bungalow and kill the humans. During this time, Rikki-Tikki is sabotaging Nagaina’s eggs and Darzee’s wife rushes to inform Rikki-Tikki of the situation. Once he arrives, Nagaina tells Rikki-Tikki “I will settle my account with you presently…if you come a step nearer I strike” (Kipling).
Rikki-Tikki did and should of stood up for himself because, Nag and Nagina were threating Rikki-Tikki-Tavi and threating to kill his family. If Rikki-Tikki-tavi didn’t stand up for himself, he would have lost his family and he could of even died so it was right for him to stand up for himself. Another reason he should have stood up for himself and family is because not only would nag
