he events leading up to the climax are considered to be the rising action. The rising action is a series of relevant incidents that create suspense, interest, and tension in a narrative. The rising action can include things from decisions to character flaws to a twist leading to a climax. Short stories and tales are written differently because of the content that they contain. A short story involves a main character with a measurable goal as to where a tale involves a series of events that might not be related to a goal. The two stories that are about to be described relate to each other in some ways but are very different in other ways. The rising action quickly begins when three young ladies walk into a grocery store in nothing but bathing suits, causing heads to turn and confused looks to appear on the faces of many including one store employee named Sammy. One of the young ladies, who Sammy refers to as Queenie, according to Sammy, is the most beautiful person ever and with that being said he starts to give her special treatment ignoring other customers. While checking out a customer, Sammy says the phrase,” I ring it up again and the customer started giving me hell” (Updike), this one simple line in the story shows how much Sammy was distracted, he could not focus on anything else except getting Queenies attention, leading his boss to get mad. The boss, Lengel comes over to question the girls on their apparel, leading Sammy to defend them and quit, not considering the repercussions that could be made. The location in this story is in a grocery store called The Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company, also known as A&P. Narrated by the main character and also the protagonist, Sammy tells this story in his point of view. Creating a perspective from a teenagers’ stand point, Sammy explains to the readers what he feels is happening; however, like any other teenager, he does not think about the consequences or even realize that the girls do not care and they leave the
