Growing up in a small island in the Caribbean, we did not listen to too much rock and roll, and the little rock we did listen was no what they considered Classic Rock back then. I was able to listen so some groups like Boston, REO Speedwagon, Jefferson Starship, AC/DC, Journey, Queen and other 80’s rock groups. But if I need to pick one of the two options, I would go with the Rolling Stones. The tempo, the rhythm, the vocals and songs of the Rolling Stones, appeal to me more than the Beatles. I am not saying that the Rolling Stones are better than the Beatles, all I am saying is that I prefer the Rolling Stones music over the Beatles. Both groups have lots of great songs, and they are both equally great but the Rolling Stones Rock/blues
The Rolling Stones, self-acclaimed and fan-supported, is “The World’s Greatest Rock and Roll Band.” The Rolling Stones is well into its fifth decade performing together as a group. They are the longest lived, continuous performing band in the history of music. From the band’s early British beginnings through the present, The Rolling Stones has continued to adapt its music to the sounds and styles of the past five decades, to remain ever visible and popular in the eyes of the world. The “Stones,” as the band has become known by, was formed by the blues-loving London born, childhood friends, Mick Jagger and Keith Richards. Over the period following Jagger’s and Richards’ chance reunion on a train at the Dartford
The Beatles are one of the most innovative rock bands of all time. They have not only changed the way rock and roll is looked at, but also the way that the music is recorded. They have influenced the artists of the 60s and the 70s, and also many generations later and to come. Originating from Liverpool, England, the Beatles, or the Fab Four, consists of Paul McCartney, John Lennon, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr. Topping the charts in ’63 with “Love Me Do,” and bringing in the highest rated viewing in history while performing on the Ed Sullivan Show, the Beatles are definitely a band that broke the sound barrier of rock
The Beatles were thought of as legends when it came to music that Socs liked. They thought the Beatles were the coolest band and thought that Elvis, the Greasers rock hero wasn't even close to being as cool.
. Who's Your favorite hero? Not every hero has a super power. In To Kill a Mockingbird, Atticus is the people's hero. He is one of the greatest heroes of all time. In Harper Lee’s novel To Kill a Mockingbird, the character of Atticus Finch represents Lee’s idea of social justice by demonstrating wisdom, bravery, and integrity as he responds to conflict.
Tupelo MS is where it all began. The birthplace of Elvis Presley, it is also the birthplace of rock-n-roll and the transformation of American culture. Now, as it was then, this small town in the north-eastern corner of the state of Missouri is rather off the beaten track. But it still attracts a steady stream of visitors, from boomers reliving their greatest years to millennials trying to understand what the fuss was all about.
Also known as the fab four the Beatles were able to bring joy and happiness back to the country after John Kennedy was assassinated which was one of America’s troubling and trying times in the 60’s. As the Beatles apparel and hairdos became more thrilling and the Beatles were wearing facial hair in 1966 which was one of their many laidback behaviors that coordinated with those of the counterculture, including smoking marijuana and taking mind-altering drugs. The next item we found was a 1967 Rolling Stones magazine. The Rolling Stone came out around the same time as what was called the hippie movement. It covered a lot of music, politics, and culture. In the 60’s anybody who bought the magazine only paid 35 cents per magazine. Some of the stories covered in 1967 in the magazine were about The Beatles, Tina Turner, and John Lennon. According to research “As Rolling Stone founder and Hall of Fame Inductee Jann Wenner observed: “When Rolling Stone started, music was the only medium available to young people to express themselves and share ideas” (Fagan,
Throughout the many years of music, rock bands have come and gone leaving a lasting imprint on society. Among the many bands and artists, arguably the most influential band in the history of rock and roll are The Rolling Stones. During their fifty years as a band, The Rolling Stones pioneered an image that influenced society among the topics of ethics, religion, and fashion.
I found it interesting to learn how the Beatles had gone by many different names before they officially became the Beatles. That was something I never was aware of, but it makes sense as they were constantly evolving to become the successful musicians they are today. The Beatles’ success allowed for The Rolling Stones to make an easy transition into the British invasion. Even though they were quite the opposite, they were known to be friends. It was very interesting to learn how George Harrison, one of the Beatles, helped The Rolling Stones be signed by Dick Rowe, who is known for turning down the Beatles, by actually recommending them.
In 1964, The Rolling Stones catapulted to fame amid outrage and controversy about the surliness of their demeanor and the length of their hair. The Stones were considered "dangerous" and riots and scenes of hysteria erupted wherever they played. "Today, they're in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, winners of the prestigious Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, and on the cover of TIME magazine" (RIAA; History 2 of 4). "There's nothing new about pop and rock music finding its roots in the anger and rebellion of young people, and there's nothing new in older people expressing unrealistic fears about that music" (RIAA; History 3 of 4). History has shown us that what may be initially perceived as objectionable is actually only the reaction of a new or different experience.
influential in the North as well. Blacks moved from the South to the North and
This week we learned about many genres of music, some similar some different. The two genres I want to compare and contrast are Rock and Blues. When you hear rock music, you picture electric guitars, amplified sounds, and complex styles of play. But if you take a deeper look you would probably be surprised to learn that rock would not even have existed without simple 12-bar forms, antiphonal textures, or “walking bass lines” used in much blues music. Though Rock and Blues are distinctly different they have a lot of similarities that most likely go unnoticed. Rock and Blues were developed at almost the same exact time around the late 19th century. Blues originated from African American folk music and like Blues, rock music style can also be
During the Medieval time period that Canterbury Tales was written in, there was a general depiction of women that they weren’t even looked at as humans, but looked at as objects. Women were thought of as weak, untrustworthy, and even less intelligent beings than men. Chaucer did not necessarily agree with the general consensus of women during the time period. Now there are tales that go along with the general impression of women, but there are also signs that Chaucer looked at women for what they really are and he might have saw them as equal beings. Chaucer was a great mind and that mind was far past his time, as he went against the tide when he wrote and he was not afraid to write whatever came to his head. Canterbury tales can show us what women had to go through in medieval times, and through Chaucer’s tales we can see what he thought of how women were were perceived and treated.
“Rock and roll is a type of popular dance music originating in the 1950s, characterized by a heavy beat and simple melodies. Rock and roll was an amalgam of black rhythm and blues and white country music, usually based on a twelve-bar structure and an instrumentation of guitar, bass, and drums.” (Kamien, 2015, p.378) The popular music was first called rock and then rock and roll then back to simply rock. Rock and roll music contains many diverse styles. Genres that influenced rock and roll music included jazz, gospel, blues, country and western, classical music, and folk music. Rock and roll music has a raw sound that gets the crowd hyped in a special way. The most important instrument used in rock and roll music is the electric guitar. The electric guitar is the reason for the amplified sound in rock and roll music. “Rock-and-roll guitarist Chuck Berry established a style of
Both songs display a very similar make up as far as the band and instruments of choice. The core consists of two guitars, one for lead, and the other for helping maintain rhythm, a bass guitar and drums along with vocals. The difference here is seen in the instruments used to follow the beat. The Beatles utilized hand clapping in the background, standing out distinctly from the drums during a verse, and dissipating as the chorus starts. A good example of this can be heard at 0:07, running until 0:21 as the chorus leads in. The Rolling Stones takes a different approach, using a tambourine and keeping it on a consistent beat throughout the entire
The Rolling Stones were the second most successful band of the British invasion and dived into the mainstream with their hit “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction.” The Rolling Stones had a more aggressive style with loud guitar tones and driving rhythms. And while The Beatles touched on more clean-cut topics, the Stones shocked people with songs about casual drug use and careless sex. Other influential bands of the British Invasion include The Who, Cream, and The Kinks who are now some of rocks greatest legends.
