Stephen L. Carter links integrity and honesty. There are three constraints discussed in this essay. First, integrity does require a degree of moral reflectiveness. Second, Integrity may cause conflict that is must be resolved. It does not necessarily produce or protect interpersonal harmony. Third, a person who has integrity can be trusted. It does not avoid the restructuring of social structures and associations, because it leaves the matter to exercise of interpersonal authority.

One of the most common phrases said from parent to child in our culture is, “If you do not have anything nice to say, do not say anything at all.” Most kids believe their parents because it makes sense. Most kids want to be kind, and it appears that this is the best way to do exactly that. However, the problem lies with the end result. As I personally grew, I learned that this philosophy, although good in its intentions, results in a negative consequence. I discovered that being honest is the only way to easily and effectively interact with the people around me. Once I released this idea from my life, I realized that I felt less obligated to be nice. My thoughts turned to how to be the best person possible, helping myself, and others, in the process. In order to communicate correctly, with as little ambiguity as possible, the human race must also let go of the idea that “if you do not have anything nice to say, do not say anything at all.”
