Introduction Like many of his theories, such as the Oedipus- and the Elektra-Complex, Freud named the two main components of his drive theory after figures of Greek mythology. Eros, the god of sexual desire and attraction (his better known counterpart in Roman mythology – Cupid) and Thanatos the daemon personification of death. These two namesakes could not be more befitting for their respective drives. They already tell the interested reader the essence of, what Freud believed, keeps the mind in balance. Nevertheless, while being linked to psychoanalytic therapy in the general mind, the theory of the drives can also be used to interpret literature and its characters. One of the most prominent examples for a character motivated by these two drives is Edna Pontellier in Kate Chopin's novel The Awakening. One could say that it is Eros and Thanatos that spark her true awakening and motivate her every action. During the course of this paper Eros' and Thanatos' relation to literature and specifically Edna Pontellier will be examined. Looking at it through a psychoanalytical approach, this woman – Edna Ponteillier – is a perfect example for the struggle Eros and Thanatos can awaken in a person. In this text it is very clear that Eros and Thanatos are the main motivation for the way Edna acts and how she changes not only her outlook on the external world, but also herself.
