Romanticism In Young Goodman Brown

Nathaniel Hawthorne's work is considered to be dark romanticism because of his emphasis on the good and evil nature of humans. Through his work he explores the themes of evil, guilt, Puritan life, and sin of humanity. His work also has deep psychological meaning. His short story "Young Goodman Brown" was inspired by the real life events of the Salem Witch Trials. This short story takes place in Salem, Massachusetts, which is where the Salem Witch trials took place. Also, in "Young Goodman Brown" there are witches that are believed to be normal people just like in the Salem Witch Trials. In the fictional short story, "Young Goodman Brown," through the use of symbolism, Hawthorne is able to show that most of the characters are not who they seem to be.
Young Goodman Brown's wife, Faith, is not as innocent as her pink ribbons might indicate. Faith represents Young Goodman Brown Puritan faith. Before going on his journey Mr. Brown says, "Well, she's a blessed angel on earth; and after this one night I'll cling to her skirts and follow her to heaven" (Hawthorne 1). After his journey is over, he will be good and cling to his faith. He will not be weak and fall to temptations. When Young Goodman Brown doubts himself, he looks back to Faith. Moments before going into the forest and embarking on his journey he, "… looked back and saw the head of Faith still peeping after him with a melancholy air, in spite of her pink ribbons" (Hawthorne 1).
