Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet is one of the most well-known tragedies in English literature. It tells the story of two star-crossed lovers from feuding families who meet, fall in love, and within a week suffer untimely deaths. The rivalry between their families, the Capulets and Montagues, is what ultimately causes the demise of Romeo and Juliet. They have to hide their love and marriage in fear of being caught and punished. This leads to Capulet forcing Juliet to marry Paris, not knowing that she is already wedded. Their hatred also provokes many scuffles between the servants and younger generations and builds up until the fight between Tybalt and Mercutio causes Romeo’s banishment.
