Romeo & Juliet Most people know Shakespeare for his famous play, Romeo and Juliet in which is a tragic story about two decedents from ongoing feuding noble families. In this play, the two lovers (Romeo and Juliet) meet causing more disturbance between the two families which lead to Romeo and Juliet’s tragic death. Their deaths are caused by three main characters, Tybalt, Mercutio, and Friar Lawrence by inducing more disruption than they could handle. To start off, Tybalt (Juliet’s cousin) is one of the main instigators to the tragic death because he is the first to start a feud with Romeo. In act 1, scene 5, lines 50-60, Tybalt is at the party where Romeo first meets Juliet when he …show more content…
Instead of allowing his cousin to talk to whoever she wants Tybalt however will not allow her to talk to their enemy family (a Montague). Besides being the first to notice the romantic couple Tybalt is also the most violent and now wants Romeo dead. Also, in act 2, scene 4, lines 7-9 Benvolio (Romeo’s cousin) says, “Tybalt the kinsman to old Capulet, hath sent a letter to his father’s house.” In this letter Tybalt shares the Montagues that he wants to dual against Romeo. This now shows that Tybalt will not let the romantic lovers get off his mind and that even in act 2 he still wants to kill Romeo. Tybalt is only leading to Romeo’s death as well as trying to be the one to kill him. Unfortunately for Tybalt he does not kill Romeo but, at the dual Tybalt kills Mercutio (Romeo’s best friend) which sets off Romeo causing him to kill Tybalt. Romeo now has to run off into another town. This loses his communication with his priest, who sent him a letter to say they were faking Juliet’s death in order to protect him. When he finds out she is ‘dead’ he loses all faith in life and kills …show more content…
During the party, act 1 scene 4, Mercutio tries to get Romeo to go dance on the party floor. During this time Romeo spots Juliet, only now leading the whole story onward. If Mercutio didn’t get Romeo to go dance and meet Juliet they would have never been married and would have never died. Although Mercutio managed to play another big art in act 3 scene 1 lines 60-65 is when Mercutio gets killed. Since Romeo is very loyal to his best friend Mercutio he now fights back against Tybalt an ends up killing him. Which now again leads Romeo to leave the city to only come back to find Juliet ‘dead’ so in depression he kills himself, when Juliet wakes up she is also extremely sad and find no point in life and kills herself. Mercutio plays the biggest part of the Romeo and Juliet tragedy because if it wasn’t for him Romeo and Juliet would have not met and there wouldn’t have been a Romeo and
First, Romeo’s kind and calm personalities act as an advantage for many of the possible problems he could have had, such as Capulet hatred towards him and his increase in violence. After Romeo was depressed because he liked Rosaline and she didn’t like him back, his cousin Benvolio helped Romeo sneak into a Capulet party so he could get over Rosaline and pick another woman that he might want. As Romeo was describing how Juliet looked to his cousin, Tybalt, Capulet’s nephew, figured out that Romeo was at the party by his voice. He then confronted Capulet and asked him if he could kill him, but surprisingly Capulet lets him stay at the party and calls Romeo a gentleman and a good man (Shakespeare Act 1 Scene 1 Line 64). Capulet could have captured him or even killed him, but he did not. Capulet stated that Romeo is a well-governed youth and that Romeo is a good man, which shows that Romeo isn’t a person who would cause a commotion and that he causes no threat to the Capulet family. Later on, as Mercutio, the prince's kinsman, is arguing and fighting with Tybalt about him being one of his villain Romeo’s friends, Romeo comes in and says, “Tybalt, the reason I have to love thee doth much excuse the appertaining rage to such greeting. Villain am I none. Therefore farewell. I see thou knowest me not” (Shakespeare Act 3 Scene 1 Line 58). As Tybalt wants to fight Romeo and bring in violence,
In addition to Juliet’s parents, Tybalt, Juliet’s cousin, instigated a fight between himself and Romeo. This is what caused Romeo to be banished from Verona to Mantua. This is what started Juliet wanting to leave Verona to be with Romeo in Mantua. This started Romeo not finding out about Juliet faking her death and then awakening to go be with Romeo. Tybalt is an instigator, troublemaker, and fighter, and a reader may label him as unforgiving. If he would have found out about Romeo and Juliet he might have disagreed with both of them. If one were to wondered when Romeo and Tybalt fought, one would find it in Act three Scene one. In lines sixty-nine through seventy-three, Romeo confesses to Tybalt that they are in fact related and Romeo is married to Juliet. Tybalt did not even catch on to what Romeo was talking about. Tybalt comes off as arrogant. In some ways Romeo and Tybalt are very
Act 3 Scene 1 lines 132-133, Benvolio says to Romeo, “Romeo, away, be gone! / The citizens are up, and Tybalt slain.” This in after Romeo has killed Tybalt for revenge. Romeo knows beforehand that he shouldn’t kill Tybalt because Tybalt is Juliet’s cousin, but he goes against his moral instinct truculently. Killing Juliet’s cousin could have ended Romeo’s relationship with her forever, but he was luckily
In the beginning of the story, the Montagues and Capulets break out fighting in the middle of the street and they are told to stop their fighting or else they will be banished. Juliet is a Capulet, and her father is hosting a party. Romeo longing for his love Rosaline decides to crash the party. When Romeo meets Juliet, he instantly falls in love. But almost instantaneously Tybalt recognizes Romeo’s voice. “This, by his voice, should be a Montague. Fetch me my rapier, boy. What! Dares the slave. Come hither, covered with an antic face, To fleer and scorn our solemnity? Now, by the stock and honor of my kin. To strike him dead I hold it not a sin.” (1.5.53-58) From this moment on, Tybalt is out for Romeo.
As the fight is getting more and more intense, Romeo, Mercutio’s best friend, intervenes in the fight. He steps in between both Tybalt and Mercutio, and while he is in the way, Mercutio gets stabbed by Tybalt. The moment Mercutio gets stabbed, he becomes furious with Romeo for getting in his way of the fight. Even though Romeo was trying to help Mercutio stay out of trouble, he was the only reason that Mercutio got stabbed. His last few words to his beloved best friend, Romeo, was, “A plague o’ both of your households!” (Act III, Sc. 1). This shows foreshadowing of the two lover’s fatal end because he cursed the two household to have a horrible life. Also, a “plague” of sadness will indeed strike the two households when Romeo and Juliet take their
Tybalt’s monstrous behaviour in Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet fuels the feuding families’ hate and consequently results in the deaths of the doomed lovers. His violent dispositions, fierce devotion to the Capulets and irrational behaviour all contribute to the final fatalities of the hero and heroine. Tybalt's violence leads to chaos in between the two bickering families. Tybalt is to blame for their deaths as his violent tendencies had chain reactions. Tybalt's hatred for the Montagues is strong as he feels like they are a threat to the Capulets.
He is a nephew to Lord Capulet and a cousin to Juliet. He does not talk many lines, but he influences the entire course of the play even though he has a minor role. Throughout the play, he demonstrates his angry, resentful, and commanding nature. On the first day, he spots Romeo at the Capulet party and is outraged by this, but his Uncle, Capulet, refuses to let him deal with Romeo, angering him even more, so he sets out on a revenge mission, that is how he eventually dies in the end, because he picks a fight with Romeo when Romeo doesn’t want to, Mercutio steps in, he kills Mercutio, and Romeo then goes on and kills him as I explained earlier on in the essay. You can sense in the play that Tybalt is powered by the hate his family have for the Montague’s. Tybalt would do anything to start a fight with them because of the rivalry. He is willing to put his life on
One reason Tybalt is liable for his own death is because of his anger issues. One way that he shows this is when he says “Romeo, the hate I bear thee can afford no better term than this: thou art a villain.” (3.1. 59-60). Essentially Romeo explains to Tybalt that he has no reason for them to fight because he loves and cherishes the Capulet name more than he knew, and has never done anything to harm or injure him. Tybalt has no idea that his cousin, Juliet, and Romeo are now married which would make them related as well, he thinks that hating Romeo is a good enough reason for them to dual. As a result of Tybalt getting angry and offended at everything, he is the reason for his
He was indeed a part of the Capulet household and family, making him Juliet's cousin. In the beginning of Act 3 Mercutio and Tybalt are caught dueling with swords. Romeo attempts to depart the fight by holding Mercutio, Romeo’s close friend, back. This only resulted in the demise of Mercutio and infuriation of Romeo. After this tragedy occurred Romeo jousted and killed Tybalt. “Tybalt, here slain, whom Romeo’s hand did slay, Romeo, that spoke him fair, bid him bethink How nice the quarrel was, and urged withal Your high displeasure.” (Shakespeare 429). It was then that it penetrated his mind that he just dispatched his one and only love, Juliet’s kinsmen. Resulting from this the Prince gave Romeo strict consequences, because he was at the last straw. Romeo was banished from Verona, therefore was to live in Mantua, was to be fined and soon killed. These all caused issues between Romeo and Juliet’s marriage. Distance is known to be a problem in a relationship. Juliet comprehended this and devised a plan with the Friar. Romeo was the origin of the trouble in this scene and the plan with Juliet. Soon after Juliet put her plan in place and drank a death-trance potion, Romeo visited an apothecary and purchased an illegal potion, that would kill himself. “Such mortal drugs I have; but Mantua’s law Is death to any he that utters them.” (Shakespeare 469). He did so because he got the
Tybalt is responsible for the death of Romeo and Juliet. It all started when Tybalt wanted to kill Romeo when he innocently showed up at the party. When Tybalt discovered Romeo was attending the party he declared to Lord Capulet, “It fit’s when such a villain is guest. I’ll not endure him” (1.5.82-83). Tybalt's constant anger and urge to murder Romeo would lead to the banishment of Romeo and the separation of Romeo and Juliet. Following this, Tybalt challenges Romeo to a fight, even after the Price announces his new no fighting laws. After insulting Romeo, Tybalt demands him to “turn and draw” (3.1.70). If Tybalt wouldn’t have challenged Romeo to a fight, Romeo wouldn’t have been banished and Romeo and Juliet could have been happily married. In
First off is Tybalt, a member of the Capulets, the one that killed Mercutio and that Romeo killed. Mercutio was the one that fought Tybalt when Romeo was getting married, when Romeo came, Tybalt tried to kill him but killed Mercutio instead. His serious hate for the Montagues let alone Romeo was how he got into fighting Romeo and becoming a shish kabob by Romeo’s sword. The one thing that was stupid for Tybalt was that after he killed Mercutio, he ran away and came back
Because the family feud coerced Tybalt to start a fight with Romeo, it is most responsible for the deaths of Romeo and Juliet. Since, Tybalt hated Romeo, he started a fight with Romeo, as a result of this fight; Tybalt was killed and Romeo was banished. The banishment of Romeo caused him to be uniformed of Friar Laurence’s plan, which led to Romeo committing suicide by poison. As Tybalt prepares to fight Romeo he states, “Romeo, the love I bear thee can afford No better term than this: thou art a villain. ”(3.1.55-56).
In the play, Romeo fights and kills Tybalt after he killed his best friend, Mercutio. First Tybalt wanted to fight Romeo, but Romeo knew that Tybalt is Juliet’s cousin, and he didn’t want to fight him. Mercutio decided to fight Tybalt instead, and Tybalt ended up killing Mercutio. Then Romeo being angered by this, fights and kills Tybalt. Seeing that Romeo killed Tybalt Prince Escalus banished Romeo from Verona.
