Through all of the pop music and big hair there was a growing epidemic of drug usage in the United States. To stop this Ronald Reagan began the War On Drugs, but since he has left office the war has been brought to a stand still. The War On Drugs that Ronald Reagan pursued in the 1980s has been put on the back burner, the amount of drugs and people using them has not decreased, all the while there has not been any new developments to try and prevent drug usage to further build up the arsenal against the War on Drugs.
No Drugs, No Problems! That has been the philosophy of the war on drugs, which is a nice idea except when not carried out properly backfires. The idea was to get rid of the supply, but they did not first lower the demand. In economics the supply and demand counterbalance each other; while supply decreases, then demands and price increase and vice versa. When they took away the drugs without reducing the demand and the price skyrocketed, but it didn’t do anything to lower sales of drugs. This is associated as a result of drugs, but is more so influenced by the illegalization of them. If a problem arises from a gang or cartel they don’t have a proper system to use to deal with it. Instead they resort to violence, which in turn just creates more violence. “According to some estimates, the homicide rate in the US is 25-75 % higher because of the War on Drugs,”(Kurzgesagt). The war has actually increased the homicide rate, doing the opposite of the intentions because of the laws against drugs. From 2007-2014 it is estimated that 164,000 have been murdered in Mexico, that is more than the deaths in Afghanistan and Iraq in the same time frame. If we had a better system to deal with the drugs rather than start the war against it, there would be less violent crime related to
