The root word of deviance is deviant. A deviant is someone who departs from the usual or accepted standards, in social or sexual behavior. My journey into deviance was an intriguing experience. Its shocking how peoples perspective of you can change so quickly. One can easily be branded as an outcast for doing something out of the ordinary. My first act of deviance involved a McDonald’s employee. She was exceptionally nice, greeted me with a smile, and gave me the best customer service I have had there in a while. I approached the counter as normally as I possibly could. She asked “How are you today sir? May I take your order?” I opened my mouth slowly to build the suspense. I began to rap my order to her. One line I said was “I’d like a McDouble stacked nice and high with a side of fries and don’t forget the apple pies!” I dragged this out for another minute or two. I had my friends behind me to act as a crowd amazed by my rhymes, to further boost the deviance. The look she held on her face was priceless. She looked as if she wanted to burst out in laughter. I felt bad for choosing her to be my victim, but in the process I made her day a bit better. I explained my purpose so there were no hard feelings. It depends solely on the person and their upbringing. Everyone takes things differently, humor also plays a role in acts of deviance. If a person has a nice sense of humor, a deviance act can come off as comical or entertaining, take the McDonald’s employee for example. She could have easily blown me off and went on to the next customer, but since she had a good taste in humor, the deviant act wasn’t really deviant to her. She found humor within the act, while someone else may have responded differently. You can tell a great deal about a person’s character by finding out what kind of humor they are
