Giant Sperm Whale Encounter at ROV Hercules
Scientists working with the Nautilus Exploration Program (http://www.oceanexplorationtrust.org/#!nautilus-exploration-program/cdx2) in the Gulf of Mexico had an exciting adventure when they had a giant sperm whale encounter this week that brought excitement to the crew, as well as nature fans all over the world when the video went viral on Facebook and social media venues.
The crew were able to record on their live webcam stream for everyone to enjoy as it glided around inspecting the remotely operated vehicle (ROV) Hercules (http://www.nautiluslive.org/tech/rov-hercules) nearly 2,000 feet below the ocean off the coast of Louisiana in the Gulf of Mexico.
Sperm Whale Encounter Rare, Exciting
Part of the reason the sperm whale encounter is so much of an adventure, is due to the fact that sperm whales are on the endangered species list and considered vulnerable according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (www.iucn.org). In addition, the sperm whale is rarely seen to travel in the waters off the Louisiana shore.

On Saturday May 20th a confused Humpback whale gets stuck in the Ventura Harbor in California. The Coast Guard attempted to guide the Whale in various ways. The First way was to lure it with food but it did not take the bait. The next way was to emit sounds in the ocean to also lure it out but again it did not. Officials said they were worried about all the boats in the harbor being damaged because of the whale.
