A few years ago I decide to go watch T.V. as I normally do in the morning. That’s when I saw that another set of innocent lives have been taken from not wearing seatbelts. What really got my attention was those innocent lives were from Union, Missouri and I knew two out of the five of them, three out of the five died. Their names were Jim Curran, Isaac Clark, Lucas Shulze, Cole Weddle, and Derek King. I knew Isaac and Jim; Isaac had his seatbelt on and survived but was in critical condition but Jim did not make it, he suffered serious injuries in the wreck and did not have his seatbelt on. This made me realize that it’s a problem everywhere with people not wearing their seatbelts. The world needs to crack down on everyone to wear their …show more content…
He also required a breathing tube that kept him from resuming his duties as governor for several weeks. (Why You Should Buckle Up) This happened to an adult who is looked up upon by kids and if he doesn’t set a good example kids will follow in his footsteps and not wear a seatbelt. From 2008 to 2012, 1,609 children ages eight to 14 died while traveling in passenger vehicles. A full 80 percent of them were unrestrained at the time of their death. This is happening anywhere people have cars even in Union itself. In the past few years there has been a few teenagers who have died from not wearing their seatbelt and they had all attended Union High School. Today, seatbelts are an accepted part of routine vehicle operation for millions of drivers and passengers. But the modern three-point automotive seatbelt has only been around since 1959 - and it’s saved thousands of lives since it’s introduction.(seatbelts and car safety) Initially people may find seatbelts uncomfortable, confining or inconvenient simply because they’re not used to wearing them. Those people who have made buckling up a habit can testify that once their use does become a habit, there is no discomfort or inconvenience. It can’t be overemphasized that the seriou discomfort and inconvenience of motor vehicle crash injury in no way compares to the imaginary discomfort or the inconvenience you may think you
There are many people who do not understand the importance of seat belts for safety. They do not wear their seat belts even though they know the mortality statistics. Most of them think that seat belts do not help when an accident occurs. We have all made the excuse that the seat belt is uncomfortable. Driving is a dangerous duty that should always be practiced with more caution and care. Some people think that not wearing a seatbelt is rebellious. Other people think that they will never get into accident. Some of the consequences of not wearing a seat belt is that you could die, you can get injured and many more. So far, the only way to avoid these consequences from happening is to wear a seatbelt.
49 States in the USA have issued mandatory seat belt laws to promote safe habits and to protect the people. With this law in place, many lives have been saved as people were forced to wear seat belts to properly
According to NHTSA, 13,941 lives were saved by seat belts in 2015 while an additional 2,814 could have been saved if properly restrained (2017). One impact of seat belt usage is reducing the risk serious or fatal injuries by about half. The CDC reported in 2009, 53% of occupants killed in crashes in the U.S. were not wearing seat belts (2014). According to data collected in 2008 by NHTSA, seat belts have saved an estimated 225,000 lives (2009). The benefit of wearing a seat belt can help increase chances of surviving a crash with little or no
“The Fraud of Seat-Belt Laws” by William J. Holdorf is more focused on seat-belt laws than seat belts themselves. Holdorf discusses that the seat-belts laws are more concerned with generating money than actually protecting citizens (1). Holdorf writes, “Once seatbelt laws were passed in any form, supporters returned each legislative session to lobby for amendments, such as including all occupants, increasing fines, eliminating exemptions, and changing to primary enforcement, so that the police could stop a motorist merely under suspicion of not using a seat belt” (1). The argument here against seat belts, specifically the laws pertaining to them, is that police can pull anyone over with the intent to fine them for not wearing their seatbelt. Horford continues that seat belt laws are a “loss of freedom” and that the expenses to implement the law are putting a burden on society and “infringe a person’s rights as guaranteed in the Fourth, Fifth, and the Ninth Amendments” (2). The debt on society is an understandable argument but the idea of infringing on someone’s rights does not make sense, at least relating to this context. It does not make sense for someone to prefer a life of chronic pain from severe injuries or even death of themselves or a family member than simply a few bruises or even get away from a crash perfectly clean. How can someone not want to protect
The law should require people to wear seat belts because it prevents people from getting injured or killed in car accidents. Seat belts dramatically reduce the risk of death and serious injuries every day. 53% of the people who have died in car accidents were not wearing a seat belt. Many people that
For the people who use the excuse that "They are just going around the corner" should realize that 80% of traffic fatalities occur within a 25-mile radius of your home and at a speed of 40 miles an hour. Buckling up to drive around the block is probably the best time to do so. Everyone knows that car crashes can cause death; yet because people do not buckle up all the time thousands of people still die in traffic crashes yearly. Seatbelts can save your life in a crash and can reduce your risk of a serious injury. Seat belts keep drivers and passengers from being ejected through windows or doors. This is important because your chances of being killed are five times greater if you are thrown from the vehicle. Thousands of people who die in car crashes each year might still be alive today if they had only been wearing their seat belts.
Automobiles have been around for over a century. They help people get around town as technology improves over the years. Now with better fuel economy, we are excited to be driving around for many miles over the road. Although many of our cars have change overtime, the one thing that has never change is the seat belt that’s near our car doors. Whenever you get in any car on the road, its important that we depend on people to wear seat belts. Seat Belts are the ones we must wear before we head out on our cars. Its protect drivers from injuries sustain from crashes. Seat Belt inspire many states laws in America, but sometimes not all seat belt laws are mandatory. Only one state in the United States didn’t have any seat belts laws at all with the exception of the booster seat law. Anytime we get in our car, we always depend on seat belts to protect drivers from serious injuries or
Seat belts worn correctly can reduce the chances of death in a collision by 47% and the chances of serious injury by 52% (Stewart et al., 1997). All new vehicles sold in Canada today are equipped with three-point seat belts in all positions. Many vehicles are also equipped with seat belt pretensioners,
A recent multi-vehicle accident in Rutherford County is a reminder of the importance of using seatbelts. A 27-year-old woman was driving eastbound on State Route 840 West when her vehicle ran off the road. She overcorrected and crossed into oncoming traffic, colliding head-on with another vehicle. The 27-year-old was ejected from the vehicle and hit by a third vehicle. Both the 27-year-old woman and the driver of the second vehicle died from injuries sustained in the crash. Neither was wearing a seat belt, which, according to Tennessee Highway Patrol, would have made a difference in the crash.
“Lap/shoulder belts can be misused,” said a spokeswomen for the NHTSA, “that can result in serious neck injury and perhaps abdominal injury…” (Johnson). Since the year 2000, many finalized studies from International Inc. and Thomas Inc. agree with the NHTSA’s investigations, stating seatbelts on school buses are more dangerous than beneficial. International Inc. and Thomas Inc. are both leading school bus manufacturing companies that have had heated debates on the installation of seatbelts from the assembly line.
Something that irritates me is when people, who obviously know right from wrong, don’t use their seatbelts. There’s a reason why not wearing a seatbelt is illegal and enforced in most states. The leading cause of death among is teens is vehicle accidents. In 2012 it was reported that in half of the deaths, the person was no not wearing any type or restraint or seatbelt. Meaning 33,000 people died and another 2.2 million were injured. This has a consequence and as a teenager myself, it makes me sad to think that kids, just like me, had their life cut short. Many of them could’ve went to college, pursue a career, become the world’s future doctors, businessmen, and leaders. Most people don’t know what they’re risking when they don’t buckle up. In addition to the tragedy
Seatbelts save lives, it’s as simple as that. If you don’t wear your seatbelt and you get in a car accident, you could and probably will be thrown from the vehicle.
Even with this car accidents are still the ninth leading cause of death among people of ages 15 to 29. “The federal government mandated the presence of seatbelts in the 1960’s, Anti-lock brake systems came in the 1970’s. In the 80’s and the 90’s more strict laws about drunk driving and seat belt used came along”. (HIS.org).
Often, the improper use of the car seat is a result of parental error when strapping the child in, which results in errors such as the straps being too slack or too tight, and the buckle of the harness not being completely latched. Thus, the goal of this design is to prevent this parental error while strapping children into their child restraint
Seat belts although they are the most effective safety device on cars must be made safer. Out of all people who died in car accidents, 63% of those were not wearing seat belts (seatbelts). This goes to show you the effectiveness of seat belt. Therefore automotive manufactures must mandate the installation of 5-point seatbelt on all cars. In all major race car organization such as NASCAR (National Association Stock Car Automotive Racing) they require these 5-point seat belt. Which is nothing more than a seatbelt that is buckled in 5 spots rather that the conventional 3.
