As I hear Sanger Rainsford try to coax Ivan, I decide to come down the steps. Ivan clicked his heels together and saluted me, as he should. I extend my hand to Sanger, and say,”It is a very great pleasure and honor to welcome Mr. Sanger Rainsford, the celebrated hunter, to my home.” Sanger took my hand immediately, as he should. “I’ve read your book about hunting snow leopards in Tibet, you see,” I explained. “I am General Zaroff.” Rainsford studies me as I study him. I fill with giddy. I might actually get a challenge from this specimen. I turn to Ivan and sign for him to leave. He puts his pistol away, saluted me, and left. “Ivan is an incredibly strong fellow, but he has the misfortune to be deaf and dumb. A simple fellow, but,
In the beginning of Chapter XII of Tolstoy’s story, Ivan starts to painfully scream loudly for three consecutive days, during which time Ivan realizes that his doubts are still unsolved. During this moment, Ivan realizes that moving up in social esteem has not led to joy, fulfillment, and life, but to misery, emptiness, and death instead. Blinded by the values of high society, he
"The general was playing with him! The general was saving him for another day's sport! The Cossack was the cat; he was the mouse. Then it was that Rainsford knew the full meaning of terror." Rainsford comes to seek vengeance from the general making a toy of him by attempting to cause insanity due to the loss of nerve. "I will not lose my nerve. I will not." is the type of mental toughness Rainsford shows during Zaroff's tortures. "The general sucked in his breath and smiled. "I congratulate you," he said. "You have won the game."" The generals admit of defeat is not enough for Rainsford, thus Rainsford takes the situation to a brutal place and kills the General; "The general made one of his deepest bows. "I see," he said, "Splendid! One of us is to furnish a repast for the hounds.
Rainsford is not a hero due to his egocentric attitude and hypocritical behavior. After Rainsford hears the hounds and sees Ivan and General Zaroff approaching, he then creates a trap to kill General Zaroff. When Rainsford hears the footsteps stop, he looks back at the trap and “[sees] in the shallow valley that General Zaroff was still on his feet. But Ivan was not. The knife, driven by the recoil of the springing tree, had not wholly failed” (Conell 14). This quote proves that Rainsford does not obtain the qualities of an altruistic and civil being. This is due to Rainsford wanting to kill General Zaroff for his own survival. Furthermore, once Rainsford accidentally kills Ivan, he swims away in refuge from General Zaroff.
The novel In search of April Raintree by Beatrice Culleton Mosioner allows non-Metis people an idea as to what it was like to grow up being metis as well as the story of two sisters. The novel is told by April Raintree the eldest daughter of Henry and Alice Raintree. Her father is described as being of mixed blood a little of this and a little of that and her mother Alice was part Irish and part Ojibway. April describes herself to take on her mother’s features more than that of her father . (Like her I had pale skin, not that it made any difference when we were living as a family.) (p.1)
On a moonless Caribbean night, Sanger Rainsford was sailing with fellow hunter, Whitney. After Whitney had gone to bed, Rainsford was smoking his pipe in the silent night when he suddenly heard three gunshots.

“How should life be lived?” This is a question that people repeatedly ask themselves during their life. Outside influences, such as the media, celebrities, and peer pressure force people to search for the answer to this question. As a result, many books have been written about how life should be lived, one of these being The Death of Ivan Ilych. In this novella, Leo Tolstoy tells the reader how to live a good life by describing the life and death of someone who lived “the simplest, the most ordinary, and the most awful” kind of life (95). Tolstoy achieves his purpose by using different figures of speech; specifically, he uses irony to demonstrate how Ivan, the main character, lived a bad life, personification to show why he lived a bad life, and rhetorical questions to explain how life should be lived.
Ivan is a middle class man from the 19th century who lived in Russia. He was a lawyer and a bureaucrat. He was married to Praskovya. The vignette described Ivan as a capable, cheerful, good-natured and social man. He was attracted to others who were in higher positions and likes their politeness, speech, and manners. Although he was given the position as examining magistrate and even then, he did not abuse his powers. In the beginning of the vignette, Ivan wanted to be an independent man with the luxuries of the rich. However, after the accident, he came to understand the sorrow of others.
I nod once, a greeting and a confirmation as to what I had done. The anger in Robert’s eyes just moments before is replaced with
This concludes that people are not always who others may think they are. As in for Peter Ivanovich he is one of the worst traders a person could have as a friend. His last name Ivanovich stands for Ivan’s son. That is why maybe he was relieved when Ivan Ilych dies because he is truly tired of living under his shadow. Peter was a false person because when his best friend dies he feels like more doors open. That is why people might say don’t judge a book
As Amaleh left the keep, Brakan walked in front of the throne, “why" he said looking at Loken who smirked, “why did you agree to meet with Hunter?”

Rainsford gripped the knife so tight, his knuckles became white. He pulled the knife up, slitting Ivan's throat. Rainsford watched the dead man fall to the ground, blood spilling from his neck. Rainsford stared at the blood on his hands. He liked this feeling... There was something about it that intrigued him. He knew the action was opprobrious; he knew it was shameful. However, something deep inside of him made him want to continue this.
He forced a smile and we shook hands. He thanked me again and left. I heard the door to the stairwell open and close and sat back down. I ran a hand through my hair and thought another fuckin' life shattered, another dream ended. In another life I think I’d rather be a paramedic or something, someone who saves lives instead of destroying them.
Both men shook hands, Robert turned away from the desk,“Wyatt follow me, I show you to your locker so you can change. The briefing started already.”
