Satan As An Epic Hero In Milton's Paradise Lost

Satisfactory Essays

In Paradise Lost, Satan embodies qualities that makes him up to be a anti-hero more so than an epic hero. To provide a distinction between the two, a epic hero is someone who would be defined as a character in a epic poem who is noble, has courage and is praised for their achievements for the greater good. An anti-hero would be someone who lacks the attributes of a hero that could be seen similar to a tragic hero. When we hear the word hero, we might think of Superman or The Hulk, characters who does good for the society. Satan on the other hand is way far from this. He encompasses characteristics of a leader to some extent but the amount is only at the tip of an iceberg. Realistically however, he is viewed as the enemy of God and Man to which he will always be seen in a negative light.

The character of Satan is very complex and is very difficult be understood by just only one way, he is made up by different layers which each one holds a different attribute that makes up what he is. Having numerous of personalities while also contradicting himself, Satan can be seen as a hero and a villain, rebelling against oppression and a ruler, preaches about breaking free but happens to only focus on his own self-interests. It seems though as if Milton is intentionally depicting several different and Satans that has no relation to each other..

Milton’s Satan contains elements of the hero in what looks to be a tragic classic. Satan’s grievous flaw would be him lacking self-knowledge
