Abstract
Childhood onset schizophrenia is a chronic disabling brain disorder. Schizophrenia was once thought as, as a disorder that only affect teens and adults. It wasn?t unstill recently that doctors and researchers discovered that schizophrenia can affect children under the age of 13. Children have the same sign and symptoms of schizophrenia as adults. The same medications used to treat the symptoms of the disorder is used both in adults and children. Schizophrenia is a complex disorder. It is hard to diagnose the disorder because many of the symptoms are similar to the symptoms of other disorders. It is extremely difficult to diagnose a child with schizophrenia. Children have to go through a long process to exhaust out all other possibilities and disorders before the doctor comes to a conclusion that they have schizophrenia. In this I will discuss the possible causes of the disorder, prevalence, differentiating of the disorder, developmental and cultural considerations, assessment process, treatment considerations and the outlook of the disorder.

Martin is a 21 year-old college student and he had psychotic symptoms, specifically delusions and hallucinations over the past few weeks. Martin’s family and friends have overheard him whispering in an agitated voice. Recently, Martin refused to use his cell phone, claiming that if he uses it, a deadly chip implanted in his brain by evil aliens will activate. At the same time, he has negative symptoms, such as a lack of motivation, he has stopped attending
Majority of cases begin in adolescence and adulthood. The peak age range would be eighteen to thirty year olds. As far as we know it is very rare for a child to have schizophrenia. The age for schizophrenia to appear differs by gender. Women tend to be diagnosed in between twenty and twenty-four. There is a second rise in numbers for women. The second rise begins after the age of forty. Men tend to get it in their twenties. After the age of thirty-five the number of men who develop schizophrenia tends to drop, thus males more likely to have early onset compared to women. “Gender differences may be related to women having more mood disorder and anxiety diagnosis leading to milder forms of schizophrenia going undiagnosed,” (Butcher, 2014). Gender can play a big role when diagnosing schizophrenia.

What is Schizophrenia? Schizophrenia is a mental disorder where the person suffering it is afflicted by numerous different symptoms, which primarily include vivid hallucinations and paranoia. People who suffer it tend to have abnormal perceptions of the world around them, and as mentioned above they tend to have hallucinations that appear very real to them, sometimes to the point where they are unaware that they are hallucinating. (John Nash, Professor who was notable for having Schizophrenia, is a good example of someone who was largely unaware that they were hallucinating). Conditions such as the ones mentioned above can be very disorienting and confusing or scary, to the people suffering them,

Individuals with schizophrenia can still be before or after those ages but is more unlikely after the age of 45. Childhood diagnosis of schizophrenia has become more and more advanced recently. Early onset and diagnoses during the teen years is very difficult. To diagnose a teen is difficult due to the overlap in behavior between schizophrenia and regular teenage behavior. Teens that are diagnosed usually show the first symptoms of change of friends, a drop in grades, sleep problems, and irritability. These symptoms are exactly identical to how regular teens act, causing the problem with the diagnosis of schizophrenia. Usually the first of the symptoms to occur are the hallucinations and delusions. But, many other factors can help diagnose youth that have schizophrenia. Some factors that can “predict schizophrenia in up to 80 percent of youth who are at high risk of developing the illness.” (NIH)

“Schizophrenia is a psychotic disorder marked by severely impaired thinking, emotions, and behaviors” (Gulli, 2002). In 1908, a Swiss doctor named Eugen Bleuler first viewed and described the individualities of Schizophrenia. Schizophrenia comes from a pair of Greek words meaning “split mind”. If a person with Schizophrenia is left untreated they will begin to become a total recluse and will not be able to fulfill certain needs, such as personal hygiene (Gulli, 2002). According to the powerpoint used in class, schizophrenia has a prevalence rate of anywhere from 0.3%-0.7%.
