Schizophrenia, a disorder that is in the brain that affects a person's actions, thoughts, and how they view things. People with schizophrenia often see things that are not actually happening, hear things that no one said, or even think something about someone that's not true and believe that it's actually real. People with this illness, “May see or hear things that don't exist, speak in strange or confusing ways, believe that others are trying to harm them, or feel like they are being constantly watched” (“Schizophrenia” 1). In the story, “The Hitchhiker” a boy named Jacob is facing many of these symptoms. Jacob seems to have the abnormal behavior that is triggered by schizophrenia, causing him to do acts of violence, and have hallucinations. …show more content…
He will see things that aren't there and think things that was never said. Primarily, “Hallucinations are sounds or other sensations experienced as real when they exist only in a person's mind” (“Schizophrenia” 2). Jacob often sees something that isn't there. This will cause him to have thoughts that may not be good on something that isn't real. It may trigger him to have many different emotions. To add on, When Jacob claims he saw blood on the hitchhikers arm he got very scared and worried. But it wasn't actually blood. Then when the hitchhiker mouths something to him, he misunderstood it as, “You're dead” (Horowitz 231). Jacob was hallucinating and thought he said one thing when he actually mouthed completely different. Clearly, Jacob has been having hallucinations causing his unusual
In the movie A Beautiful Mind, which primarily takes place in the 1950s, John Nash exhibits signs of schizophrenia. He shows both positive and negative signs of the disorder. However, the movie does not portray all symptoms of schizophrenia accurately. Throughout Nash’s life-long battle with his illness, his family is dramatically affected. Overall, the movie implements a positive stigma of the disorder. While John Nash’s journey with his illness is not an entirely accurate depiction, the movie gives a positive light and awareness to schizophrenia.
All in all, Jacob has schizophrenia because of hallucinations and he has the symptoms of paranoid schizophrenia. Jacob had visual and auditory hallucinations while in the car with the hitchhiker. He was also being paranoid thinking that the hitchhiker was going to kill them when really, he was just a nice guy. Jacob may have just been looking out for his family but he had no grip on

Jim Stevens left this poem up to interpretation. The title “Schizophrenia” sticks out because it is a mental disorder that affects how a person feels thinks and acts; thus, it leads the reader to believe this poem has a dark undertone. Each line gives a story of how a family deals with the issues of two people in a relationship. For instance, in the last line of the poem, "It was the House that suffered the most" (Stevens line 1), Stevens indicates the relationship was not a happy one and the house suffered for it. He sets up the image with this opening line and repeats it in the close of the poem. Throughout the poem the house transforms in to a person.
In the film, “Proof”, the main character Catherine goes through hardships after her father passes away. She can not be diagnosed with abnormal behavior because all 4 characteristics have to meet her actions. Only the maladaptive characteristic fit her actions. In order for one to be diagnosed with depression, five of the symptoms have to be present during the same two-week period and at least symptom one or two have to be involved. Also, all five letters A through E have to be present. Catherine can be diagnosed with major depression due to the criteria evident. Letter A through E were all present throughout the film for Catherine. The five symptoms involved were numbers one, two, three, six, and seven.
SCHIZOPHRENIA Schizophrenia, from the Greek word meaning “split mind”, is a mental disorder that causes complete fragmentation in the processes of the mind. Contrary to common belief, schizophrenia does not refer to a person with a split personality or multiple personalities, but rather to a condition which affects the person’s movement, language, and thinking skills. The question of whether schizophrenia is a disease or collection of socially learned actions is still a question in people’ mind. People who are suffering from schizophrenia think and act in their own the world and put themselves in a way that is totally different from the rest of society. In other words, they have lost in touch with the reality. Most schizophrenics accept
Insanity, then, is inordinate or irregular, or impaired action of the mind, of the instincts, sentiments, intellectual, or perceptive powers, depending upon and produced by an organic change in the brain.
“Schizophrenia,” written by Jim Stevens depicts how a person with mental illness behave. The author uses the house to symbolize the suffering that people around the sick person lives every day. In my personal experience I know that this disease is more serious than it seems to be. The affected person does not realize the harm is causing to others, and do not want to assume that is sick. Most of them refuse to receive treatment and they find people around them guilty for what is happening. Schizophrenia affects the way people interact and make them be extremely aggressive. The author portrays how the house was destroyed, and although he does not mention any specific character, the house is being destroyed with people inside of it. The author
Over the last few decades Schizophrenia has become embedded in mainstream vernacular as any behavior or emotional response that is out of touch with reality. However even with its popularity heightened through movies and headline news stories, schizophrenia is still one of the most enigmatic and least understood disorders of the brain. With current research focused on the role of neurobiology and functioning on a cellular level, investigative analysis has merited new innovations towards its source, however a single organic cause for the disorder still eludes scientists. Although the foundation of the affliction is still unknown, its effects are well documented and over the next few pages will show the changes in the brain as the disease

People with Schizophrenia “see or hear things that don’t exist, speak in strange or confusing ways, believe that others are trying to harm them, or feel like they’re being constantly watched” (“Schizophrenia” 1). It has been said that In the story “The Hitchhiker” by Anthony Horowitz, Jacob was a person with Schizophrenia because of all what he did in the car and how he acted towards the Hitchhiker. Jacob is being described with this disease because he killed the innocent hitchhiker thinking he was going to kill him when “the thunder rolled over us a second time and he said’ I’m going to kill you’ but he said it so quietly that only i heard” (Horowitz 233). Jacob thought that Mr.Rellik was after him, as every person with Schizophrenia thought of other people, but of course it was all Hallucinations and Delusions. Therefor, Jacob is being described as a person with
Hallucinations are sensory experiences that occur in the absence of a stimulus (Schizophrenia). Hallucinations can occur within any of the five senses (vision, smell, hearing, touching, or tasting). Auditory hallucinations are the most common type of hallucination in schizophrenia. The voices can be internal, seeming to come from within their own mind, or they can be external, in which case they can seem real as another person really speaking. Other types of hallucinations include seeing people or objects that are not there, smelling odors no one else can smell, and feeling like invisible finger touching them when one is
