Schizophrenia occurs in people from all cultures and from all walks of life. Schizophrenia is a chronic brain disorder that affects a small portion of the population in the world. When schizophrenia is active there are many different symptoms that can appear. Some symptoms can include delusions, hallucinations, trouble with thinking and concentration, and lack of motivation. When these symptoms are treated, most people with schizophrenia will improve over time with treatment. With the different studies we are able to see how schizophrenia works in different ways. The different ways being what is happening in the brain when a person has schizophrenia. Along with the different treatments from counseling to medication what works better.

First off I would like to tell you what exactly schizophrenia is. Schizophrenia is a brain disease, with concrete and specific symptoms due to physical and biochemical changes in the brain. This illness strikes young people in their prime age usually between 16 and 25. Schizophrenia is almost always treatable with medication. Contrary to what most think schizophrenia is not a "split personality", or caused by childhood trauma, bad parenting, or poverty, and not the result of any action or personal failure by the individual.(3)

Schizophrenia is a disorder of the brain that affects how a person feels, thinks, and how they observe the world around them. People with schizophrenia may seem like they have lost touch with reality (nimh.nih.gov, 2016). The media used was a movie called Canvas, which the mother has schizophrenia. She continues to worsen over time until she gets help. The movie expresses her hallucinations and delusions, and how they affect her and her family life.

Schizophrenia is a mental illness that inhibits a person’s ability to think clearly, manage their emotions, make their own decisions, and associate with others. It is a complicated, long term illness that affects one percent of Americans. Even though Schizophrenia can occur at any age, it is more common for men in their early twenties and early twenties to late thirties in women. It is possible to lead a happy, fulfilling life with Schizophrenia. (Nami 2016)

Schizophrenia is a mental disorder that is long-term and affects mostly adults. However, schizophrenia makes the body capable of displaying symptoms early on, possibly around adolescent years. The disorder makes it difficult to distinguish reality often causing a tainted perception of reality. Schizophrenia is defined by its symptoms of irritable feelings, hallucinations, isolation, lack of attention, and rapid thought process. While schizophrenia has no cure, it is treatable and has the ability to be tolerable. The long-term affect it has is the damaging of tissue in the brain, making it a lifetime struggle. Schizophrenia, it’s a long and confusing word. It can be quite a puzzling disorder to most as well. It has been called madness, hysteria, and even paranoia in the past but that is not the case today. However, Schizophrenia has many meanings, for there is not a specific definition. One of those meaning states it is a “chronic (long-lasting) brain disorder, affecting 1 in every 100 people worldwide” (Schizophrenia, 2013). What exactly is schizophrenia though? What are the symptoms of schizophrenia? What can I do treatment wise? These are common questions every person has when discovering and being diagnosed with a disorder. These questions are very significant and need to be answered.

There are many different specific kinds of schizophrenia, such as: paranoid schizophrenia, disorganized schizophrenia, or catatonic schizophrenia. Not only do elderly people get diagnosed with schizophrenia, teens can be diagnosed with the disorder as well. Before a patient is diagnosed with schizophrenia, the patient must meet the criteria of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM). Schizophrenia has no actual definition, but it describes a series of events and actions that a person ususally experiences. Schizophrenia is a psychosis. ( Smith, 1992, p.23-25 ) Psychosis describes a disorder where a group of mental disturbances happen. Schizophrenia is described to be a psychosis because it causes the victim to lose the ability to be in touch with society and its functions. For example, a person may begin to "see" animals that are not there, or may begin to characterize themselves as a famous person from the past such as Queen Elizabeth or King Edward. Schizophrenia is a well-known disease in the mental health field. Many people are familiar with how they can link the disease to other mental health issues. First and foremost finding out the correct diagnosis is the most important thing. Seeking help is the first step to maintaining stability with this disease. Living with schizophrenia could be very difficult and patients may have trouble coping. Healthcare workers have different ways to assist children and their families so that they are comfortably aware of the disease and expectations.

Schizophrenia is a severe mental illness that affects one to two percent of people worldwide. The disorder can develop as early as the age of five, though it is very rare at such an early age. (3)) Most men become ill between the ages of 16 and 25 whereas most women become ill between the ages of 25 and 30. Even though there are differences in the age of development between the sexes, men and women are equally at risk for schizophrenia. (4) There is of yet no definitive answer as to what causes the disorder. It is believed to be a combination of factors including genetic make-up, pre-natal viruses, and early brain damage which cause neurotransmitter problems in the brain. (3)

Schizophrenia is a mental disorder that affects many elements of the body and mind. This mental illness causes people to lose touch with reality Schizophrenia (2016). People with this illness suffer from hallucinations, paranoia, hearing voices, fear and persecutory delusion, which affects a person’s ability to think, feels, and behaves clearly. Most people with thinks illness are usually between the ages 16 and 30. Researchers have not found an exact cause of this disease but rather it is genetically passed down. Using drugs as well as the environment of the person has a lot to do with developing schizophrenia. There is no cure for this disease but it is very important to take an antipsychotic medication to help manage or decrease the unwanted behaviors of this mental illness. There are many other treatments people can use to minimize the illness. Some of these things include therapy; self-help groups, mental homes, and even exercise, which we will talk about later on in the paper. It is important in trying to manage a healthy life with schizophrenia that the person is being the healthiest person possible in order to overcome this illness or at least have some control over it, which is possible.

Approximately 22% of the American population suffers from some kind of mental disorder at any given time. (Passer and Smith, 2004) Schizophrenia is one of the most serious of these mental disorders, and there are many different kinds of treatment. While all mental disorders offer diagnosis and treatment challenges, few are more challenging than schizophrenia. It is both bizarre and puzzling, and has been described as “one of the most challenging disorders to treat effectively.” (Passer and Smith, 2004, 534)

Schizophrenia is a complex disorder of the brain, which is incurable but treatable to live a close to a normal life. There are different types of schizophrenia and they each have different symptoms and affect a person's life in different ways.

Approximately 1 percent of the world’s population is affected by schizophrenia. This illness does not discriminate. The symptoms usually start between ages 16 and 30. Once an individual reaches the age of 45, it is rare that schizophrenia manifests. Schizophrenia seldom occurs in children; however, awareness of childhood-onset schizophrenia is increasing (The National Institute of Mental Health, 2009). The symptoms tend to effect men more severely than women and those who suffer from schizophrenia are known to have a higher risk of substance abuse and suicide rates. Approximately 10 percent of the schizophrenia communities commit suicide. The most common addiction shared by these individual is (The National Institute of Mental Health, 2009).

Schizophrenia is a psychotic disorder that causes severe mental disturbances which disrupt ones thoughts, speech, and behavior. According to Paul Thompson, Associate Professor of Neurology, one percent of the world’s population suffers from this disorder. There is no one specific cause of schizophrenia, because it is caused by a combination of problems during development. It is a disorder which not only affects the patient, but their family and society as well. Schizophrenia can be a debilitating disorder, however, there are many treatments that can allow people who suffer from it to lead normal lives.
