It’s back to school time, which, among other things, means throwing together lunches five days a week that your kids will actually eat. Of course, ideally, these lunches not only have to taste good, but also provide real nutrition, to help your kids learn and grow.
Much research has been conducted on nutrition and its relationship to brain function, cognition, learning, and social behaviors. What science has shown time and again is that nutrition has a direct impact on the brain’s neurotransmitters, which are important structural components that play a big role in sending messages from the body to the brain. Many dietary components, commonly found in school-age children’s lunch, have been shown to have negative effects on this system.

Simply saute up some veggies like zucchini, corn and tomatoes with garlic, onions and maybe some fresh herbs. When done, scoop out onto a tortilla, cover with grated pepper jack cheese, place another tortilla on top and bake until cheese melts and tortilla is golden brown. Cut up into wedges.
6) Oven-Fried Chicken
Just like pasta, most kids I’ve ever known have loved fried chicken. The great thing about fried chicken is that it’s as delicious hot as it is cold, making it perfect for a school lunch. Of course, the not-so-great thing about fried chicken is that, well… it’s fried.
Instead of frying, simply cover your chicken in whole-wheat breadcrumbs and make until golden brown.
7) Whole-Wheat Brownies
Of course no school lunch is complete without a sweet treat for dessert. Here’s a healthy alternative to classic brownies.
This recipe uses whole-wheat flour instead of regular white flour, apple sauce (talk about moist!), and plenty of cocoa powder and semisweet chocolate. Your kids will love them.
Now don’t be surprised if your phone starts ringing off the hook with other parents asking you for these recipes that their kids are demanding! You’re apt to start a school lunch
Have you ever thought why you’re school lunch looks so disgusting? Have you ever thought what it’s actually made of? Or why doesn’t this look like the way I ate it at home? For some schools, lunches lack in many different categories from visual pleasure to taste. If the school lunches taste so bad, why don’t we try another way to make them better. For a school in Greeley, Colorado, they’re doing just that. They’re firing up their stoves and are ready to get the ball rolling. There are many reasons on why the school is taking such a huge step backwards. Like, the routine of buying reheated foods and serving them without hesitation. The schools budget cuts or the kitchen being too old and small for the process of preparing such foods. As well as, the list of ingredients that do not need to be in the foods and the risks of diseases/bacteria in the reheated lunches.
In numerous incidences around the country schools have reportedly denied their students school lunches because their lunch accounts are overdrawn in some cases by only a couple dollars (Green). Also, traditional packed lunches are under fire, in part, because some administrators who feel that the lunches are not nutritious enough for students have banned them (Eng, Hood). Because some school children are going hungry and have no other means of obtaining a meal during the school day, the school lunch program needs to take additional measures to ensure that the needs of all US students are being met.
Do you live in a school district that has questionable school lunches for kids? Packing a lunch will be a healthier option and can even save you some money too. If you are already doing this, then a great way to save time is to prepare make ahead school lunches.
School lunches should promote good nutrition for kids. Healthier school lunches would lead to healthier nutritional choices throughout children's entire lifetimes. If kids are choosing unhealthy choices for lunch, then they are going to have unhealthy eating habits throughout their lifetime (Wittman, 2017). If kids are skipping lunch, then they will be hungrier after school and they would be eating twice the amount of food the next time they eat. Skipping lunch can increase a kid’s appetite later, causing them to overeat or select foods that have very poor nutritional values. Kids skipping school lunches would also be an unhealthy eating habit (Schuna, 2015b). Healthy school lunches will provide kids with one-third of their daily calories from protein, vitamins A and C, iron, and calcium, which are critical nutrients often missing from a child’s diet. Receiving these nutrients from healthy school lunches are important for kids because then they will get the calories they need and it will give them energy throughout the day as well (Fisk, 2015). Fruits supply vitamins and minerals, most especially vitamin C and potassium. “Vitamin C is a substance necessary for healthy bones, teeth and blood vessels. All vegetables supply vitamin A and folate, which is crucial for the health of your eyes, but it also encourages your body to produce healthy white blood cells” (“A List of the
I don’t think you want a stomach virus. Stomach viruses causes you to miss days of school. Sure, you would like to miss a few days of school, but do you really want to make up all that work? Ingredients in school lunch can cause severe diarrhea. Diarrhea is hard to handle. Millions of people in United States get sick from contaminated food. When people get sick it spreads, do you want to get sick?
Students have become more restricted than ever when it comes to picking the food they want to eat in the cafeteria, most of the food is healthy and has the essential vitamins and calories a student would need. The healthy hunger free kids act was implemented in 2012 and took away the use of grease, high sodium products and more. This aimed to yes take away all the tastier foods but also to try to opt for a more balanced and healthy lunch. When a student purchases a lunch, they are encouraged to take at least one fruit or vegetable and a low-fat milk. However, most of these “required foods” end up in the trash. Most of the time it’s a hit or miss with school lunches because not all school operate the same.
Therefore we need to change the school lunch system even if we would spend a bit more money on school lunches. As a result, we would offer healthier and satisfying school lunches. It would only cost about $5 per child and annually about $27 billion dollars,it may sound to be a costly price. In response to that, there would be an immense outcome of benefits, such as lessening obesity and kids would be able to focus more in school because they would be obtaining healthier school lunches. Proven by researchers' children can process and learn more accurately by eating nutritious meals, unfortunately current lunch meals can not help improve that. Also, several kids are only able to get their meals at school because of financial circumstances. So if it was possible to have nutritious lunches they would get healthier vitamins and
Fortunately, students are slowly but steadily adapting to the new program. Foley recognized that students will even bring chips and other snacks from home to supplement the school entrees (Foley). The hope for many is that kids will begin to grab healthy snack items from the school snack line rather than bring their own from home. The children seem to be adapting to compromise with the new reforms in the school lunch
Buddha once said, “ To keep the body in good health is a duty...otherwise we shall not be able to keep our minds strong and clear.” A trend started across the United States several years ago towards improving the quality of food provided for students eating school lunch. “School lunch has evolved quite a bite over the last century”(Avey). In spite of this evolution, there are many reasons why the public school system should further improve their daily lunch program. These changes would still include the daily recommended balance of fruits, vegetables, proteins, and carbohydrates. The top three reasons to improve school lunches include: obesity rate, overall grades, and lifelong habits.
Central High School is planning to change our school lunches to something that is “healthier” and “less-fattening”. Many students disagree with this idea, but others are completely supportive about this idea. Students want something that will keep them full for the rest of the school day and not be starved to death by time they get home. This makes learning a lot harder and it makes paying attention a lot harder as well.
First of all, lunches need to have better food for less. Right now I spend about $3 on a normal lunch which is really small and extremely expensive. Usually I will buy more food to suffice my hunger and I will spend up to $5 more. That is around $8 a day on food! That is outrageous! Schools need to make food that will actually fill the students up and and make it taste better because it school lunches taste like an old
Lunch is one of the most anticipated thirty minutes of most students day. They get to converse with their friends and finish neglected homework, but what the students look forward to is the food they get to eat. In special classes(Health, Nutrition) we learn about healthy eating and dieting; unless you pack your own lunch, we must suffer and endure the unhealthy and sometimes disgusting school lunches. Schools should improve the nutritional value in our foods for many reasons; mainly for the fact that childhood obesity is a rising problem in the U.S.
School lunches are not desirable anymore. When people go to lunch, some of them cannot enjoy what they’re eating. I believe a lot of the reasons people get school lunch is they cannot afford to have lunches packed for them, so they stick with the pizza with gross cheese, and non-tasteful crust.
The Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act, which took effect in 2012, are supposed to make sure that school lunches are healthier. Greasy pizza and salty French fries are supposed to be things of the past. But are kids eating what’s being served? Can school lunch both taste very well and be healthy. More than 30 million children form through school cafeteria lines every day in the U.S and thanks to the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act, there no greasy food or salty french fries. Some food must be low calorie, fruits, veggies, and whole grains.
School lunches lack key important nutrients and vitamins. studies show that only 50% of students get a vitamin rich and nutritious meal. 25% of all school lunches lack nutritional meals. This means 176,875 students don't get a nutritious meal. This is why obesity is sweeping the nation.
