In “Schopenhauer as Educator”, Nietzsche explains how most people in society are more concerned with keeping up appearances and conforming to public opinion than truly being themselves. He addresses the issues resulting from this way of life by stating that true educators, such as Schopenhauer, can liberate us and help us find ourselves. In Part I of his essay, Nietzsche introduces the idea that humans hide their true selves due to fear from public pressures and laziness when it comes to fighting against expectations of conformity. He goes on to say that every man “beautiful, and worth regarding, as a work of nature, and never boring,” and should live as such (Nietzsche 1). He starts off explaining the kind of educator he was looking for- one that could develop a student’s strong point while also developing a periphery of other qualities. He thought on the lack of educators in Germany at the time and concluded that society was apathetic and focused on scientific discovery while disregarding the importance of humanity and educating mankind. When he finally found Schopenhauer, he admired his honesty, cheerfulness, and steadfastness. Nietzsche had faith in Schopenhauer and believed everything he said. There was never any kind of paradox in his writing and he wrote the truth because he wrote for himself; he was not trying to imitate anybody else. He was cheerful because even when talking seriously, he had victory over the issues he discussed and was able to ease the concerns of his readers with solutions. Finally, his steadfastness refers to how he never wavered from what he said. These three qualities made Schopenhauer Nietzsche’s ideal
