Scrooge is a very angry, rude, unfriendly character. Scrooge’s cruel actions to most others are unkind, especially when it’s about Christmas. The bitterness drive in Scrooge against Christmas is very strong. Scrooge also hates things such as love, happiness, generosity, and regards them as irrational until such time that a rightful trio of ghosts came to set him right. Charles Dickens paints him as an old businessman, with a ring of frosty white hair on his head, a pointed nose, red eyes, thin eyebrows, and a wiry chin. He’s so cold inside, it makes his lips blue, the tip of his nose strawberry red. The book describes him as hard and sharp as flint, self-contained, and solitary like an oyster. He is also described as a greedy man. One last feature is his shrew, grating voice, and on page 1 of the 1st Stave, Charles writes “...no wind that blew, blew bitterer than he, no falling snow more intent upon its purpose….” . Scrooge can be an very unfriendly person to be around on the holidays, or in general.
Scrooge describes the first of the three spirits that visited him a person who looks like a cross between a kid and an old man, or a grandpa. This ghost is named “The Ghost of Christmas Past,” and the spirit is illustrated as a ghost whose appearance is constantly changing. So, say, one minute he has two legs, the next he has eighteen, or he has a head, then he’s the Headless Horseman. Furthermore, he has a light emanating from the top of his head, and it is very, very
Charles dickens uses insults to portray Scrooge 's unpleasant personality. This can be alluded from Stave 1 in the novel where Scrooge can be seen snubbing the charity workers who came seeking for a donation. "If they would rather die, [...] they had better do it, and decrease the surplus population.", such insult allows the reader to comprehend that Scrooge is nothing more than a greedy man who solely believes that the peasants are just money scammers and that they should all be locked up in a "prison". Today 's audience will see Scrooge this way and agree that he is a misery, bitter old man, who doesn 't like giving away however back in the 19th century the audience would not be shocked to see a wealthy man as selfish as Scrooge. It was common in London at the time to see factory workers exploiting children who worked in hard conditions by hurting them with the most dangerous work and the cruelest words which is why I can only but say that Scrooge is an unpleasant, old wretch.
Scrooge keeps the coal-box in his own room so the clerk is not able to
When the ghost of Christmas Past visits Scrooge, it shows him where he was a little boy in school on Christmas and
The first ghost came when the clock pounded one. A horrid fusion among a child and an old man the ghost opens the Scrooge's bed curtains. According to the text the spirit is very vivid and bright. So the ghost takes Scrooge to his old school. According to the text Scrooge actually starts to laugh for the first time at the appearance of him reading fantasy books. Consequently he wasn't outdoors, playing with the other kids. The second place the ghost took Scrooge was where he and his sister were talking about their father being sent away. From the reading of the first spirit Scrooge really likes the first spirit for being very generous and thoughtful for taking Scrooge and showing him motivational parts in his life. The ghost of Christmas past helped Scrooge learn that there is more in life other than being morose all the time, there is amusement, family, bliss, and ambitious life to live.
Scrooge is a rude, dismal man who hates mankind, and Christmas. During Christmastime there is a lot of charity and for being such a wealthy man that Scrooge is, he hates to give money to charity. He also thinks that Christmas is waste of time, and it could be used for
The ghost of christmas past showed Scrooge multiple scenes showing how he treated people in the past and how he was wrong. One scene is where Past takes him back to his hometown where he sees everyone being happy and jolly and hearing the beautiful sing of christmas carolers. Past shows him that christmas isn't that bad and it never did anything to him. Past takes him back to when scrooge and his sister were back in school and how lonely they were but they still had each other. Scrooge rememberers how
Scrooge is a very mean person and he doesn't care for anyone, he will be an old miser and he could care less about anything in the world except himself. He does mean stuff all the time liked decline charity and he doesn't even wanna make the world a better place. He even declined his nephews invite to a Christmas party now that's mean and when he's asked to donate for charity he is too much of a greedy soul to do anything to help anyone and he says that they need to go to a workhouse or prison, He doesn't care about anyone and he ignores everyone and could care less about the world's problems. He thinks that that is ok and then he gets a visit from a ghost saying that three ghosts are gonna come get him and that he shouldn't have been that greedy and he is gonna get a visit from them. Scrooge is freaking out and it takes him a while and he eventually gets sent to bed. In my opinion, though he is acting like that because Marley died and he is emotionally depressed and he takes his pain out on others because he is very said that's just my opinion.
The phrase 'no warmth could warm ,nor wintry weather chill him' really emphasises that him trying to warm himself at a fire would be useless because it would not work, which perhaps explains why he does not put his heating on in winter(besides his obsession for hoarding his money). This presents him as an outsider which is further highlighted in stave 1 when the narrator says that 'no one stopped him in the street to say ,my dear Scrooge how are you?', and even beggars and blind-men fear him and his presence. His harsh personality is shown when two gentlemen working for a charity ask him to donate to the 'poor and destitute', however he says 'are there no workhouses?' 'are there no prisons?', but the worker says that they 'would rather die' to which Scrooge responds with, 'then they had better do so and decrease the surplus population'. This selfishness ius what Dickens wanted to show his readers and that wealthy people need to help others to abolish social injustice in the Victorian
In the story “A Christmas Carol” a man by the name of Ebenezer Scrooge is haunted by three various ghosts (Christmas Past, Christmas Present, and The Ghost of Christmas Yet To Come). These ghosts all impact Scrooge in their own special ways. From the beginning of “A Christmas Carol”, Scrooge changes from a miser who hates Christmas to an extremely kind and generous person who has a special place in his heart for Christmas. In most of Act I, Scrooge had a hatred for Christmas and was very stubborn and mean.
Dickens indirectly characterizes Scrooge in many ways in A Christmas Carol. He does this by showing how greedy, hateful, and cold hearted scrooge is. The first way he characterizes Scrooge is by showing how cold hearted he is. In A Christmas Carol dicken describes how scrooge's heart has froze. Dicken states “The cold within him froze”(621). Scrooge's heart cold he is to everyone and everything. Scrooge is so cold that his heart has froze.Scrooge is so cold towards everyone and thinks there is no reason to be happy. Making christmas especially not important to Scrooge. Since christmas is a holiday to be happy Scrooge thinks christmas is a waste of time and their is no reason to be marry. This is indirect characterizes towards scrooge because he is cold hearted.
When the spirit first came, Scrooge said, (699) “Tonight, if you have aught to teach me, let me profit by it.” This tells us Scrooge is willing to learn from the Ghost unlike when the Ghost of Christmas past first visited. The first place the Ghost took Scrooge is to Bob Cratchit's family. Bob has many kids, one of which is sick and he uses crutches to get around. This is Tiny Tim. Scrooge asked, (707) “Spirit, tell me of Tiny Tim will live.” Spirit responds, “I see a vacant seat… the child will die.” Scrooge begged, “ No, no, kind Spirit! Say he will be spared!” Scrooge realized that he must change his actions and the amount he pays Bob to save the boy. This shows us that Scrooge has sympathy to the boy and the family. The next place the spirit takes him, is to his nephew's house where they are making fun of Scrooge. But, the nephew toasts scrooge. Scrooge said, (710) “Spirit, please, make me visible! Make me audible! I want to talk to with my nephew and niece.” This shows change because before Scrooge had nothing to do with his family. He also frowned upon his nephew marrying his
2. The light from the Ghost of Christmas Past is very symbolic of the truth, and the truth it reveals is that Scrooge's past Christmases were mostly filled with loneliness.
As the night darkens Scrooge will soon find out the true meaning of christmas. Scrooge, wwin the play A Christmas Carol, by Charles dickens is the main character in a story that follows the past of an ungrateful old man.
