Some names are so closely tied to human characteristics, that present society can substitute the name for the behavior. A "Judas" is a traitor. A "Mother Theresa" is someone who gives of him or herself to help others. Another famous name that immediately substitutes for behavior is Ebenezer Scrooge, the fictional protagonist from Charles Dickens' classic novella, "A Christmas Carol." Today, the very mention of his name induces the image of the mean-spirited and miserly. It is common to challenge avaricious behavior with the admonition, "Don't be a Scrooge." No good person is ever accused of Scrooge-like behavior. But Dickens' novel describes the evolution of Scrooge’s character beyond this callous, penny-pinching stereotype to that of a generous
From Stave, 3 what I learned is that Scrooge is becoming a big softie or, he's getting nicer, one of those. But also that when he sees Tiny Tim all weak and sick that he actually cares for them, he then asks the Spirit, if Tiny Tim will survive, the Spirit just says “I see a vacant seat, in the poor chimney-corner and a crutch without an owner, carefully preserved. If these shadows remain unaltered by the Future, the child will die.” Scrooge then hangs his head (Not actually hang, he more like bows his head) in grief after the Spirit recites what Scrooge had said before. Then Scrooge and the ghost move on to another house, his nephew’s house to be exact, and they watch as Fred’s (His nephew) family and his wife’s family eat, drink, sing and

A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens is one of the most classic stories that has been embraced by Western culture. There is a certain timelessness to the entire story, in that it demonstrates the powerful transformation of an incredibly stilted and unlikeable character to that of someone who is giving, kind and generous. The popularity and timelessness of this play is representative of how deeply human being want to believe in the possibility of change, even radical change, and that it's not too late to change one's life. However, the timelessness and popularity of this tale also reveals something else about human nature: there's a tendency such as an overwhelming whiff and desire for human beings to believe that transformation can be overnight and immediate. The reality is that most transformation and change takes years of hard work. However, change as it is presented in this play is a manifestation of the human desire to experience quick and instantaneous transformation, even with someone's character which has formed over a period of decades. In regards to the notion that "Ebenezer Scrooge is difficult to like, but easy to understand" this is generally true if an individual has had a fair amount of life experience. This paper will demonstrate that Ebenezer Scrooge is someone who has a fatal flaw, but the flaws which are demonstrated in this play, aren't as unique as some might view them. In many respects, Scrooge is

In the story A Christmas Carol, Charles Dickens uses a few direct and indirect characterizations in his work. One character that can be categorized as a direct characterization is the story's main character Scrooge. A direct characterization is a character that the author decides to plainly explain to the reader the character's personality or traits rather that let them discover their traits throughout actions they do. An example where Charles Dickens decides to describe the character plainly to the audience is when he describes Scrooge as a covetous old sinner, the novella reads “Scrooge! A squeezing, wrenching, grasping, scraping, clutching, covetous old sinner!”(p.2). The author clearly describes him as a covetous old sinner, which means
Scrooge, a grumpy old man, he’s referred by the text of having a frosty rime on his head, meaning, he had light grey hair. Scrooge had thin eyebrows and spoke shrewdly with his wiry chin. As isolated and as glum as he was, he thought Christmas was an overrated event. Nevertheless, he literally only cares about business and himself. This is so much so the text directly states he struggled to let his employee off work for Christmas, but when he did, he gave him half pay.

Impacted can be defined as having a strong influence in a positive manor on someone or something. Scrooge is a decrepit man who owns a shop that he and his friend, Marley, used to have together. Whilst running his shop, his nephew comes into the shop, happy about it being Christmas. When Scrooge hears his nephew doing this, he gets up and walks over to him. He tells his nephew that Christmas is a useless holiday and people need to get away from celebrating to do work.
