Summative Because everyone needs to find self reliance in order to reach the American Dream, they need to go outside of their everyday routines in order to find it. First, people must ignore the social norms that keep them from truly expressing themselves. For example, drinking at a party is considered a social norm. In a study done by LIVESTRONG, they asked teens if they drank at a party only because they felt like they should and 22% of the people admitted they did (Eliza Martinez). Another reason many people don’t find self reliance is because of the way they are raised through their traditions. The American dream is something that Americans strive for and it is the goal for most people. The main goal once upon a time was to be able to live comfortably and provided for a family. Today the focus is on making as much money as possible with a little emphasis on the family aspect of the dream, stupid capitalism. For me, the American dream would be to have a solid family and create generational wealth for my family lineage, not any get rich quick schemes that we see in movies today like Jay Gats in The Great Gatsby who is a bootlegger in the 1920s to get quick wealth and be flashy about it. He wanted to rise from his poor station in life from the early years of his life, but even after obtaining said wealth he still didn’t have everything he wanted because he didn’t have a family and his status symbol wife. The portal of his life is what America is going through now in our generation, I feel that we focus so heavily on getting rich we put all our energy into the financial aspect that we don’t think much about the family sector of it. While in Forest Gump he valued the old American dream which was all about the family he accumulated wealth, but it wasn’t his primary goal he just did what he loved and was able to achieve celebrity status in his lifetime.
The American Dream is the idea of the United States having an endless opportunity for anyone, regardless of their past, race, beliefs, and their economic life now. The American Dream has been a talked about topic ever since America was created. But how achievable is it for an average American citizen? The Old Man and The sea, The Jungle, Of Mice and Men, and A Raisin in the Sun all show that the American Dream is possible if one has the right mindset and takes advantage of opportunities.
While reading the chapter on social justice, I found myself thinking about individualism and the American Dream. This is what our current education system is based on; if you, as an individual, work hard enough you can succeed. It doesn’t take into consideration social, ethnic or socioeconomic backgrounds and assumes that no matter their status, all students are starting on solid ground. It is the individual’s achievement if they succeed and entirely their fault if they fail. There is no sense of collaboration or support among students and classes. The american dream is very achievable. If there people that can come to america and have jobs, raise a family, and make money. Then I can see that it is very achievable. Immigration always has a huge impact in American. People can come to america and have a greater chance of succeeding than any other country. That why you need to have faith, be trustworthy and have freedom. There is alot to describe on how to be an american. In america there are so many freedoms you can have. Similar to Americans decades ago, citizens of the United States are pursuing the American Dream. Truslow Adams defines the American Dream as a “dream of a land in which life should be better and richer and fuller for everyone, with opportunity for each according to ability and achievement, regardless of social class or circumstances of birth” (1931). As a child growing up in middle-class America, you tend to hear this phrase a great deal. You hear that you must obtain the proper education so that you can acquire a job and live the American Dream. But how can you live the American Dream when you still have to fight just to be considered an equal, especially if you are a woman?

The United States of America has been through, overcome, and made numerous mistakes over hundreds of years. America has had wars, slavery, the Great Depression, and so many other terrible circumstances and happenings in their country. Despite all of the events America has been through, they were able to overcome them. Therefore, they were capable of continuing to be a free country and allowing their people to worship, feel, act, think, and believe however and whatever they choose. For these reasons, I have extremely high hopes in regards to America moving toward a more unified and successful future.

Defining the American Dream is a difficult task, because the dream is different for each person you ask. The stereotypical American Dream is a well-off, middle class family, living in the suburbs of America. However looking at modern day society, that dream has split into multiple different hopes, as middle class has become increasingly large, and coincidently, increasingly vague. It can no longer be defined as just being “middle class” because middle class can mean a family with well-paying jobs, no student loans, good credit, and a decent handicap at the local country club. However it can also mean a family with divorced parents, in a broken home, with multiple entry-level jobs, outstanding loans, no healthcare, and barely making ends
Today, America still provides access to the American Dream since we all have rights. Some of those rights include the pursuit of happiness, right to equality, and the right to better our world. With these rights, it is possible to achieve the American Dream, it is within reach.
It’s funny how much the so-called “American Dream” has changed so much throughout the years and the many definitions the American Dream has. For some it is only a dream but, why is that? Who is unable to achieve this dream? Why aren't they able to achieve this goal? Gender, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, these and many more hindrances don't allow people to achieve their version of the American dream stereotypes and racism which play a huge role in today’s society don't allow them to reach this goal.
I believe the American Dream is living in a house , having a stable job , enough money to do whatever you would like and lastly to live happy. The American Dream is also to go to school and have freedom of speech. America does not provide access to the American Dream for everyone because everyone does not have the same opportunities as others to go to school and have a good job, in America people discriminate others of different race and for being a woman. Through Yezierska and Noda , we come to understand how the American Dream is not possible.
