Servants In The Victorian Era

Living as a rich man in England, life can get pretty dull. Any hard work or challenge is done by a servant

Who were the servants they were hard working people who dedicated their lives to helping people in their homes. the life of a victorian During the time that Dr John lived at Shibden with his family they had many servants. However, the number and type of servants that the family employed changed over the years, depending on the needs of the family.

Slavery in the newly formed United States of America took many forms and those slaves had varied duties. Some common duties that African American slaves performed were field workers, house servants, and artisans or skilled workers. One might think that certain positions were easier or more advantageous than others. In order to determine if this theory is accurate, one must first look at typical duties, good and bad, of the different positions.

A bunch of research has shed light on how early some children during this time period started working in the Victorian Era.  Some children started working as early as a mere eight and a half years old to twelve years old, working in factories, repairing machine equipment that was tedious or required small hands to fix, cleaning factory floors or chimneys or working in mines (Humphries 1).  The machines that children were working on were dangerous and often resulted in injury due to no safety features on them.  The kids working on them had to be careful or they could very well lose a finger or hand, which would lead to them losing their job (Cunnington).

During the Victorian Era, there were many types of servants, every one of them are in a class.

In the Victorian Era, having a job was a must need just like it was in any other civilized era. Just like any other era your occupation was your social standing, whether or not you could make an impact in other people’s lives. So, just what type of absurd job did people have to make a living?

In victorian Britain children above the age of 4 had to go and work in a workhouse like this one:

Landlords called masters benefited from the head right system in Virginia and Maryland. In the head right system, masters received fifty acres of land if they paid the passage of a labor or indentured servants. More masters became great merchant-planters with big estates causing land to become scarce. Masters began to not agree on freedom dues and on land grants. The indentured servants became more crowded and the conditions grew harsh. Servants were punished with a extended term of service if they misbehaved. Misbehaving included a housemaid who became pregnant or a laborer who killed a hog. After freedom was granted to indentured servants, they had no choice but to hire themselves back to their former masters for low wages.

I think it is awesome how people can live with you and be your servants because how can you trust them because you really don't know them . They could steal your hard worked stuff that you bought with your money .That is not fair to you because you worked your tail off to earn that cold hard cash . But if you can trust them and they don't steal your lucky . The sernats dresses were white and black the white was on top and blick in the inside they are really ugly and weird looking. During the Victorian Era from 1873-1901, the working class was the backbone of English cities and did not get the recognition or help they deserved. People that were in the working class often had to do the types of work that no one else wanted to do, or jobs that paid almost nothing. Child labor was typical in working class families around this time of England’s history, no one was excused from work. After a long day of work, workers would return to their homes where the living conditions were atrocious and often over packed and unsanitary. Due to these living conditions the health of a person was so appalling that many people in the working class would die at a young age. Crime would often occur in alley ways and the poorest areas of England.

A world of class systems, the aristocracy and working class. a divide so vast people could not see the other side. following some of great minds of the Victorian era actively fighting this status quo notably Charles Dickens and his many books championing the ideas of social change at a time when it was considered dangerous to challenge the predefined views in society about the poor and working class. This world would come to an abrupt end, between screaming shells and the bloodshed of millions.

During the time period known as Victorian England, the high unemployment rate caused England’s lower class to flood the streets with nowhere to live. Soon after, the construction of workhouses began. Workhouses were built to accommodate the poor people in England. Here, they were housed, fed, and forced to work. Workhouses were some of the most cruel and controlling places in Victorian England.

The Victorian Period was a great influence to the authors who composed novels at that time where distinctions between social classes as well as between men and women were strongly marked. During this period, it was precisely a woman who ruled. Alexandrina Victoria who was born on May 24, 1819 became Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland from June 20, 1837 until her death on January 22, 1901. Victoria’s reign was one of the longest of a female in history. At only the age of 18, after her uncle William Henry IV died, she began a span of 63 years of reign. In spite of her independence and power, Victoria fell into a deep depression when her husband died in 1861 and ever since she wore black every day for the rest of her
