Service dogs assist people that have physical and mental impairments. It was not until after World War I, a modern guide dogs school was founded. However, the United States did not have a guide dog until 1928. Now there are service dog schools across the United States like the Guide Dogs of America and Occupaws. There is act that has passed to allow services dogs to assist their owners in restaurants, stores, health care facilities, places of lodging, or recreational settings, the act is called the American’s with Disabilities Act guaranties. There are ways to obtain a service dog; a person must be legally disabled and able to train with the dog for t in California under the name “International Guiding Eyes.” Joseph Jones, Sr. founded the association with assistance of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers. The owner must be legally blind. The person must be able to travel independently with a cane. Be able to live in good living conditions. Be in good physical, flexible, and coordinated to handle a guide dog. Provide appropriate care for the dog with feeding, veterinary expenses, and monthly preventatives. In addition to the requirements a video of themselves walking with a cane and sighted guide needs to be submitted.
The guide dog performs functions and tasks for the person that has disabilities and cannot perform for him or herself. A sighting seeing dog is one of the services for who are blind. This is the type of service animal with which most people are familiar. The guide dog is not a pet, but not licensed or certified. But there are service animals that assist persons with other kinds of disabilities in their day-to-day activities. Some examples include: Alerting persons with hearing impairments to sounds.
