She Fights Like A Man:
Transgendered Fighting in the MMA
Enraged Mixed Martial Arts Fighter Matt Mitrione used harsh words to describe Fallon Fox by saying, “That is a lying, sick, sociopathic, disgusting freak” (Gregory Para 2). Mixed Martial Artist (MMA) Fallon Fox “the Queen of Swords,” formally known as Boyd Burton, has made headlines for being the first openly transgendered person in MMA. In 2006, Fox underwent gender reassignment (Fox Para 2). It is estimated that 2-5% of the population identify themselves as transgendered people. Fallon Fox is not the only transgendered who has being discriminated against, out of 392 male to female(MTF) transsexuals 83% reported verbal abuse and 85% of 123 women to male (WTF) have reported verbal abuse because of gender identity (“Transgender” Para 8 ). Transgendered females should be allowed to fight in the MMA because science proves that the hormonal and physical changes do not give them an advantage over other women, not to mention it is discriminatory to exclude them. Men that undergo gender reassignment surgery are on the same level of a natural woman because they “have significantly less muscle strength and bone density, and higher fat mass, than males” as stated by Dr. Eric Vilain (Gregory Para 5). Often times male to female transsexuals have cosmetic surgery such as breast implants, facial reconstruction and fat relocation. During hormone therapy, patients are given estrogens, finasteride, spironolactone, and GnRH analogs;
There are a few different types of transgender people, but the main two are female-to-male (FtM) and male-to-female (MtF). For FtM transgender people, typical treatment includes hormone replacement treatment, breast removal surgery, and some trans men also opt for surgery that gives them a phallus. For MtF transgender people, typical treatment includes hormone replacement treatment, breast augmentation, facial reconstruction surgery to look more feminine, and some trans women opt for a surgery that changes their genitals so they will have a vulva. All of these procedures are cosmetic and some of them are even used for cis-gender (person whose gender matches the sex they were assigned at birth) people. “Cosmetic surgery is a unique discipline of
On May 29, 1851, Sojourner Truth gave her most famous speech at the Women’s Convention in Akron, Ohio. Truth, being born a slave and escaping to her freedom, was both a women’s rights activist and abolitionist. In a male-dominated society, Truth wanted to gain awareness for the inequalities of women and African Americans during the time period. She makes several claims how African Americans and women are not inferior to the white male population. By targeting those males, Truth portrays them as antagonists and thus gives the women and the African Americans something to focus their struggles on. Sojourner Truth attempts to persuade her audience to support the women’s rights movement and on subtler terms, to support the need for African
However, for those who can afford it, sex reassignment surgery and Hormone Replacement Therapy are combination that help many transitioning bodies. Hormone Replacement Therapy is usually the more common option amongst transgendered people because it is less costly, as mentioned earlier, although it is still quite expensive. The cost of hormones alone for transitioning is approximately $1500, not factoring in doctors visits and lab tests. (Transgender Health Benefits). Hormone Replacement Therapy regarding transgender men can be administered in different ways. “Hormone therapy for transmen consists of the androgen testosterone, which is available in several forms: intramuscular, transdermal patch or gel, or subcutaneous implant.” (Center of Excellence for Transgender Health). These different forms of receiving hormones are all administered by a healthcare professional. “Most of the effects of hormones happen in the first two years.” (Ashbee & Goldberg) This means that within the first two years of regularly participating in Hormone Replacement Therapy, the secondary sex characteristics of biological males will become apparent in transitioning trans males. This includes a variety of changes, such as the deepening of the voice, hair growth, cessation of ovulation and menstruation, increased red blood cell count, etc. (Female to Male). While the aforementioned changes are very prominent, lower dosages of the hormones will need to continuously be taken during the person’s
Testosterone belongs to a class of male hormones called androgens that is vital for sexual and reproductive development. The National Institutes of Health regards “testosterone as the most important male hormone”(Rettner). Although the primary role of testosterone directly relates to males, women also produce testosterone at lower levels. Women’s total levels are about a “tenth to a twentieth of men’s levels”(Rettner). According to the Mayo Clinic, this hormone plays a role in sex drive, sperm production, fat distribution, red cell production, and maintenance of muscle strength and
Our government is based on the idea of natural rights for every citizen; every citizen means all citizens. It does say “all men are created equal”, this mean men and women. Susan B. Anthony was a woman of great courage and dedication. She exemplified these characteristics through out her life. She tears and pulls apart the Declaration of Independence, preamble of the Constitution, sex qualifications, and women’s equal rights. She describes in clear detail her position on women’s rights. She was the first women in our history to take a stand for women’s rights.
Hormone Replacement Therapy is a recent medical development for those trying to transition. Hormones are given to children
The human body is a complex system; both the female and male have the same basic organs and almost the same functions. The main difference is considered to be the sexual organs and the hormones they produce. As some people might know the women’s body secretes the hormone estrogen, which starts the secondary sexual characteristics, which include the breasts, the menstrual cycle, the pubic and armpit hair production, the metabolism, and the ability to create a baby inside of her. Estrogen production is mainly produced in the ovaries and affects the vagina, fallopian tubes, uterus, cervix and mammary glands. The male’s body secretes the hormone testosterone, which affects their sex drive, their bone mass, their voice, their hair production, their

Throughout the novel The Woman Warrior, by Maxine Hong Kingston, the past is incorporated into the present through talk-stories combined into each chapter. Kingston uses talk-stories, to examine the intermingling of Chinese myths and lived experience. These stories influence the life of the narrator as the past is constantly spoken about from the time she is young until the novel ends and she becomes an adult. Chapter one titled, “No Name Woman”, is an example of the narrator referring to her mother’s talk-stories and a prominent illustration of incorporating the past into the present. This talk- story is culturally based to express information about the past.
In both Beloved by Toni Morrison and The Woman Warrior by Maxine Hong Kingston, readers are presented with two female protagonists who are struggling with the concept of freedom. For Morrison, her main character Sethe has trouble coming to terms with her newfound freedom and the emotional difficulties associated with her past. Likewise, The Woman Warrior tells of Kingston's journey as a young Chinese-American girl growing up in America and the cultural injustices she experienced that infringed on her own freedom. In this paper, I will argue that while both characters are technically free, each story's protagonist encounters obstacles in her life that restrict this reality. In her prologue to Beloved, Morrison wonders what freedom for women
For those who have transformed themselves or undergo the operation, they might face two different situations which is the success or the failure. If their operation is successful and they are alive, they might face another problem regarding their parts that have been changed or their health. Their new private parts may not functions well, thus cause them to stay in the hospital again and again until it is good. They will feel the pain that they never feel before but they cannot do anything as the operation had been done. For the operations that failed, the person might be dead because of the failure of operation, or they might be sick and stay in the hospital. Besides that, those who are transgendered might have health problem such as cancer due to the medications or operations that they involved in. As an example, estrogen has the potential to increase the risk of blood clotting, high blood pressure, elevated blood sugar and water retention. The women, who take testosterone, especially when given orally or in high doses, carry the risk of liver damage.
Steroids imitate the effects of male hormone testosterone, although they also occur in women. There are two effects on the body caused by testosterone which are anabolic and androgenic. Anabolic effects stimulate muscle growth, instant recovery from injury and thicker bones. Androgenic effects creates and develops masculine characteristics, including facial hairs, testicles, deeper voice and muscle mass. These effects still occur naturally in women but not in such large amounts as men. Men and women often
he Fountain of Youth's story has been told many a time throughout the years. This however, is the very best of them all, full of romance and royalty, peasants and friendships. It is said to have taken place during the year of King Gilbert's reign. Prince Alexander was the King's only son, and from a very young age, he was very good at all he did, with very little help from tutors or private instructors. Though he had only one friend, his nursemaid, Clemence's, only daughter, and her name was Arabella. Arabella was born just after the prince no longer needed her mothers services, so he never saw the two together. Arabella was just about 6 years younger than the Prince, and certainly much farther down on the social pyramid, but no one cared how close they were, maybe because very few people knew.
A typical warrior is a medieval knight in shining armor fighting for his life and homeland. Today, the definition of what it means to be a warrior has become ambiguous. Often times, we view those willing to sacrifice their lives for others--soldiers, police officers, or firefighters--as warriors. Even expanded in this way, the warrior still has a connotation of physical bravery, masculine strength, and unhindered confidence. However, the word warrior can have an entirely new meaning when we use it in a literary context. It can be defined as a person who is simply fighting for convictions and values that are morally and ethically right. As associated with women, some real, some legendary, some with evident power, some seeming to be weak.
