Currently, people are debating over the rights of transgender people in America.
The government has been trying to figure out what to do when it comes to bathroom laws and more importantly, insurance coverage. Transitioning from one gender to the other is very expensive. Some insurances cover hormone treatment and surgery, while others do not. The fact of it is that these surgeries are cosmetic. Covering transgender surgeries will also give attention to a subject that will confuse kids and affect them in a negative way. Trans people are using money that could be used to cover someone’s life-threatening disease, just so they can look like the opposite gender. The treatment for transgender people shouldn’t be covered by insurance.
There are a few different types of transgender people, but the main two are female-to-male (FtM) and male-to-female (MtF). For FtM transgender people, typical treatment includes hormone replacement treatment, breast removal surgery, and some trans men also opt for surgery that gives them a phallus. For MtF transgender people, typical treatment includes hormone replacement treatment, breast augmentation, facial reconstruction surgery to look more feminine, and some trans women opt for a surgery that changes their genitals so they will have a vulva. All of these procedures are cosmetic and some of them are even used for cis-gender (person whose gender matches the sex they were assigned at birth) people. “Cosmetic surgery is a unique discipline of
While controversial, I strongly believe feminism is one of the multiple different problems of America today. Saying this will probably spark reactions such as “misogynist” and such, however, I believe in this because I really do believe in equality between the two sexes. Feminism is a movement that today is only creating advantages for women while claiming to be benefiting both sexes. In fact, a study conducted in the United States by The Fawcett Society and Kaiser Family Foundation (2016) showed fewer than 1 in 5 women describe themselves as a “feminist” even though over 85% of them believe in equality between the sexes, why? Because it is clear that feminism has become something different now. It has little to do with equality and moreso hating on men by making laws where women have the upperhand such as almost always getting the child in a divorce unless the man can prove the woman is not suited for the child, or inventing terms such as “manspreading” which is the act of a male spreading his legs in a public area to showcase “dominance”. These faults explain why women happen to be abandoning it by the millions. In the United Kingdom the numbers were even worse, just 7% of women describe themselves as a feminist despite just about 92% believing in equality between the sexes (The Fawcett Society, 2016). This shows people see a difference between the two words “feminism” and “equality”. It spreads false information such as the supposed “wage gap” and tries to constantly position women as the victims.
Many people have strong opinions pertaining to transgender folk and their rights. It’s becoming more and more of a political issue, especially since North Carolina’s proposal of the “bathroom bill” which declares people should be required by law to use restrooms matching with the sex on their birth certificate. Transgenders have been in a controversial spotlight for just about a decade now, and many people are perplexed. An even more controversial topic is transgender youth. Should transgender teens be allowed to go undergo hormone therapy before adulthood? Transitioning genders is a very long, very complex process. Usually, if a child or young teen wants to transition to the opposite gender, they are given “hormone blockers,” which are agents used to suppress sex hormones and prevent puberty. Hormone blockers make it easier and more effective to achieve the desired physical appearance in gender transition. They also help with gender dysphoria. When transgender people are ready to start the transition, they are given hormones which cause their bodies to develop into the desired form. Gender transition is a very complex process that works differently for everyone, and it definitely makes sense how many people disagree with minors going through such a complicated physical change.
The LGBT community in the United States has always had massive difficulty fitting into our society. For many years they put up with constant mistreatment and other forms of abuse coming from the those who do not agree with their lifestyle. They have for long advocated for the acceptance of their existence and punishment for crimes committed against them. One of the hardest battles the community has had to face was the right to marry in a society that still holds the values of a traditional relationship which is between a male and female. The struggle was quite harsh but it all paid off by 2015 when the supreme court granted gay couples the right to marry. This historical decision did not go without outcry and criticisms. Most of the dissatisfaction came from those who hold very religious values and beliefs that claims homosexuality is a sin. Religion has always been a part of the American way of life since the nation's founding and with that homosexuality has been demonized throughout our society. Now that gay couple possess the legal rights to have a marriage license, religious companies and/or stores are now denying service to LGBT couples as they believe it sinful on their behalf to even take part. Many people gay or straight who fought for gay rights believe these is pure discrimination and that stores should not have the right to deny service for any customer for any reason. However, this belief is unconstitutional and goes
The current context of LGBTQ+ and women’s rights such as abortion with the recent election of President Trump was the inspiration for my research. I feel it is important for everyone to know when there has potentially been a violation of right’s, no matter the side one person and one vote can make a difference in so many lives. My mind has always been overcome with questions that relate to religion and the role it plays in politics. I have found through personal experience that religion plays in integral part in the political decision making of many individuals. These questions led me to formulate a formal question to give direction to my research. This question is, “How has Christianity impacted the passage of LGBTQ+ and women’s rights laws
It was now potentially unlawful for a plan to deny coverage for services that are included in a plan solely because of an individual’s gender identity or because of the gender used to enroll in a plan (NCTE, n.d.). It was a federal court ruling in 2015 (Rumble v. Fairview Health Services) that confirmed the ACA prohibits discrimination based on gender identity. The decision clarified that health care providers and hospitals accepting federal Medicare or Medicaid funds are subject to the ACA's prohibition of discrimination based on sex, which extends to transgender individuals (Kellaway, 2015). Shortly thereafter, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services issued a rule confirming that the ACA prohibits discrimination based on gender identity, specifically in health care. Plans could no longer deny coverage for medically appropriate service simply because of a transgender identity or because of the gender listed on an insurance record (Albeni, 2015). Yet with these protections, there still remains a gap in transgender male reproductive
More and more kids and teens are realizing that, they are not who they want to be. Meaning that, they want to, or have already changed their gender identity. This doesn’t seem like the problem, but these kids, teens, and even adults don't have the rights we have on a regular daily bases. According to Discovery Education, it says that, these kids and teens aren’t allowed to use the bathroom of the gender they choose to be. This is a big problem throughout the United States, especially in elementary, middle, and high schools. The government also took away the law stating that transgender people, are to use
Between 100-500 genders reassigned surgeries are performed here in the United States. Global numbers of surgeries performed may be two to five times larger than that and that includes surgeries performed on children born with intersex genitalia (Susan Scutti). Fifty-Nine percent of the people think that transgender should use the bathroom they are more comfortable with if they have gotten the reassigned surgery and their birth certificate changed (Catherine E.
Issues that prevent or hinder trans people from receiving hysterectomies include healthcare coverage, financial resources, lack of willing surgical teams to perform the procedure, and lack of competent surgeons (Van Trotsenburg, 2009). Healthcare continues to be a major factor that prevents trans people from getting the proper treatment that they deserve. According to Dickey et al., (2016) in 2008, data were collected and discovered that 19% of TGNC respondents were uninsured, with higher rates of insurance among African Americans and those living in the southern regions of the United States. A history of discrimination and prejudice has compromised their education, housing and health care (Unger, 2014).
The medical field is a mixing bowl of all walks of life. Doctors, nurses, surgeons, along with all other employees under the title “health care providers” seek to treat patients in need of care. There is no discrimination in this medical world. But, insurance companies are not a part of this realm. They may choose to discriminate if they feel a procedure is medically unnecessary. Ten states in America belong to a group of such that does not allow Medicaid to cover any gender reassignment surgeries, for which they deem unnecessary. According to Dr. Ilana Addis, the noncoverage for transgender surgeries may in fact, be causing the need for necessary medical treatment.
The lack of education in medical schools regarding transgender-related care results is a shortage of provider willing to perform transition-related care. Therefore, there is simply a lack of providers able to treat transgender people, making it difficult for transgender people to receive care. Transgender people report having to drive countless hours in order to reach providers for hormone treatment or report having to leave the country in order to receive genital reconstruction surgery (Puckett 7). Unsurprisingly, 29-63% of male-to-female transgender persons in urban groups report unsupervised hormone use (Roberts 984). This is a serious point of concern considering hormone treatment has dangerous side effects including
The bathroom debate is a very serious touchy subject, and in several states, a controversial law was passed stating that if a transgender person has sex reassignment surgery they have the right to change the sex on their birth certificate, and in turn, they will be allowed to use the restroom of their choice. (BusinessInsider). However, not all people who are transgender feel comfortable with having gender reassignment surgery and many cannot afford it. Transgender people should not be punished for identifying with the opposite gender or made uncomfortable because of their personal decisions.
Transsexualism started with a few men that were trying to be different from the others. Magnus and Benjamin were the first surgeons to perform gender altering surgeries. They changed the world forever and will help many that are uncomfortable with their gender, for centuries. Since then, there have been groups have collectively researched to see the different viewpoints of people. The Huffington Post took a survey, asking many different questions to see how people feel about transsexuals. Overall the results were that more people supported transsexuals. Surveys like this are great ways to influence how we should move forward with the transgender movement. Along with that, a lot of people get blurred when it comes to the line between L, G, B, and T. "The transgender population has not received anywhere near the same cultural exposure as the gay community. 'For more and more people, gays and lesbians do not seem strange—but the idea of denying them rights does,' Gray wrote. "Such a breakthrough seems unlikely for the transgender movement…. There are only around 700,000 transgender people in the United States, compared with around eight million gay, lesbian, and bisexual people. They are invisible in a way that other minorities are not.'" (Transgender Rights: Should federal, state, and local governments take steps to protect transgender rights? 3) That is one of the biggest reasons why transsexuals don't get their rights. People just compare how different transsexuals are worse. Through all of the years of controversy over Transgenders, there have been people that picked up the idea and have supported this vastly moving
Transgenders already struggle to be accepted, therefore to become transgender, it should be cheaper. Transgenders are people whose gender identity doesn't match their biological gender assigned at birth. Many transgenders feel that they'll never fit in. Most insurance companies don't cover medical bills for transgenders. It should be cheaper to become transgender because their suicide rate is high, they face a lot of discrimination, but gender reassignment is really dangerous.
Many transgender individuals undergo hormone therapy to facilitate their transition from female to male (FtM) or male to female (MtF). Hormone therapy carry potential side effects that require unique screening, education and management. We as healthcare provides have a responsibility to be informed and have an understanding of these unique situations that can make them vulnerable to certain events and increased risks.
But one thing is certain: No one chooses to be transgender. Scientists have studied potential causes of someone being transgender and have found that some people are born with an extra x or y chromosome, or are born with a certain set of chromosomes but their bodies are unable to respond to estrogen or testosterone. Scientists also think that it could be a hormone imbalance or the use of certain medications during pregnancy. There could also be something about a trans person’s brain structure that causes them to feel differently about their identity than what they have biologically
