“A Pair of Tickets” is a short story written by the famous writer named Amy Tan. This story focuses on a woman called Jing-Mei Woo. Jing-Mei Woo is born in the United States, even though her parents are from China. She is considered as a Chinese American. In consideration of being born and raised in the United States, as Jing-Mei gets older she is having a hard time to accept that she is Chinese. Jing-Mei and her father, Canning Woo buys a pair of tickets to travel to China after her mother’s death because Jing-Mei wants to know what it feels to be Chinese and visit her sisters as well. Three places that Jing-Mei Woo shows her reactions and feelings are in the taxi, the hotel, and Shanghai Airport.
Jing- Mei Woo’s reactions and feeling are affected inside a taxi in Guangzhou. While, in the taxi Jing- Mei says, “Aiyi talks nonstop, so I have no chance to ask her about the different sights we are passing by” (193). This shows that Jing- Mei is interested in what she is observing, while being in the taxi and have questions to ask Aiyi, who is her great aunt; however, Aiyi is busy talking about another topic. It can be said that Jing-Mei’s feelings are not good as it should be because she is not learning about the different kind of things she sees on the road as in the buildings, shops, etc ... Jing-Mei reacts, to males and females that are “standing on narrow platforms, scraping the sides,” getting their job done without having their “safety straps” or “helmets” (193). She
