Koby-Nine, in the last learning story I documented your amazing musical movements . This time I photographed you tupeke over the blocks. Your body co-ordination, strength, and perseverance impressed me. On this occasion, you and your friends set up the wooden blocks for tupeke. You were one of the tamariki who was brave to tackle this challenge. At first I noticed you started jumping slowly, and tripped over in the middle accidently. Everyone was worried, but you did not give up. You got back up and continued jumping to you reached the last block. Koby-Nine, what great courage and perservance you demonstrated! Later you attempted a few more jumps and each time you jumped faster and did not knock any blocks over. Ka pai Koby-Nine! You are
The streetlights reflected red on our silhouette-looking faces and flooded the 11:37PM sky. His much-too-nice truck hummed over the cracked foundation of the road, luckily distracting his oceanic eyes from the prominent goosebumps on my forearms. Ashes flew and faded onto my black, cotton hoodie from the cancer hanging from his chapped lips. Chapped lips that curled into a grin when I sat inches away from his blonde hair brushing against my cheek. I convinced myself that he was finding other focus points like the illuminated radio screen or the coffee cups shaking in their holders or the seatbelt light blinking on his dashboard, yet my eyes remained fixed on those chapped lips. Although, it was dark. We only ever made eye contact

The irony of life is that as one grows older they are found wanting youth, while being young one is found wanting to be older and “wiser”. Sandra Cisneros’ short story Eleven puts the reader in the characters shoes, the character being Rachel the narrator. Eleven is told in first person point of view and has many literary devices used. The setting is mainly in the classroom and other than that it is just Rachel’s thoughts. In the short story “Eleven”, author Sandra Cisneros presents a young girl named Rachel, being the narrator, who realizes that in order to get the respect that many have she needs to be older. Cisneros is able to put any reader in the Rachel’s shoes by making one emotion that she gives go for all ages at one point in their
In the short story, "Eleven," by Sandra Cisnernos, Cisneros describes the birthday of Rachel, an eleven year-old who was humiliated on her birthday. Her teacher, Mrs. Price, claimed that an old sweater belonged to her, when in reality, it was Sylvia Saldivar's who ironically claimed it belonged to Rachel. Rachel was left crying and depressed the rest of the day, when she was commanded to wear it. Cisneros best characterizes Rachel through her well use of her diction, imagery, and repetition.
Kenyon worked hard on his cowbell part for the sixth grade concert assembly. A seemingly simple part, it has provided Kenyon a way to learn to maintain a pattern and a rhythmic groove that he can apply to all of his playing. His reading of notation will improve with his diligent attention to the subdivisions of the beat and my directions for sticking (which hand to use). Kenyon has come a long way during the last
One night Chelsea was at home in bed and she had woken up from a dream. Her dream was about her mother being dead and she was hanging on a cross like jesus was. So when she woke she was crying and went looking for her mother. She was walking around the house and she wasn’t in there. So she went outside still crying screaming her mother's name “mother” “mother”.
The girl in the photo and Rachel from Sandra Cisneros's short story, Eleven are different from each other. The girl in the photo is protesting. The girl in the photo is on top of someone, sticking out from the crowd with her fist to the air, and speaking out confidently. This shows she is fearless and determined to get her point across. Her bravery is displaced by her sticking out from the rest of the crowd and shouting. The girl in the photo is standing up for herself and what she believes in. The girl in the photo is different from Rachel because she has the confidence to speak up and take a stand. On the other hand, Rachel is a weak and shy girl who cannot stand up for herself. When Mrs Price tells Rachel to put the sweater on she does not
In the short story, “Eleven”, by Sandra Cisneros, the main character, Rachel, feels upset with both the teacher and her fellow students because she feels mistreated, she feels made fun of, and she openly weeps in front of the entire class. Rachel, throughout the story, feels mistreated because the teacher, Ms. Price, will not accept the fact that the red sweatshirt does not belong to Rachel. It can be inferred that other classmates also show this kind of behavior to Rachel, even though it is not directly stated in the story. On multiple occasions, the teacher, along with other pupils, repeatedly say that the sweater belongs to Rachel. For example, the teacher states to Rachel that, “You put that sweater on right now and no more nonsense.” A
The minute Rei walked into the building he knew it was a trap. One look at the man before him—Kurose Youma— and he knew some bullshit was going to go down. It was just a feeling and Rei had no proof, but he had a knack for knowing these things. Call it a sixth sense, but the man could discern from a glance what a person’s motive was; be it good or bad. Even if that was a black and white way to label it.
Temple asking him how school was going. Andrew was a very talkative and energetic boy with a heavy sense of sarcasm. While Andrew was telling Ms. Temple about school, Ms. Temple was putting a shoulder rest on his instrument and tuning it. At 4:51pm, Andrew showed Ms. Temple his fourth finger exercises. Ms. Temple asked for it to move to the C string. Once Andrew did this, Ms. Temple asked if he could make a thumping sound when his finger hit his fingerboard. Ms. Temple stated how it should be put down with authority. Andrew seemed to struggle with this and felt like it was his viola that was the issue. Ms. Temple quickly tried it on his viola to show him how it was possible and involved pinky strength. At 4:53pm, Andrew played through exercise thirteen and twenty-four in the Suzuki book. Throughout this exercise, Andrew was able to play the exercises well and make funny comments throughout. At 4:56pm, Andrew took out Suzuki Book 1 and opened it to, Bohemian Folk Song. He was able to play through this piece well! Andrew stated afterwards, “At least I tried to do the ritardando”. His knowledge and articulation of musical terminology was very impressive due to his young age. Ms. Temple really focused on Andrew’s posture by making sure he did not over exaggerate it. She also focused on note names and having Andrew verbalize it. At 5:00pm, Ms. Temple was moving to show the increase of bow and
A well planned theme and a compelling adventure is enough of any reader to become drawn into an author’s writing. The short story “Eleven,” by Sandra Cisneros is narrated through a young eleven year old girl, Rachel, whose emotions and actions clash with her inexperienced age. She talks about how sometimes, people act younger, but never actually act older, in a sense, and how only if people reach an age, or time period in their life, do they fully understand what their emotions and actions mean. Literary elements, like characterization, symbolism, diction, and imagery, are expressed through Cisneros’ writing style and her narration, so the reader can fully understand the position of the main character and her struggles.
Sugar sat up as Wyatt leaned back in his chair and stretched. He turned his attention to a monitor that was anchored to the wall above the communications set up, on which four security camera feeds ran simultaneously, each taking up a quarter of the screen. There were wide-angle day/night security cameras trained on the exit points for each of the emergency tunnels, one aimed at the surface door at the top of the mudroom stairwell, and one that was positioned approximately halfway up the driveway that provided a view of the front yard, which Wyatt felt would be the most likely point of approach for any unwelcome visitors. That monitor and the cameras, along with the ham radio, were wired into both the main generator and a separate,
Just a while ago I read the realistic fiction short story, “Eleven” by Sandra Cisneros. Rachel’s day started out just like any other day, only today wasn’t any other day. Today was her eleventh birthday. It was supposed to be perfect, Rachel’s mom was making a cake and when her dad got home, they would all sing “Happy birthday, happy birthday to you.” When Rachel got to class things were different than she expected. It all started when Mrs. Price asked who’s sweater it was that had been in the coat closet for a month. Then “That stupid Sylvia Salvador says “I think it belongs to Rachel, ”” and Mrs. Price believed her. Then Mrs. Price made Rachel wear the ugly, germy, smelly, “maybe a thousand years old”, red sweater. All the years inside
¨Stand up for what you believe in even if it means standing alone-unknown In the short story Eleven by Sandra Cisneros Rachel faces in three battles that she loses with a bow against a string. I found that sometimes people struggle to stand up for themselves when challenged by people with stronger personality, there are three reason I came up with to support this Rachel losses herself when challenged by mrs.price, sylvia and when she thinks about the time on the clock. One reason that she is challenged by higher personality is when Rachel is challenged by mrs.price she loses the battle and herself when she starts to cry in front of the class and gets embarrassed because of it which leads to our next reason she wants to take the ugly yarn sweater
The Kodaly method is a system used all around the globe to teach the reading, writing and performing music through the medium of the voice. The method has been used for about a century and has proven to be an effective way to learn about the many complexities of reading and performing music. The system has fallen in and out of favor over the years and has recently regained resurge in popularity. (Robert Garfias, 2004)
