Athletes should take drug tests because they might be cheating in their games and competitions. They should take their tests at least once every month and one before they compete in a game to make sure it's fair for everyone. Throughout the years, there have been cases in which the athlete uses drugs right before entering a competition like the Olympics. An African-American woman who was competing in the Olympics used drugs to get an advantage from all the other athletes, and she won the gold medal all the time. Once she was about to retire, she confessed that she was using drugs the whole time and was stripped of all of her gold medals that she won while using her drugs. If she actually tried to win the medal fairly, she could've done it
I think it should be a federal law that all athletes should be tested before competing because performance enhancing drugs have a negative effect on long term health, they give an unfair advantage, and it could hurt other players because the drug could cause anger, drowsiness, and pain.
Should athletes be allowed to use performance-enhancing drugs (such as steroids or EPO) or techniques (such as blood doping or oxygen tanks)?
Drug use in school athletics has become a substantial problem in today’s society. With the rising pressure to succeed and the high level intensity in athletics, it does not come to a surprise that so many student–athletes are giving in to drugs. Many schools that are faced with drug use are turning to mandatory drug tests for student-athletes; however mandatory drug tests are a violation of the Fourth Amendment, the Fifth Amendment and drug testing reverses the legal principle of innocent until proven guilty. In order to protect the rights of the American people, drug testing student-athletes without suspicion and without sufficient evidence should not be introduced into school athletics due to the fact that it violates the Fourth
Do we really want student-athletes replacing hard work with steroids? That’s like cheating on a test. For instance, many have been abusing drugs in a way to make their performance on the court or field better. This is a practice athletes have been in for years to make them a better player or asset to the team. All who are participating in athletics should be guaranteed a safe and fair game instead of worrying about those taking a daily dose of drugs for their own pleasure. These actions they are taking are not only dangerous and unfair, but illegal. For those who do participate in the consumption of drugs, their should be a formidable punishment. Although some uninformed people might say drug testing is an unnecessary waste of time and money,
Drug tests need to happen and they are very important to sporting events. Say a person has a “buzz” from nicotine that could come from dipping tobacco or smoking cigarettes, is in a football game. Their mind could be tired or weakened from the nicotine and could get hurt severely bad. Or if a guy took steroids before a football game, he is putting himself and others in danger of getting hurt badly. According to New York Times, steroid use is very high in football players, weight lifters, and sometimes even baseball players. If you
After years of delays, rising tensions and hours of discussion, a proposal to randomly drug-test Zionsville High School students was approved Monday night. The Zionsville School Board voted 3-2 in favor of the new policy which requires any students who elect to participate in extracurricular activities or park on school property to consent to random drug tests.Students who fail a drug test will be required to enter and complete a drug counseling program. The approved plan is a variation of one supported years ago by the Zionsville Student Rights Union. They also proposed that only students who park or participate in afterschool programs be tested, but the union plan wanted students to face no consequences at school, and for positive results to
Eugene Robinson from the Washington post once stated “Most fans watch sports…to see people unlike themselves perform extraordinary physical feats. The superhuman quality of professional athletes is precisely what Americans admire about them” (CITE) Drug testing was created to stop the use of performance enhancements as artificial stimulants for physical and mental enhancements. (CITE) Drugs which are used by athletes in all types of sports have many advantages and disadvantages. Therefore, laws were created to keep an equal playing field.
The Olympics now have various organizations and committees delegated to testing for and eliminating the use of performance enhancing drugs. The most recent Olympic committee for the Games in Vancouver was partnered with the World Anti-Doping Agency, the Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport, L’Institut national de la recherche scientifique — Institut Armand-Frappier, the United States Anti-Doping Agency, and LifeLabs to collect and test approximately 2450 blood and urine samples (“Anti-Doping Initiatives”). Their meticulousness and commitment was most definitely justified. Olympic athletes implicitly agree to a social contract of fair competition. Those athletes who take steroids have an unfair advantage over those who do not, and therefore these athletes are breaking this social contract.
Let us take a moment to understand we are all human beings capable of making mistakes, so the answer to the first question should athletes who are caught using PEDs be allowed to return to sports? Absolutely! Maybe not the same organization, team, etc. but to permanently ban someone from a specific sport is hasty. However, there are exclusions for every rule and if he/she becomes a threat to the league as a whole or a repeat offender, then that is when it should be put up for consideration. I do feel it is each respective league’s obligation to provide every possible plan / program to aid their athlete. For example, WWE (Wolrd Wrestling Entertainment) has a strict wellness policy with a three strike rule. Upon the first strike suspension occurs, but they also provide rehabilitation program for their entertainers. Third strike the employee is terminated, but then again the company still makes sure the ex-employee is provided with further rehabilitation efforts for free. Professional sports are a job, so it should be treated as such. Every employee is subjected to his/her employer’s rules. If an employee at McDonald’s takes Adderall (because it makes him more efficient at the drive through window) and pops on his drug screen, he may not be able to work at McDonalds, but he is not banned from the fast food industry all together – he could work at Wendy’s, Sonic, etc. Maybe a stretch of an example – I am basically saying – people make mistakes, especially when pressure is put
Life is all about making decisions, and the ones an individual makes has an impact on him or her for the rest of their life. Drug testing high schools athletes could benefit them and their community in many ways. It will keep the kids healthier and make them pick a priority and help them mature. Drug testing is a great way to insure that the kids stay safe and out of trouble.High school athletes need to set up a good future for themselves, without drugs hindering them from their goals.
Slowly pushing students to become addicts, drug testing high school student athletes may or may not be to blame. In Facts & Statistics on Random Drug Testing of High School Students, Dr. M.H. Davis stated, “In the early 1990s, many school districts began to look into drug testing as a way to curb student drug use, which led to two U.S. Supreme Court cases involving student privacy. The court upheld the constitutionality of drug testing student athletes in 1995, and in 2002, the court expanded high school drug testing policies to include all students who participate in a competitive extracurricular activity. In those rulings, the court stated deterring student drug use was more important than privacy” (Davis). Drug testing high school athletes
Professional and college athletes are required to take a drug test at random periods during their season in order to determine if anyone has been using performance enhancing drugs. Recently, public high schools have been suggesting the idea that high school athletes should also be required to participate in drug tests regularly. Many of the high school athletes hearing about this are upset about the proposition, but the decision is up to the state governments.
The primary difference between athletes taking steroids and assembly line workers taking opioids is that the latter could be directly endangering those around them in an immediate way. Whereas athletes do serve as role models for young people and should not be normalizing the use of steroids, their choice to dope is one that has little direct impact on other people. Therefore, the argument can be made that certain jobs and certain tasks do not warrant aggressive drug policies to curtail the use of substances by employers.
The court case I studied was on March 19,2002 were the student Earls took the board of education to the supreme court because she thought drug testing students was violating the fourth amendment. She also took them to the supreme court because she said that they weren't giving evidence for drug testing students in competitive sports.
Drugs should be banned in all sports. They have been a problem for a long time. Athletes use them to enhance their body and for simply just the edge. There is nothing wrong with using some drugs to enhance your body as long as they are legal. The problems that come with drugs in sports are how to detect them. Some professional sports, such as the NHL, do not even use drug tests. The only sports that test for everything are the NBA and NFL. The Major League Baseball only tests for illegal drugs such as marijuana and cocaine. They do not test for steroids or any other kind of pill. The reason for this is because the player’s union will not allow these tests. They are currently voting to reconsider this idea. The other problem is that drug
