The use of PEDs is illegal in sports, I believe that it should stay that way. Many athletes have had their lives ruined from PEDs loosing the ones they love or dying themselves, and there are many horrible side effects that include, mental problems, and even death. Also, when someone is taking PEDs and another isn’t in say football then the person who isn’t could get very hurt, in short PEDs should just be dropped out of professional sports. If PEDs stay in professional sports (illegally) then many more people will die. Weather it is from another person or yourself. Having PEDs in professional sports give the athlete side effects that are hard to live with, doesn’t even guarantee that the drugs will work-the risks are high and the chances of it being good are low- they set a bad example for kids and teens around the world who look up to the pro athletes who take PEDs, lastly it will hurt the other athlete or yourself.

The Olympics now have various organizations and committees delegated to testing for and eliminating the use of performance enhancing drugs. The most recent Olympic committee for the Games in Vancouver was partnered with the World Anti-Doping Agency, the Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport, L’Institut national de la recherche scientifique — Institut Armand-Frappier, the United States Anti-Doping Agency, and LifeLabs to collect and test approximately 2450 blood and urine samples (“Anti-Doping Initiatives”). Their meticulousness and commitment was most definitely justified. Olympic athletes implicitly agree to a social contract of fair competition. Those athletes who take steroids have an unfair advantage over those who do not, and therefore these athletes are breaking this social contract.

Athletes that use steroids are at a high risk of getting caught and suspended. Use of steroids in many sports are illegal but athletes do not always get caught. Congress should pass a law that all professional sports should be testing athletes for Performance Enhancing Drugs.

Performance enhancing drugs should not be accepted in professional sports. Performance enhancing drugs also known as PED’s, violate rules, give players an unfair advantage, and send a terrible message to young athletes. There are many types of PED’s but the main two are Lean Mass Builders and Stimulants. Lean mass builders, which increase the growth of muscle and lean body mass, are popular for athletes who play contact sports. Stimulants can increase athletic performance by increasing focus, energy, metabolic rate, and aggression.

Nobody would argue that the quality of sports is basically dependent upon the level of skill of its players. As the skills of the players improve, so too does the quality of the game. So why are substances that would further athletes’ skills beyond human levels so ostracized? Doping is the practice of using steroids and other illegal substances to boost performance in sports and athletics. The debate of the morality of such substances has been going on for decades and continues to affect the world of sports in many ways. At the moment, steroids and all other performance-enhancing drugs are banned in their entirety from nearly all sports in most countries of the world. Scandalous lawsuits involving athletes abusing substances are constantly popping up, usually involving players and athletes that were considered fan-favorites or even heroes. Performance-enhancing drugs should be allowed in sports because it would make it easier to control them, allow athletes to perform better, and widespread use of steroids would allow more solid research and advancements in the pharmaceutical field.

“Professional athletes get paid on average from $16000- $500 million (Schwartz).” Many professional athletes go to extra activities outside of practice or games because of how much money they produce. Professional athletes shouldn’t have to take a drug test because it improves skills, there will be more fans in the stadiums, and fairness will be balanced because they couldn’t find a way to cheat. Stopping drug tests will bring in more money for each sport, and this would generate the player's safety better. The organizations can afford better equipment which will generate fewer injuries. If athletes get better equipment, it will make injuries go down tremendously. Hopefully, they stop drug tests in professional sports.

Many people know that these drugs are extremely dangerous, and in some instances deadly. Some people ask “why do doctors prescribe steroids?”, most times it is to help with pain, and sometimes it can reduce the cause of swelling. But most athletes realize the steroid makes them stronger, and use it more and more often. Most people don't realize the health effects on taking PED. By taking performance enhancing drugs it's not considered an unfair advantage is what experts have proven. PED are banned by the International Olympic Committee, the National Football League and other sports bodies. Due to economic circumstances or even luck, some athletes have better nutrition, 'natural' supplements, coaches, trainers, nutritionists, information, and equipment than others do. Some athletes have more free time to train than others do. A lot of people agree that some athletes are naturally smarter, faster, and stronger than others are. All athletes, whether or not they use PED, are not “playing on a level playing field” and that is considered fair. PED’s were used in a multitude of sports that did not even make the news. Today many athletes have come have come out about their personal use of Performance-Enhancing drugs, while others want to hide the fact that they went to illegal extremes to become a better athlete.
