Children tried as adults ACT Prompt
Background information
Throughout the history of the United States more and more teenagers and children have been put in situations where they have been tried as adults. All of these teenagers and children made a mistake which may have been because of their lack of knowledge or their curiosity as a child.
Question
Should children be given their sentence based on their age or should they be treated the same as adults since they commented the same crime?
Perspective 1
Children should be charged with the same sentence as adults, even though they are young they still commented a serious crime to point where they must be punished for it in a proper way,not in a lesser punish due to age.
Perspective 2
Children
“Hey, they’re only kids. That is until they foul up, until they commit crimes, and the bigger the crime the more eager we are to call them adults.”Marjie Lundstrom since they are kids they can't smoke or drink, or go into rated R movies without our consent. So the question has been going around whether or not they should be tried as adults and spend life in prison without parole. I most strongly agree that they should sentence juveniles to life in prison without parole.
This is why the laws about crime, rape and many more are important. In some states there are certain laws on certain problems. Automatic transfers happen in some states when the juveniles are charged as adults. Also, depending on the extent of the of the crime, whether it's drugs, murder, rape or anything else depends on how many years spent in prison or jail. The laws have to be followed but, more kids the age of 13 and up should be tried as adults also. If the child or juvenile is put on parole, or is caught doing something bad again after rehab they can also be charged as an adult. However, if the the criminal is with another person at the time of the murder, rape and many more and is older the older person will be charged as an adult, and the younger doesn’t have the biggest chance to be tried as an adult. I think that they should be tried either way as an adult whether they are 13 or
They may have committed a crime and they should be punished but not as an adult being sentenced to life in prison without parole. Kids’ brains are not fully developed. There is an article by Paul Thompson, “Startling Finds on Teenage Brains” that says there is “massive loss of brain tissue that occurs in the teenage years,” and “... brain cells and connections are only being lost in the areas controlling impulses, risk-taking, and self control.” With that being said, kids’ brains are not the same as adults. Adults’ brain have developed way more than a kid’s brain.
Kids should be tried as adults because by the time they’re 12 they know that murder is wrong. A 15-year-old stabbed to death a minimart clerk (Lundstrom). He claimed he was just copying a show he saw on t.v (Lundstrom). This shows that kids know when they did something wrong and they try to blame it on things that don’t really make sense. There was another case involving two 16-year-old girls who killed a 15-year-old girl (Sutton). They
As adolescents, we have all made mistakes, some big some small but it never crossed our minds that one of these mistakes could change our lives forever. In this day in age, it's ludicrous to hear youth suspects receive harsh sentencing; being forced to go to an adult jail or prison, or in rare cases getting put on death row. “The practice of charging young people as adults gained momentum in America in the 1990s, as youth crime spiked” ("Children in Adult Jails"). Some argue that these pre-teens and/or teens should receive harsh sentencing regardless of their age because they were old enough to know right from wrong. Others believe juveniles should be tried as adults in certain circumstances, depending on the crime and its severity. On the other hand, many people believe youth offenders should receive a higher juvenile sentence as opposed to an adult sentence. This
Every juvenile who commits a severe crime should be tried as an adult. Juveniles should understand the differences in between both good and bad. Most kids that are 15 and older are the ones committing the worse crimes, by that age they should understand the differences in between both good and bad. Every person in the world should be able to think before they do, being able to think before you do will help you understand what you're doing and help you understand the difference in between both the good and the bad. The parents of the juveniles should also understand that some crimes are severe and have severe punishments. Juveniles need to know that
are crimes of maturity so I'd say treat them as adults. As a matter of fact, juveniles should be prosecuted as adults because their crimes create emotional trauma for victims' families, also their future shouldn’t be taken into consideration if they took someone else's future, and their crimes should not go unnoticed just because of their age they are well aware of what they are doing. Plus there crime's severity is very serious and should have second thoughts of their consequences.
Many juveniles have personal problems but that does not mean they have to commit a wicked crime to feel better, they need to seek professional help. As well as adults, juveniles need to be punished the same way because if they are not punished the same, they may not actually regret the crime they committed.Seeking professional help may help theses juveniles suppress these feelings they are feeling and eventually help them in the long run.It is fair to sentence teens the same as adults for the same crime; If juveniles have the capability of committing a crime then they should be sentenced the same as an adult.
What we can do is try anyone over 15 as an adult if the crime is serious enough. We could send them to court where they can be judged on if they should be tried as an adult or a juvenile. For those who don't commit a serious enough crime or have good reason to do so should
This is a good argument, but we can say the same thing for adults. Why should juveniles be treated any different than
In my opinion I dont think kids should deserve to be tried as adults. There just kids that made a big mistake . They should be kept till they turn into adults then release them. After the time they did in Juvenile they will learn from there mistakes and never commit it again. Also should receive the proper education for there selfs and needs to live there life
In the last part of the 18th century, children under the age of seven were regarded as being incapable of
A crime is a crime no matter the age of the criminal. Their actions should be punished. Juveniles should be convicted as adults for violent crimes because they’re responsible for their own decisions.
As more minors commit murders, courts must decide their punishments. There are two sides divided on punishments for juveniles. One side wants children to be never be tried as as adults (no matter the crime). The otherside wants to allow for courts to charge children as adults; with a reasonable excuse to (like murder). Kids who intentionally commit murder, rape, or other major offenses must be tried as an adult and be charged with life without the possibility of parole. It is only fair for the safety and peace of our citizens, to try child offenders who committed a serious crime as adults.
The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child recognizes any person under the age of 18 as a child, following this within the Criminal Justice System of England and Wales it is specified that people under the age of 18 are to be considered as juveniles, people between the ages of 14-18 are to be considered as young persons and anyone under the age of 14 is to be classed as a child. What this means to us is that within the Criminal Justice System children can be distinguished by their ages, allowing different ages to be responded to as a result. On the other hand because the age of criminal responsibility is set at 10 years of age in England and Wales, this is not allowed. Instead of taking notice of the varied phases of development children are at, children are tried in adult courts as adults, where the notion of childhood is not considered.
