Should College Students Go To College Essay

As high school slowly dwindles away, most of us are in relief that there will not be any more days of waking up and getting overloaded with knowledge and materials. Now we are left with the question, is college worth it? For some there is no need for college, and college will only drag them into debt, but statistics show people with a college degree are making more money in the long run. Casey Bond wrote an article called “Why College Isn’t Worth The Money.¨ In this article she talks about her personal experiences about going to college. She notes on the fact that for some it is not beneficial to attend college depending on one's profession. Another article titled ¨“Still Questioning Whether College Is Worth It,” by Danielle Douglas-Gabriel puts the question on the line if college is worth it. Douglas-Gabriel has a different viewpoint on college. She believes that college is the most important investment one can make.

According to Sienna Beard, “ The average salary for a college graduate is $46,000, but the average is $32,000 for those with a high school diploma” (cheatsheet.com). Both of these quotes are disagreeing with my claim. Although a college degree is one of the most fundamental assets, “it is possible to be successful without a university education”(Mydomain.com). The topic of college attendance and acceptance rates continues to be one of heated debate today. Colleges used to be a place for brilliant scholars to keep their path towards higher education, but have turned into a massive source of stress and debt for students nowadays who feel that college is essential for any form of successful career. When thinking about the future, college is usually the first option on student’s mind. It is the place to go if someone wants to have a successful life, but there is more than one way to get to a destination and that applies to life after high school to. Rotherham, who wrote “ Actually, College is Very Much Worth It” stated, “the unemployment rate was 9.2 percent for those with only some college and more than 10 percent for those with just a high school degree, but it was 5.4 percent for college graduates.”

Should we encourange students to go to college or discourage them from doing so? That is the million dollar question. However, after reading the four essays in our book I can honestly say that I have mixed opinions. While I support the fact that all students should have access for higher education, and higher education should be everyones right, I also feel that college is not for everyone.

There are many strong points on both sides of the debate. I believe it should be each individual’s decision weather they want to go to college or go straight into the work force after high school.

College is an organized group of professional people with particular aims, duties, and privileges. Many people don’t attend college because they think they’ll be just fine with a high school diploma. The truth is you will always be much more qualified with a college diploma. Nowadays, most jobs require people who are well educated and have great job skills. Therefore, the people who want a good job have to study hard and at least graduate with a high education. Furthermore, as technology advances all over the world, more and more education is required from people. Most jobs overlook people with only high school diplomas, for example if they had to choose between two people one with a college degree and one without, the person with the degree would get the job. First, people say that getting a job is the first obstacle in life. The second obstacle is getting married and third is how to take care of your child or children. In order to pass the first obstacle, which getting a good job is the most important. The result of this first obstacle can impact the second and third obstacles. This expresses how important it is to get a job. College expresses how well organized you are and also how smart and what habits you have. Also, this means that the applicant has the potential to work hard and keep the work that the applicant is suppose to do.

The essay, “Should everyone go to college” was a marvelous and well put together essay. The essay emphasized the pros and cons of going to college and also elaborated on different viewpoints about the financial break down of choosing to attend college. One point that really stuck out to me was that “by telling all young people that they should go to college no matter what, we are actually doing some of them a disservice” in other words, this can be viewed in different ways with concrete evidence to back it up. Student debt has become the second largest debt in the world. Standardized tests, and high school in general, seem to be preparing everyone for college. In reality, college is not for everyone. I am a firm believer that all high school students should not be required to attend college. College is far too expensive for some people, and it is also a lot of hard, demanding work. As a high school student, I see some of the people in my class and others every day. I know that some of them are just not college-ready, nor will they ever be. There are options outside of secondary education for these students: options that better meet their needs for the future.

College is the best way for people to be successful. A famous journalist, Dan Rater has said, “A college degree is the key to realizing the American dream, well worth the financial sacrifice because it is supposed to open the door to a world of opportunity.” Many people feel lost after they graduated high school, they don’t know what challenge is waiting for them; and they have to make the toughest decision in their lives: either go to college or go to work, those two choices will completely change people’s lives. Education can improve people’s lives, and everybody can be educated by going to college; with no doubt, going to college will be the wisest decision people ever made.
