In discussions of drug addicts, one controversial issue has been whether to send drug addicts to prison or rehab. The issue presented is the cause of why drug addicts are sentenced to jail time rather then being sent to a rehab facilitation. Due to how addicted they are to drugs, many believe that prison will help them, Drug addicts should be placed in a rehab center so that they can get the help that they need. Addiction may be a societal problem, but more than anything else it is an individual problem, that affects real people with unique personal histories. The only fair, effective, and compassionate way to deal with this ongoing epidemic it to give every addict a real chance to get better, and the best way to do this is to provide each of them with an opportunity to receive comprehensive treatment for their disease in a drug rehabilitation center staffed by experienced, highly-trained professional counselors and therapists.
It is often said that rehab centers help drug addicts get clean, many people assume that it is better to lock drug addicts up. While they rarely admit as much society often takes for granted that success rates for drug addicts, who attend rehabs are much higher than the ones that go to prison. Chloe Booker, a professional counselor at a rehab center states, "Putting an ice addict in jail won 't help them, yet we 're spending billions on the prison system”.
