Jimmy Valentine is a somewhat sympathetic fellow. When he was released from prison, he was even given five extra dollars to make something of himself. After he moved to a new town, he met a girl named Annabelle and fell in love. He used to crack open safes and steal money. One day he decided to give up his pristine condition safe cracking tools. On the way him and a few other guests stopped at the bank Annabelle’s father owned. One of the children he was with got stuck in a vault and he saved her. All of this evidence proves that Jimmy Valentine should stay free. Jimmy Valentine should stay free, he deserves it because he is different, he is changed. He turned his life around after many years of crime. He is
Jimmy Valentine was trying to live a moral life because he showed honesty. On page 5, paragraph 14 it says, “Get away from the door… He set his suitcase on the table.” This shows that Jimmy was just trying to help Agatha get out of the safe and he wasn’t trying to steal any money like he used to do. Secondly, when Jimmy was writing a letter to his friend, he mentioned that Annabel, his fiance, believed in him. This shows that Jimmy was honest about wanting to marry Annabel because he truly loved her, not just because her father owned the local bank. Lastly, after Jimmy moved, he promised to himself that he’d give away his tools to a friend, showing that he no longer wanted to be
Even while sitting in a small cell locked away from humankind, Jimmy is more of a man and human being than those who are willing to put another human being behind bars for a plant.
The first reason Jimmy Valentine should stay free is that he stopped robbing. In the letter he sent to his old friend Sullivan he decided to get rid of all of his tools and started over. He also stated in the letter that he wrote that he's living a better life and fell in love. This means that now he realizes what the real world is he will stop robbing and start new.
Jimmy Valentine should stay free even though that he didn't serve the full 4 years. he still should stay free because he saved a life and he found love too, and he is also getting married to his only love (Annabell).
The first reason Jimmy should stay free is that he stopped robbing. He also sold his tools when he saw Annabel Adams. He changed his name and he started talking to Annabel. Jimmy did not want her to find out that he was a thief. He robbed four banks then he saw a girl so he stopped.
Jimmy Valentine was dedicated to living an honest life because he made himself a big part of Annabel’s family. In the story, Jimmy says “I’m going to marry the finest girl on Earth two weeks from now.” Jimmy says he is marrying, which would likely mean he is committed to living honestly for his future wife’s sake. In the text, the narrator says that Jimmy was allowed pretty much anywhere in his Annabel’s father’s bank. This fact means that Jimmy has committed to living honestly and without stealing, which gained him the
“A Retrieving Reformation” by O. Henry, details the story of the transformation of Jimmy Valentine from a criminal to a respectable man, taking place around the early twentieth century. Jimmy Valentine was released from prison early, due to outside connections. Jimmy was meant to serve a four year sentence (which he only served ten months of) because he had robbed multiple banks. Against the warden’s advice, upon his release, Jimmy resumes his profession, and robs banks in Richmond, Logansport, and Jefferson City. A detective, Ben Price, was assigned the case of the bank robberies, and recognized the style as that of Jimmy. Meanwhile, Jimmy was now in Elmore, Arkansas. While there, Jimmy notices a gorgeous young woman enter the bank, and in his awestruck state, he waits outside the bank and makes small talk with a boy.
Jimmy showed his responsibility by opening a shoe store in Elmore. Jimmy needed something to do work wise, so he opened a shoe store which shows that he has a lot of responsibility to take care of it. Since Jimmy showed people that he could be responsible and have his own business, people respected him. “Jimmy stuffed it into his vest-pocket, threw off his coat and pulled up his shirt-sleeves. With that act Ralph D. Spencer passed away and Jimmy Valentine took his place” (Henry). It was Jimmy's responsibility to open the safe to save Agatha. Jimmy had to try his best to open the safe because he was the only one there that knew how to open it. Another reason Jimmy showed his responsibility was by planning to move west with Annabel and keep her safe. Jimmy knew it was his responsibility to protect Annabel, and that mindset helped him live a moral life. Jimmy Valentine was an exceptionally responsible person after he moved to Elmore to live and lead a moral
Both of them drug-mules for the Cartel he'd helped Serve and Protect, they'd been part of the deal. Break them out, and then they were on their own. However, Jimmy, by virtue of his greater propensity for unrestrained violence had been the leader of the pack in Arcadia. And so he remained.
Johnny was not expecting anyone. He opened the door and there stood Tommy in the doorway. Johnny invited him in but Tommy just stood there silent for about a minute. With tears in Tommy’s eyes he told Johnny that this is all his fault and Jimmy would still be alive if he didn’t come up with the idea to go to Chicago for the weekend. Johnny tried to speak but no words would come out of his mouth. Tommy looked at him deep in the eyes and said “ Don’t ever let me see your face or talk to me ever again, we are done being friends”. Tommy left and Johnny felt so guilty for the death of Jimmy and wanted to be a better person. He promised himself that he would do whatever he can to help people from now on in his life and make a positive
First of all, not once did Jimmy steal a dime while he was in Elmore. Jimmy didn’t steal even after he was highly respected by the townspeople. After you have respected someone, you eventually do start to trust them. When you trust someone, it can leave you vulnerable so that person to strike any attack, yet Valentine never did steal from any person in town or betray anyone’s trust in the short story. Jimmy was suspected of stealing only one time before going to Elmore. The text has never actually stated if Jim had stolen from the one bank before going to Elmore, he was suspected of doing it by a detective who seems
I agree that this man should not be free. How can we let this man walk free after only 4 days in jail when people are locked up for life for non-violent drug offenses? This man murdered a woman, evidence pointed to his guilt, he confessed, and was convicted. As far as we know, he hasn't committed any other murders since, and that may have been a factor in his reduced sentence. Despite this, he ended a woman's life and although he did confess, he did so only when confronted with incontrovertible evidence over 30 years later. It follows that he should serve a just punishment for the crime he
Jimmy made a living from robbing banks and people all over the country wanted to capture him. Whenever he was placed in jail, he would always get bailed out shortly afterwards. Ben Price, a detective who had been trying to catch Jimmy for years, tracked him down to Elmore. “‘Going to marry the banker’s
