In the United States “according to national estimates calculated with data released by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in September 2016, law enforcement [has] made more than 50,000 violent crime arrests involving youth under age 18 in 2015, compared with 100,000 ten years earlier” (Butts, Search and Evaluation). Although the rate is decreasing on a positive note, it still does not justify the amount of juveniles we have in America. Juvenile justice is the field where criminal law is suitable to teenagers not old enough to be held responsible for crimes. I think juveniles who are committing accidental crimes should not be held for a lifetime sentence, but should still take responsibility and time for their actions. Last year in December a fourteen year old …show more content…
At 1:30 in the morning on Saturday, Gabrion Walker, 17, died an hour after being shot. The suspect, Kaleb Oliver Greene, was recklessly playing with a gun on a road when it went off with no intention and killed his friend. With fear and astonishment, he fled the scene into the woods and was found several hours later by a police dog team. Witnesses said at the scene Kaleb was carelessly playing with the gun as if it was no big deal. Little did he know it would soon go off and kill one of his friends. Kaleb was arrested and charged with involuntary manslaughter, pointing a gun at another and reckless conduct. Due to the state law in Georgia, an involuntary manslaughter is a ten year sentence. I believe that since the suspect was recklessly playing with the gun and had no care in the world while playing with it, his sentence is reasonable. I wish I could say I understand his reason to run since he had no idea it would happen, but he should of stayed and took full responsibility due to his irresponsible actions at the age of eighteen. Kaleb is very lucky that he was not tried as an adult and sent to a federal
The topic of juveniles justice and whether or not to charge teen criminals in adult courts and sentence them to audit prisons is one issue that is always up for debate. Media plays a huge role on juvenile crimes they show the worst about it and not any positive which makes many people feel that there's a huge problem going on with the juvenile justice. Minors should not be charged as adults or be sentenced to adult prisons without knowing the background or the circumstances. Not every kid that commits a crime will grow up to be a criminal, brain studies show that teens are unable to make decisions efficiently which causes them to make the wrong decision, children from juvenile court to adult court actually increases crime, kids take risks in adult prisons and bring justice for extreme crimes.
Should juveniles be tried as adults? In my opinion I think they should because when you turn a certain age, you gain certain privileges. “You achieve certain rewards such as voting rights, the ability to purchase a house, the ability to purchase tobacco products at the local gas station, but most importantly the ability to be held responsible for your actions. When you turn 18 a whole other world opens for you, and that’s because an 18-year-old is considered an adult in nearly every state, which is a big deal for most teens. What most 18-year olds are not so happy about is the fact that they are no longer being tried for crimes in juvenile courts or treated as irresponsibly as when they were 17, 16, or 15. But even those young ages before
As adolescents, we have all made mistakes, some big some small but it never crossed our minds that one of these mistakes could change our lives forever. In this day in age, it's ludicrous to hear youth suspects receive harsh sentencing; being forced to go to an adult jail or prison, or in rare cases getting put on death row. “The practice of charging young people as adults gained momentum in America in the 1990s, as youth crime spiked” ("Children in Adult Jails"). Some argue that these pre-teens and/or teens should receive harsh sentencing regardless of their age because they were old enough to know right from wrong. Others believe juveniles should be tried as adults in certain circumstances, depending on the crime and its severity. On the other hand, many people believe youth offenders should receive a higher juvenile sentence as opposed to an adult sentence. This
Have you ever thought about how severe juvenile crimes are and how they should be tried? Some juveniles commit crimes that are so bad that they could be tried as an adult. But, should they be tried as an adult depending on how bad the crime is?
The main reason for this is to learn more and have a better understanding of how Juvenile Courts work and about there Juvenile Court Sentencing Options. Kent Scheidegger, legal director, of the criminal justice legal foundation, states that “Most teenagers, know enough to be tried in adult court,” "Minors aren’t fully capable of understanding what is going on, I find not credible in the case of intellectually normal teenagers." he said. Research on the youths brain development shows that teens have a different understanding and common sense from adults. There are discussions among the juvenile courts whether
Into days society there is a lot of debate and discussion on whether or not Juveniles should be sentenced to life in prison. Take in consideration that were talking about kids as young as like 6 years old. People talk about whether it’s right or not in other country’s they even banned the death penalty. Different people believe in different things. For example a group of people believe that juveniles should be sentenced to life in jail if they commit a heinous crime. Then there are people that believe that the juveniles should not be sentenced to life in prison. I personally belief that Juveniles or young adults should be sentenced to life in prison if they did commit a heinous crime.
“I Believe In Justice, and I Believe In People Being Held Responsible For Their Actions”-Bruce Willis. The quote means no matter what their age is they are responsible for their crimes big or small. With that being said juveniles should be convicted as adults for violent crimes because many understand what they are doing even though they are “just kids”. Also because there's no such things as adult crimes just adult criminals. Some violent crimes are assault, murder, sexual assault, etc. Many juveniles have committed these crimes.
Over the past several decades more adolescences are being arrested and prosecuted. Not only are more children being put the juvenile justice system younger and younger children are being tried as adults. In more recent years thousand of adolescences are being placed in adult court systems and sentencing them to longer and harsher punishments. Although crime has gone down significantly in America the number of juvenile offenders has increased greatly. Many people in our society today believe that children who commit violent crimes should be tried in the adult court system even though they are under the age of eighteen. Although these children committed crimes such as an adult, this does not mean they are adults and should be sentenced as one.
A crime is a crime no matter the age of the criminal. Their actions should be punished. Juveniles should be convicted as adults for violent crimes because they’re responsible for their own decisions.
Imagine sitting in a courtroom, hoping the the judge will not give a harsh sentence. Unfortunately, that’s the case for many juveniles, some as young as 13! A juvenile is subject to a more severe sentence with the limited sentencing available. It is estimated that 250,000 youth are prosecuted as adults, each year. This number should change, as juveniles are not adults, both mentally and physically. Juveniles need an environment surrounded with guiding adults, education and the resources to help them. A juvenile is not an adult, and should not be tried as one.
Regardless of age, a killer is a killer. A killer can be the daily customer you have at your job or the child you’re babysitting. “The Supreme Court justices would be wise as well as compassionate to strike a balance: Make juvenile offenders responsible for their actions but don't completely rob them of hope. And this should apply not only to the inmates who were 14 at the time of their crimes but to the remaining 2,497 who were 15 to 18 years old,” (Ellison 19). Kids make mistakes all the time, that doesn’t mean we should take their life away from them. With overlooking the listed factors in court when sentencing a juvenile, this will improve the number of children in prisons. Not all of these children partake in the act because of evil, but merely because of
As a teen, staying out of trouble is a very complicated task. Whether it’s trouble with your parents or trouble with the law. Especially, if you grew up around convicted felonies or even lived in poverty, which would put you in the mindset of going out and doing crimes for a little extra money in your pockets. In my opinion, teens that are under the age of 18 should not be considered adults, until they start paying their own bills and being able to work so that they can provide for their family. Children are not established the same rights and the military. Teen do not have the
I think that the criminal justice system should have different penalties and treatments for juveniles as opposed to adults. I think that responding to juvenile offending is a unique policy and practice challenge. According to most statistics, a substantial proportion of crime is perpetrated by juveniles. However, I think, for the most time, many juveniles will ‘grow out’ of offending and become law-abiding citizens as they mature. In other words, I think communities understand, or should understand, that the younger a person is, the more likely it is that they can change. Most importantly, we should realize that juveniles do not have the level of maturity, thought process, decision-making, experience, or wisdom as presumably adults should
In all honestly, people shouldn’t use juvenile's age as a shield. Yes, certain sentences are crucial and they should not have to spend their whole life in a prison that will make them go crazy, but they should get consequences for their actions. For instance, if you tell someone that if they don’t do the homework that is assigned to them nothing will happen, they will continue to not do the homework because there’s no consequence. As soon as a consequence is attached to it they will either deal with it or do the homework. Therefore, if you keep mentioning their crimes for “mistakes” they will keep doing it because they know they will get away with it.
Do you think think that Juvenile Offenders should go to prison for their extreme crimes. In 2015, law enforcement agencies in the U.S. made an estimated 921,600 arrests of teens under age 18, 56% less than the number of arrests in 2006.(ojjdp) Juvenile Offenders should get the same sentence as adults because teens who go to prison bring justice for extreme crimes, Teens are responsible for their actions and should take responsibility, Juveniles who commit serious and violent crimes should be in prison.
