To raise or not to raise? That is the ever pressing question regarding Minimum wage. Not many subjects can ignite a controversy as quickly as that of whether or not minimum wage should be raised, or by how much should it be raised or if it should remain the same. What is minimum wage? By definition, minimum wage is the minimum hourly wage an employer can pay an employee for work. (“MinimumWage.com”) America’s minimum wage was first introduced by President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1938. That minimum wage was introduced as part of the Fair Labor Standards Act also abbreviated as FLSA. ("History of the United States Minimum Wage."). That demand allowed employers to continue to take advantage of their workers. This massive demand for jobs caused wages to drop even further to an all-time low. Poverty was an enormous national issue. As a main focus for re-election, President Franklin D. If the saying that the rich get richer and the poor get poorer is correct, why do workers bother trying to get a higher minimum wage? When questioning whether or not a minimum wage is important, an answer on reference.com sums up both sides. “The minimum wage is important because it raises wages and reduces poverty. Proponents assert that it is needed to protect workers from exploitative employment practices. Opponents of the minimum wage claim that it is an unnecessary government intrusion into the relationship between employer and employee.” (“Why Is Minimum Wage Important?”) Currently, there are no official decisions on an increased federal minimum wage in 2017.
