Should Photo Identification Laws Be Required To Vote

The debate on whether photo identification should be required to vote has become very visible and heated over the past several years. Some argue that voter identification laws are only to keep certain people from being able to participate in an election. They claim that it is meant to dissuade minorities or certain socioeconomic groups from voting. When you consider all activities that occur in our everyday lives that require photo identification, there is no valid reason to not verify someone’s identity before allowing them to cast a ballot in an election. First, let’s look at a sampling of events that many people perform on a daily basis that do require a photo ID. Many state or federal licenses such as marriage, driving, hunting, and fishing need proper identification to be obtained. If you are planning to rent or purchase a home or vehicle, you must have a photo ID. During travel, identification must be presented to board an airplane or rent a hotel room. Many purchases such as: firearms, alcohol, tobacco, and even certain cold medications require identification. Applications for many government programs like food stamps, welfare, Medicaid, and Social Security must be accompanied with a photo …show more content…

In order to cast a ballot in a United States election you must be a United States citizen. You must also be of a certain age that can vary by state. Since our country put a certain criteria in place on what is considered an eligible voter, why would we not want to ensure this is being adhered to? I can think of no legitimate reason. Citizens of this country should be the ones who are allowed to elect officials that will lead and direct our Nation for a said term. Elections are a very important process and election results should have the utmost legitimacy.
