Educational wise, America is ranked number fourteen out of forty countries. Technology, phones, and even cars are evolving. However, our educational system is staying the same. Our schooling system is not preparing student for the future. This has to come to a stop. In order to to move our educational system into the future, we must step away from the archaic educational systems and find more modern ways to get students to be successful. Instead of forcing students to compete with one another and learn a certain way, our schooling system should adapt a better learning environment. In order to prepare students for today's future, we must abandon all standardized testing. In the video, “I just sued the school system” it stated how the creator of standardized testing are “too crude to be used”. Students should not be judged based off of these results. Some standardized test can be used to determine whether or not you get into a certain college or what classes you should take. I don't this is completely fair. Some people are not good at taking standardized test. This can cause them to be put in wrong classes or take away their chance to be successful. A piece of paper should not be able to determine one’s intelligence. Getting rid of standardized testing will stop students from being judged based off test results.
Besides abandoning standardized testing, there are other things we can do to improve our educational system. Another thing we can do is teach students in a more modern way. Technology is changing everyday. I think using textbooks is outdated. There is new information that should be taught instead of the the same thing from over 10 years ago. This old information will not prepare students for the future. We should be using computers and more technology to learn. Using textbooks can be boring and cause students to not pay attention. There are 99,000 schools in the U.S., and they are all different in their own way (nsta.org). This can lead to some students getting a better education than others, because of a number of different reasons, like lack of teachers, funding, or the size of the classes. In order to improve as a country there needs to be a more uniform system that challenges students. It will take time to develop the system and implement it in schools, but I feel it will be very helpful in fixing the national education and in improving test
We shouldn’t have to take standardized tests because they don’t provide any feedback on how to perform better. The tests treat everyone who takes them feel identical, they don’t make you feel different. These tests make create a huge amount of stress on teachers and students. Although standardized testing has been a major part of schooling it has also had a negative impact on effective education. Standardized testing is not an effective way to test the skills and abilities of today’s students. Standardized tests do not reveal what a student actually understands and learns, but instead only prove how well a student can do on a generic test. Schools have an obligation to prepare students for life, and with the power standardized tests have today, students are being cheated out of a proper, valuable education and forced to prepare and improve their test skills. Too much time, energy, and pressure to succeed are being devoted to standardized tests. Standardized testing, as it is being used presently, is a flawed way of testing the skills of today’s students.
Over the last two decades America’s educational system has been descending on the national ranking chart. According to Rankingamerica.com, countries like South Korea and Japan are leading the charts in education while the U.S is rank number fourteen. There are many attributes that play a part of this destruction, but the overuse of the unforgiving arrangement of standardized testing has a strong presence. Though, standardized testing has been around since the 1800’s but the tests that are implemented today are no match for educators or students.
The purposes of standardized tests are to instruct decision making, establish program eligibility, evaluate course goals, evaluate program goals, and examine external curriculum. When a teacher gives and assesses a standardized test, they gain information about their students that helps them realize what concepts they have learned according to the agenda for the subject at hand. If the assessment is performed in a sensible amount of time and given according to the directions, this purpose should be fulfilled; however, it is a common belief that standardized tests do not work well in establishing where a student stands in a specific curriculum. Many people in the United States are concerned with the role that standardized testing has on education. Most of them have very strong views on this subject and as it usually happens with large-scale issues these views are very diverse and often opposite. Some claim that standardized testing is the best way to determine student’s skills and qualities because they are equally designed for everyone and not biased. Others, on the other hand, argue the fairness of these tests. They believe that test scores do not represent student’s knowledge. What is certain, in my opinion, is that this subject needs more attention followed by actions that will actually make difference in the education system.
Standardized test cause reduced content knowledge. In other words, teach the test criteria and nothing more. The scores that everyone is trying to get only give a person a small amount of the knowledge that, without the test, they would obtain. Theses scores are drilled so hard into a student’s head that they do not know any other thing to do than to pass that test. Barber states in his article that there were three groups of people, elected officials from the school board, the press, and the public. He said that “All three groups were clamoring for something simple and repeatable to use to judge how well their schools were doing.” He goes on to say that they thought standardized testing was just that. They wanted to compare other schools to their school, that it gives them those bragging rights. This will eventually create a ripple effect, and come back on the schools in harmful ways.
College admissions are crucial a student’s senior year of high school. There are many requirements that need to be satisfied in order to qualify for admissions at certain schools, as well as the checklist to apply to each school. Hopefully, as a junior the student prepared by taking the SAT/ACT, and visiting at least a handful of potential colleges. By the start of senior year, the student must complete a separate application for each college which is quite tedious, then submit high school transcripts, shot records, admission essay(s), and SAT/ACT scores. What they learn in school will impact them immensely; it is the responsibility of a teacher to give students the best education in order to ensure the common good of the future. It is essential for students to not only learn content matter, but also the skills to enable them to participate in a democracy. What’s your ACT score? Students are branded with their ACT and SAT scores in society. Today’s education is heavily leaning on standardized tests. An average students takes over one hundred standardized tests in his or her school years. Standardized tests are used to measure and test the knowledge of students in a particular subject in a quick and easy way. These tests are also used to see the extend and skill of students for qualifications of certain colleges and scholarships. Some of these standardized tests include the ACT and the SAT. But do these test fully measure the strength of knowledge these students have practiced for their whole lives? Standardized testing does not allow students to fully and completely show their strength in education and instead results in breaking down students mentally and physically.
Every year, hundreds of thousands of students across the nation are required to take many standardized tests. Which are used to determine student’s achievement, progress and growth. These tests supposedly say the outcome of how much knowledge a student has or has not learned. The stakes are high all because of a test score. Standardized tests may determine a pass or fail status for grade levels through K-12 or admission into colleges if you are taking an ACT or SAT standardized test. It is unfair and a very unreliable method to use to measure the performance of students.
