There are 37 minutes every school day when every single student has the same class. This class is STaR, Student Teachers and Relations is a class in which students are suppose to build relationships with their teachers and fellow students. Alas this class has become a study hall for the majority of students. STaR can be removed, and the Center Grove High School will still exceed the requirements of the minimum time allowed per school day. Without STaR, the day would be shorter, which is beneficial for students. More time at home would provide more time for physical activity, which is beneficial for the students. Being at home more would allow more family time for students, which is beneficial. Without STaR, students could have more time to …show more content…
According to IC 20-30-2-2(a) public schools must provide a minimum of six hours of education. This does not include lunch or recess. Currently students attend Center Grove High School from 7:35 to 14:50 (not including Wednesday) on normal weekdays, which is a total of seven hours and 15 minutes. Once lunch is subtracted from the day, there is a total six hours and 42 minutes of educational time. STaR is 37 minutes long, so once we subtract that from the day there is six hours and five minutes left in the day, so without STaR we would still exceed the state minimum. Thus STaR is not necessary for the school days to meet the state minimum of hours, so it could legally be removed from the school …show more content…
Sleep is a critical component to memory, metabolism, immune function, learning, etc. After a good nights sleep, humans take in information better Also, after learning new information, a good sleep can help humans process and cement the knowledge in their brains. Getting a good sleep can also help protect physical health, mental health, and your life quality. In teens sleep also supports growth and development. Sleep does not just improve that persons life, but it also improves the person's ability to work, learn, react, get along with others, and think, which would also allow people to be safer in how they act, which would be beneficial for everyone around them. Sleep also improves physical health. For example, a study done on teenagers showed that for every hour of lost sleep, that persons odds of becoming obese would rise. Not only does loss of sleep increase the odds of obesity, it also increases the risk of kidney disease, heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and high blood pressure. Also, sleep deficiency can greatly affect student drivers. Statistics show that around 100,000 car accidents occur every year because of sleepy drivers, resulting in around 1,500 deaths. Studies have also shown that being sleepy while driving affects your ability to drive more than
Have you ever had those thoughts where they were too scary, but they were very possible? The reasons why we should not have 90 more minutes in our day is because people have plans, it can be expensive, and because it won’t fix our problems. We shouldn't have school for a longer period because other people may have plans afterwards. Some people may have a doctor's appointment right after their last class. Some may have a sport to practice for that can't be too late in the day. Some may even have to leave early for whatever reason, and they could be missing an extra class they have to attend.
The school board of the district should not make the school day longer by adding an extra hour. Kid’s will get tired, not being able to focus and stay off task. Kid’s also need time for basic necessities, like eating dinner, sleeping a full eight hours, being social, and even for some kids, working at jobs.
Introduction:I disagree with adding another hour of school because the students don't need to be at school all day. They need to be at home so they can rest,do other things.
Well that would require us to add 1 hour and 45 minutes to each day. This would have us going to 5:00 p.m. each day. Some students get to school at 6:20 for athletics. If they had to stay until five, they will have been at school for 10 hours and 40 minutes which will easily over stress and work these students. Even those who don’t have athletics have to be at the school by 8:00 a.m. and would have to stay till 5:00 p.m. The classic american work hours are 9-5. That composes a 8 hour shift which is what most people work. This means that students will be here for 1 hour more than the number of hours most adults work.
Students have afterschool activities, such as soccer, basketball, bowling, dance, etc. Some of those activities start right when school ends and that’s convenient for the student. The student can just go straight to their activity from school with no problem, but if the school board extends the school day there is going to be a problem. The student will either have to miss part of the school day just so they can get to their activity or they’ll just have to not do the activity at all, and that’ll upset the student. That is why we should either keep the school day the same or shorten the school day. Yes, the student may get to their activity at a later time, but what if that is the latest time they could get it to? What if that activities time is the best for that specific student?
At the end of the day, students want to go home and have time to relax or spend with friends. If there is an extra hour of school, their schedules will be filled up more. Assuming that this extra hour lasts from 3:19-4:04, added with the average bus ride of 20 minutes with, say, 6 minutes to get to the bus, then the students get home around 4:30. Trying to get homework done, dinner eaten, and having fun, and getting to bed at a good hour on weekdays will be next to impossible to do without ruining grades. Granting that students may stay up extra late to do all the things they want to do, the problem of tiredness during the day comes up. Doing this for a whole school year can really take a toll on a person’s mental and physical health.
Did you know that the school board wants to add an extra hour and a half to our school day? Its completely insane! It makes you think about something, how will this affect our lives if they actually add an hour and a half? Well three reasons they should not add more time are After School activities, our schedules, and all the student’s reactions.
Very rarely do you see an adult advocate for less time spent in school. Ask any student, and one would receive a similarly unilateral answer, though supporting a different opinion. I advocate for this not out of laziness, but out of concern for the average teen. There are many problems with this proposal at first glance: how would one teach the curriculum in less time? How would one rearrange the school system to accommodate this radical proposal? I do not know the answers to these questions; I do not pretend to be an expert on education reform. I merely speak from the perspective of a student. What I can tell you is that sometime in the future, when I look back upon my youth, I will not remember the countless hours spent in the classroom, but instead the times I spent being a child, enjoying my
If the students have an afterschool job the extra hour of school will interfere. They will be getting
From the time we get to school to the time we leave school is a very long day. During the middle of school, some students and staff get tired. Trying to cram an extra hour in, is way to much. It’s already bad enough that school goes from 7:15 to 2:19. Most of those hours, we’re just learning or reviewing. Adding extra time to these long and stressful days makes no sense to me.
My first argument against the plan is that we already have so much going on at school, it doesn’t make sense at all to add more time! Classes are usually one and a half hours long. Imagine if they added another hour and a half long class in addition. What class would it be? Instead would they add more time to each class?
Would it be good to have longer school days? The school board is thinking about adding 1 hour and 30 minutes to school days. I think it is a very bad choice by the school board to add more time to school.
I highly disagree with this situation about the school adding half of an hour. I will explain why it’s a bad decision. It is not a smart idea just to keep children in the school for an hour because
With schools having hours added to schools. I personally think schools shouldn’t have to have
Did you know that in some states, school lasts from dusk till dawn? People have different points of view on the length of the school day in America. Some people think that the school day should be longer to improve academic levels for students. The United States "lags behind other countries in core subjects. In 2015, American students came in 24th in reading, 25th in science, and 41st in math out of 72 countries." (p 30). Because the U.S. is behind, many experts believe that students should have an additional 90 minutes of school. The school day should be longer for many different reasons.
