With the recent events of school shooting occurrences and student led protests, the media has been buzzing about new gun law proposals. We wanted to know “should teachers be allowed to carry guns in schools”. We figured people's response might differ based on our approach and what groups of people we surveyed. We then decided to ask a group of students and teachers, to see if they’d have different perspectives. Using the convenience method, we surveyed teachers and students whenever it was convenient for us; and because we chose this method, we were able to fit it right into our schedule without interrupting any of our classes. While Reynoldsburg High School: Livingston campus was our population, our sample was 25 teachers along with
Idaho Senator Jim Guthrie is discussing the pros and cons of allowing teachers and administrators to carry guns at school. A school district in north-central Idaho decided that some of the teachers and administrators should be trained and carry a gun. “I think we should give districts the maximum flexibility to make those decisions”(Journal Staff & Wire Reports). The National rifle association's believe all action to help keep children's safety should be considered. “ When a threat occurs, a quick and timely response by law enforcement professionals is what everyone hopes for, but in these when time is clearly of the essence we strongly believe that trained school personnel can also serve a vital role”( Journal Staff & Wire Reports).
The article presented two different viewpoints concerning arming teachers in school districts. Nirvi Shah wrote an article in support of arming teachers and stated that educators know when an emergency situation arises before anyone else because educators are at the front line of action for the school not emergency personnel. An article opposing putting guns in the hands of teachers was published and stated that teachers would rather hold a book in their hands rather than a firearm (“Arming Teachers,” 2013).
“Should Gun Safety be Taught in Schools? Perspective of Teachers,” Asks the question if it is appropriate to teach gun safety in the classrooms of young children. It also asks who should be doing the teaching either the teacher or a professional such as a cop. Statistics show people who have guns in the home often leave them in reach of young children and increasing the risk of accidental deaths. Cecilia Obeng received her Doctorates in early childhood development & education at Indiana University in 2002 where she is currently teaching as a professor and the author of several books.
During the past few years, the number of school shootings has increased markedly. In 2013, there were 19 school shootings that occurred, taking so many innocent lives. Some may remember the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting on December 14th, 2013. It was the second deadliest massacre shooting in United States history, behind the 2007 Virginia Tech Massacre. Adam Lanza shot twenty children, six staff, his mother, and himself that day. School shootings are tragic. Violence continues to increase with these shootings, as well as with violence within the schools among the students. The big question is, how do we protect ourselves from these horrible occurrences? How do teachers protect the innocent lives of their students? One common suggestion is for the teachers and administration to be armed. The premise is that if the school staff has possession of firearms this would discourage shooters, thereby making the schools much safer. However, it is my belief that teachers should not be able to have access to weapons. There should never be any type firearm on a school property, excluding trained security personnel, such as police officers and security guards.
My recently divorced History professor seemed to be in an extremely foul mood one dreary Monday morning. Every move and comment the class made seemed to irritate him more and more. Everyone in the room stopped moving and talking in concern for him, everyone except Josh, who is our class clown. He made the decision to make a comment to our teacher that any other day would have broken the ice and class would have resumed. For some reason, on this particular day it was the straw that broke the camel’s back. My professor looked up from the floor and in a matter of seconds had removed a gun provided to him by the school for protection, from under his jacket, and then shot Josh before anyone could do anything to stop him.
Should teachers be able to carry guns in school? A question that has been asked for many years. With many recent school shootings the question is gaining even more popularity, dividing the country. However, while have teachers carry protection in school proves many benefits, having them in school could cause more harm than good. The first reason for not having teachers carry firearms is the threat they could propose if a child got their hands on it.
Is arming teachers the last way to stop violence? The number of school shootings is increasing rapidly in the United States. One of the ways people are thinking to solve this problem, is to arm teachers. Almost all of us understand that arming teachers will stop these school shooting from ever happening again. In this essay I will strongly argue that teachers should have guns, because a shooter can be disarmed, it may prevent the trigger from ever getting pulled, and any teacher to become, will have to prove that they are mentally stable to carry guns.
The president of the united states donald trump suggest that teachers should carry guns to school, I totally agree with the president trump. The trump admission doubled down this week on its support for arming teachers announcing that it wants to help states provide teachers with “ reigorons” firearms training. Trump support the idea that teachers should carry guns to school and i agree with that because me as a student i would feel more safe and comfortable to go to school. I also support the idea that teachers should carry guns to school because i want other students to feel more safe and comfortable to school.
Teachers should have the choice of whether or not to have guns. Some teachers don’t want to bare the burden of having to kill someone. Mrs. Frye from Waupun Area Junior/Senior High strongly hinted at to her students that, “[she]... doesn’t feel comfortable with guns.”. And when she was questioned about whom she would trust she said that “My husband [who also works at the school] would be able to”.
There are two main opinions on equipping teachers with firearms. The problem is not with the polarization of these views, but the lack of willingness to compromise. Polarization of two ideas creates an inability to solve the problem. The National Rifle Association’s National School Shield is an uncompromising policy requiring a teacher to carry or possess a firearm (Pérez, 2017). The other side though is
Thank you everyone for being here today for this crucial meeting to discuss this vital issue. This vital issue we are discussing affects the future of America. It affects our children that we all hold so close to our hearts. It affects all of our schools and our educators. The question of discussion is this: should our teachers in our schools be armed with guns?
Tragic school shootings have contributed to the topic of teachers carrying concealed weapons. School is suppose to be a safe place for students to learn. Recent talks have suggested that teachers act as frontline defenders. This opinion has brought about debate of whether educators should carry concealed weapons. This paper will argue against the proposition of placing teachers in the role of frontline defenders by establishing the position that students do not support the idea, teachers are not in favor of carrying concealed weapons and the potential for health issues associated with teachers carrying concealed weapons.
Events like the school shootings in Virginia Tech and Northern Illinois University have brought some fear into the Students for Gun Free Schools. Recent controversy on Concealed Carry within school grounds has some students feeling safe while others feel like they're stepping into a war zone waiting to erupt. Discomfort, increased risks, and flawed background checks- all these problems have led me to side against Concealed Carry, because without guns, we would be safer.
Reason #1 for teachers being able to carry a gun, protection of students. Imagine being a parent in this day and age where you have to worry about your child going to what was a safe environment in the parents’ age. What is now a risk for a mentally ill and damaged individual to kill as many innocent people as possible. This should not be a worry for the child or parents, but it has to be because at this point any school is a threat. So a possible factor in decreasing shootings is arming teachers, by doing these teachers can fight back instead of shielding or running from the shooter.
“The world is filled with violence. Because criminals carry guns,we decent law-abiding citizens should also have guns. Otherwise they will win and the decent people will lose.” James Earl Jones said this in an interview when he was asked about being a member of the National Rifle Association(Brianyquote.com). Every time there is a school shooting multiple questions come to mind.
