The setting is Salem, Massachusetts in the year 1692, during the witch trials that Salem is known for. Due to the history, the reader already feels a sort of tension behind every action and piece of dialogue.

The opening scene is important as it shows the sort of superstitions on witchcraft, spells, and magic. Also with the girls falling ill, it makes the people who believe in witchcraft seem like they had good evidence to back up their claims.

What is the significance of the ending/closing scene?

In the end, Proctor dies a martyr. His death shows off the Puritan belief that time on Earth is only a miniscule part of their life spent up in heaven. It is also shows Proctor's way of redeeming himself, for if he lies he will go to hell, but if he goes off to die he may pay for the crimes he had committed.
